Not a drop of rain over night once again, warm and sunny outbreaks at the moment

You add nothing. Air temperature is air temperature. It is the temperature of the air that has been heated all around the sensor but the sensor itself is "in the shade" and therefore does not heat up. The temperature you "feel" on your skin in direct sunshine has to do with time of day/year, the colour of your skin, clothing, etc. That can not be directly related to air temperature as it's unrelated and will depend on the person.

You could put two different types of thermometer sitting out in direct sunshine and they would report two different temperatures, the same way that the bonnets of two cars of different colours will heat up by differing amounts.

We need to get out of our heads this idea of "in the shade".

Hard to say. It would depend on the amount of concrete around you, are you sheltered from the wind etc. Some other posters might be better qualified to say.

I remember sitting out in a sun trap in February 1998, 16c, calm and feeling like a summer's day. It's like weather sites who put a 'real feal' temperature.

Not a great day here in NCD.

It's not cold but too many showers around to be out and about.

Ah well a good day to get final bits sorted in shops before school returns.

Blue skies appearing and sunshine now in D5, 21 degrees

Good sunny spells now across Laois in a light enough westerly breeze. Temperatures are around the 21c to 22c mark. Nice enough day.

This is the grass minimum temperature thermometer at Durrow Climate Station just a few minutes ago. Air temperature is below 22c yet This grass minimum thermometer says its 28.6c. This is why we use Stevenson Screens to accurately record air temperature. The 28.6c is showing because of heat radiating back off the dry ground a few centimetres underneath and direct sunlight hitting the mercury tube. As our own skins absorb some sunlight and we feel heat radiating off the ground we can feel warmer than the actual air temperature, just like this little grass thermometer! Hope this helps 🙂

Just to add... the right hand side blue dot is at 19.3c and this is the temperature of the grass thermometer at 10am this morning. Overnight tonight the mercury will push that blue dot left down the scale until peak cold is achieved before rising once more tomorrow morning. The right hand side blue dot will remain at the lowest point achieved Overnight and thus we learn the grass minimum temperature at the next 10am read. At 10am the minimum figure is noted and I'll tilt the thermometer so the blue dot flows up the scale to reach the 10am grass temperature tomorrow and the whole process starts over again!

    Exciting stuff 😂

Heavy showers and overcast but warm. The humidity hits you when you venture outside.

A warm day today but not a patch on yesterday with so much cloud around all day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,677 ✭✭✭pauldry

Saturday was our sunniest day (as usual). Sunday cloudier and today showery but still 18c to 20c

    21⁰ Meath

still around 20 degrees here in Dublin at 10.30pm. So balmy!

A decent enough day in this part of south Laois, breezes dropped very light this evening and thick cloud rolled in, no rain though and it felt quite sultry - like being in Spain. Sunshine came and went most of the afternoon, but it was quite warm as highs got over 22c again today.

I see Kilkenny City got close to 24c, they seem to get higher than here at times in a westerly or a northeasterly.

Temperatures stayed high enough this evening up at around 20c, now back to 18c.

EDIT - just getting a light shower now after a dry day.

dull but warm here near Trim today...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,677 ✭✭✭pauldry

Yesterday had 8mm of rain here 12.7mm Markree and 0.5mm Claremorris so pretty localised. Today is raining on and off already. Temperatures still decent 17c compared to June's 12 to 14c but dry is gone I'd reckon though.

That rain shower last night dropped 0.3mm here in south Laois. Currently mostly cloudy and temperatures up near 18c. The south coast has rain nearby but looks like it has a target for South Wales going by the radar. A few light showers spreading across from the west, so a few of us could pick up those as the day wears on. Looking at the Met Eireann forecast, hopes for a warm and settled weekend look firmly dashed now. Perhaps the east doing well on Saturday, but thats it really.

While the next 5 to 6 days won't be completely dry or settled make the most of it because the Atlantic looks like it's going to be unleashed from next week in a way that we haven't seen since last February. There won't be a traditional back to school warm and settled week this year. We will be doing a total flip from summer to autumn in about 7 or 8 days time.

Wouldn’t be surprised if yet again we miss the heavier rain in Kildare this evening

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 7,371 ✭✭✭appledrop

The heat in that sun is unreal, wasn't expecting that today.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 17,923 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gonzo

I don't think there is much in the way of rain forcast.

Some heavier bursts might clip the SE coast.

Wales looks like it will take most of the rain over the next 24 hours.

    Untitled Image

The rain this weekend mostly focused on Sligo, Donegal and Mayo. Cavan/Monaghan may get some rain too.

    ECMOPUK00_222_18[1].png

The ECM above suggesting 10mm east to 30mm west and 50mm far west over the next week or so...

    GFSOPUK06_219_18[1].png

    This mornings GFS suggesting less...

    GEMOPUK00_222_18[1].png

    So too is the GEM.

    ICOOPUK00_180_18[1].png

ICON's output only goes to next Tuesday, but again a similar dry theme for much of the east and midlands and parts of the SW.

do you think that will happen? The rain never arrives in eastern areas anyway.

The forecast Atlantic regime is 9/10 days away in FI. Time for it to water down.
