at what stage will their names not be a safeguarded state secret

Would it be forever secret, as they were juveniles at the time?

I'd imagine he'll re-offend when released so I don't agree with their identities being hidden for ever more. Boy A is an adult now, he should be named and left to deal with the consequences.

That level of violence and lack of remorse at 13 is staggering.

He could be 18 now so I assume it's standard to move inmates to an adult prison when they reach 18.

What’s the big news? Why would they keep him in juvenile detention after he turned 18? Why would he be kept separate from other prisoners?

I can only read that boy B is 17. I am operating with only one good eye so could've misssed it.

Their names would be well known locally at this stage surely .

There is a big difference between having your name known locally and it being published. Maybe not while they are in prison but they will (unfortunately) be let out at some stage. If they move somewhere else then the people where they live might never find out.

The only reason I could see to keep their names secret is to protect the families. They should not suffer because of his actions. Those brothers/sisters and parents are innocent of that monsters actions.

Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue

The same parents who tried to “protect” them and not hand them in ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,325 ✭✭✭✭Donald Trump

I think the "theory" behind the principle in general is that individuals who commit crimes under a certain age should not be punished forever for that "mistake" they made when they were a child. Records are essentially wiped clean when a person becomes an adult for nearly all intents and purposes.

To reiterate, for the above I am not talking about this specific case. Am talking about the general theoretical principle. So they don't do it to protect the family. They do it to protect the criminal.

For the specific case, I would have no personal argument against the two people in question being named. Legally they can't be though.

That's boy B, boy A is 18 and has been transferred to an adult prison.

I've heard that other prisoners don't take kindly to anyone who sexually assaults and murders a child. Now, I've no idea how true that it, but it's likely he'll be segregated to minimise the risk of him being attacked in prison.

In the report the prison services have said the prison hasn't been named, but everyone there will know who he is and why he's there quickly.

One of the families have a reputation as very decent people (I don't know about the other family). And it's not just the parents. The murderers have younger siblings. Those siblings are young people who have never done anything wrong, soon to become adults themselves, head off to college etc. Let them get on with their lives.

You cannot have a system where convicted criminals cannot be named based on the impact to their family members.

The decision not to name them can be based on the criminal's protection or for the victim's protection but not on the criminal's family members. If that were the case, nobody would ever be named.

    How long were the sentences?

Yep they will. Believe or not bit most prisoners get to see the papers daily in prison and have T.Vs too so get to see the news too.

Its only a matter of them putting two and two together.

I can't imagine it will be easy for them in the prison and nor should it be.

Whatever happens to them is no fault but their own. They done something horrible and unspeakable to an innocent, beautiful, very naive young girl who just wanted to be liked for who she was. She did not deserve what happened to her but Boy A and Boy B deserve everything bad that happens to them.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

Sure there is a chance he will re-offend, but he might not.

I got caught for something pretty bad when I had been younger than these 2 guys. It got me into a lot of trouble and I certainly didn’t try to do anything like this again.

they are adults so therefore the move is appropriate.

should they be named ? It’s not up to the department of justice to name them…I don’t think.

however the news media probably should name them. They are providing a public service. The murderers have been protected due to their age. On attaining adulthood the news media should in the interest of public safety say…

” the boys convicted the murder and sexual assault and physical assault of Ana Kriegal are…X person and Y person “

don’t forget, poor Ana was physically assaulted, sexually assaulted and murdered. This wasn’t some accident, or game that went wrong, they called for her, targeted her, attacked her, raped her, tortured her, murdered her….…. Two little absolute abhorrent malevolent ghouls… The sentences handed down by the judge considering the nature of the crimes was shameful…reviewing their sentences after 8 and 12 year’s respectively ? Absolute jokeshop ‘justice’ system.

Those same fabulous parents who created the boys who raped and killed a young girl?

They should also have to face the consequences of their actions.

And the father of one shouting abuse at the judge.

That poor girl every time I see a picture of her I feel a sadness for her and then terrible anger of what happened her at the hands of those twisted b@stards

One of the boy's fathers seemed like a **** at the time of the trial but do people really believe that awful children ALWAYS have terrible parents? You know that's not true.

And what about the boys' siblings? We live in a world where people love taking their anger out on people who aren't to blame.

What they did doesn't imply much of a conscience. I'm assuming what you did was nothing compared to what they did.

Don't do the crime if you can't do the time.

Let him rot in adult prison. That poor girl suffered far more than he will.

The boys' siblings never even entered my mind (I didn't know if he had any).

They must get a serious amount of hassle at school.
