Nope, because I packed up and went travelling for years, wanted to see what the rest of the World was like

No point spending my entire life in Ireland and going to the odd trip to Spain and sit in a hotel

    100% best thing ever

We need an ethics committee with powers to investigate and sanction those who transgress. If you transgress you lose your dail seat and forfeit any pension rights associated with your status.

"doing Trojan work" on Paddy Cosgrove vendetta. Complain about Denis O'Brien and then revere Paddy the next.....I don't think I need to say anymore

    😂

Give us all a shout when they run an article on Sinn Fein 🤑🤑

Not sure why anyone wouldn't want an impartial version of this website? why do you not want that?

But let me guess, even though he's resigned now you still don't think he's done anything wrong?

I have. You haven't answered the many questions repeatedly put to you by many posters about for example how you think he performed in the News AT One interview?

O Dear BA ,I can understand your disgust at how this has played out , it's shocking I know , particularly Leo & MM looking utterly foolish but do I and others need to remind you yet again many many ordinary folks have and continue to donate to the wonderful Ditch ,they don't hide this fact , we've been over this time and time again & focusing on one of many donaters doesn't changed the fact the Ditch have done Trojan work and not a single item they've reported on Refuted Coherently by Robert Troy.

Yep, usual response we see in Ireland. Whistleblowers and those who highlight corruption are mocked and their motives are questioned. It’s the stock response to any perceived ‘attack’ on our ‘betters’.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,242 ✭✭✭brokenangel

What disgust? I gave my opinion at the start and it hasnt changed. Hardly "disgust at how this played out" because he has done exactly what I said he should do.

As expected you don't want an impartial version of "ontheditch"

You do realise you are donating to Paddy Cosgrove who is a multi millionaire and is only upset with FG because they didn't give him millions of tax payers money 🤣

While you are at it, you might as well throw a few quid over to Denis o'Brien...he will be jealous of his mate Paddy getting all the money

That is hilarious you are actually donating to a million, yet we have thousands of people on the street homeless because of the housing crisis and have you lifted a finger to help them? I won't ask if you offered to help the refugees from Ukraine.....

Not sure why people are relying on the Vox Pop. It was done during the day time, mostly retired and elderly people at it. Ask the same questions to people in the evening on their way home from work to their overpriced rental accommodation and you'll get a different and much angrier answer.

Anyway if the election is in a couple of years he'll have a good chance of getting re elected. Unless Boxer Moran runs, or SF can get a good high profile candidate in Longford.

I think our whole political system needs root and branch reform. How does someone so apparently inept like Troy get a junior ministry. He didn’t misinterpret anything he deliberately misled with his register of interest declaration. The use of the word misinterpreted is an insult to our intelligence.

I am asking for an impartial website, how is that mocking?

He bought his first house at 20. Not very difficult back in 2002. Worked for 2 years so may have had some savings, but he had a decent track record of wage income and rental payments. Maybe a €10K top up from his parents and off he went. 80% mortgages were no problem back then, he was probably eligible for a 90% one.

If he purchased it in Mullingar then you could get a very decent 3/4 bed for around €65-80,000 IIRC.

A few questions I'd love to ask him:

How much rent was he paying back in 1999-2002?

How does this compare to the €1,550 he charges for and apartment (consisting of 2 converted bedrooms) in 2022?

Does he think this is fair, or is he just squeezing the max out of working people?

Would he have been able to purchase a house at 20 today taking prices and wages into account?

Does he think this is fair, or is he just pulling the ladder up after him?

How does he think housing will look in 20 years when his own children's generation are trying to buy homes?

I made my position on the subject clear on day one, hasn’t changed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53,028 ✭✭✭✭ButtersSuki

But you're not being asked about your position from Day One - you're being asked about your opinion on an event that happened AFTER Day One. Or do you make your mind up on something on Day One, and never change it after that point regardless of how the story unfolds and develops?

O, it's quite evident BA 😏 I've read intently all of the Ditch's excellent reporting and I might add on other matters, I've gone further, fact check as I've connections in Mullingar, I'd be the first to call out misinformation, but I've not seen any on the Ditch , have you 🤔

And you can't help yourself, a Dig at Ukrainian refugees and that crisis, Dear God BA , seriously 😳 do you ever give up deflecting

Troy shouldn't have just resigned as a Minister (and let's face it most think he was pushed rather than he made this decision of his own free will), he should have to resign his seat and from politics.

He still has lots of questions to answer IMO about his finances, particularly around the accumulation of the resources relative to his income and this claim he was using the Room To Rent scheme - which I simply don't believe.

I suspect the way has now been cleared for SIPO and other agencies to start probing deeper into a number of aspects now fully in the public Domain ,Troy has inadvertently dragged a number of agencies into this mess , not least Westmeath Co Co, I'm wondering will Darragh O Brien be requesting yet another Report so lessons can be learned 😉

some interesting bits from the Irish times profile

he is the youngest of 12 siblings

his family run a post office

he worked for AIB in a customer service role at one stage

he has a certificate in property valuation

he was the parliamentary assistant for Donie Cassidy before he became a TD

Another day another story about Troy working fervently for his constituents.

But it has now emerged that Mr Troy sought tax breaks for landlords who rent property to local authorities and used parliamentary time to repeatedly ask questions about the operation of a Housing Assistance Payment (HAP) scheme which currently pays him for five tenancies.

Separately, it emerged yesterday that Mr Troy used Dáil speaking time to call on the housing minister to support landlords seeking to evict tenants during the pandemic.

Defiant TD Robert Troy quits as minister over property interests row but insists: ‘I won’t apologise for being a landlord’ - Independent.ie

*I am not sure how partial or 'impartial' this /newspaper/website is.

I'll say no more so to speak ,wouldn't be appropriate here but mentioning it , certainly is given the claptrap this morning in the context of #TroyStory 😏

If the market was there for the impartial version of the website you refer to it would already exist.

The freedom of the press exists. Its up to those running said website to choose the stories they run. Same as applies to newspapers etc.

Nothing to stop anyone else setting up a website or publication that puts similar effort into publishing stories about politicians on the other side of the house.
