For the European Championship road race on Sunday, would the finish suit an on-form Sam?

yeah would be right up his alley you'd have to imagine, pretty similar to the Eschborn-Frankfurt finish that he won back in May too

Ah guys honestly , was he really "injured" last year or was he trying to get away from QS, what has he won this year, and now you say Euros will suit him , someone said on here few months back he was on form for TDF, as for Irish roads , there are no mountains here or did I miss them ? and even sprinters need to get over the hills to win, am I totally wrong , and nobody mentioned the younger sprinters as I have already said are way better than Sam.

I will be first here next week if he wins Euros , but for god sake look at thing as they are . I mentioned Everton as Bora were good with Sagan , now focus seems to be going for overall. But the lead out train at QS will not be beaten . SB is a sprinter not a GC contender, again he has contract with Bora , did you ever hear of contracts being broken , sure there is a clause there some where, Sam has won nothing for Bora did he even collect points this year.

Delighted for Ryan that he's going too, well deserved.

Surprised at that, the team looks a bit all over the shop - is that 4 GC leaders, and a sprint train for Sam?

Very surprised. Really hopes he explodes out of the blocks. He'll be well aware of all the chatter, well meaning and otherwise, about his form this year. Hopefully he can use it to his advantage.

Bushman hasn’t been a leader for a while. Same with Kelderman really. They’ll do what they did in the Giro and use attacks and breaks to try and win stages and see how Hindley is in the second week. Could be a fun race as plenty of GC/climbers there

Looks like no Demare, Jacobsen, Groenewegen, Philipsen so Merlier, Ackermann and Kaden Groves are the sprint opposition.

Sam has won nothing for Bora did he even collect points this year

While he struggled in the early part of the season, he'd improved by May/June, but really hasn't had the opportunity since then. Sunday will hopefully give a good idea as to where he's at.

Not expecting much but glad he is going. We also get a fun 3 weeks of Mullen joking about struggling over every little hill 😁

Nice vote of confidence in the three lads in sending them over, hopefully the sprint team can pick up one win at least.

There are 2 flat stages in Netherlands early doors in the Vuelta - after a Team Time Trial of all things.

Good opportunities for a sprinter without knackering themselves first over mountains & I imagine will be a high profile event in Netherlands.

That may have swayed the decision in Sam's favour.

That line-up tallies with what the DS was saying last weekend actually, although I'm still really surprised he made the team. The strength or otherwise of the sprint competition might have been a factor, although Mads Pedersen needs to be added to the list above.

At least we'll have some Irish interest in the Vuelta this year!

Delighted for Sam and Ryan. I hope they perform well and have a good race, a stage win would be great as well.

FWIW Sam is Bora’s 6th top UCI point scorer on 466. Just behind Buchmann on 476 and ahead of Kamna on 435

Mullen has 75 but he’s outside the top 10 so doesn’t count

Dunbar has 344 (15th for Ineos, doesn’t count). Healy has 141 for EF (10th, does count)

Delighted to see Sam going , a little surprised no Archibold ? Hopefully Sam can have a good race and try to put last 18 months behind him.

At least a little more interest in watching now. Always a great race to watch.

100% still one of my favourite finishers, excluding the Green Jersey. He can be a savage on some of those uphil finishes. Some on here making it out like the green jersey was all he ever done but on the one day races and a few stage races he has had some of the most spectacular finishes. He has gone off the front and left the peloton, he has sprinted form 1km out, all in races where the level was high.

Should we dig out the Burgos win again??? Yeah why not!!!!!

There's an awful lot of people who just want to dismiss Irish cyclists in general and say they're rubbish, I don't understand why. Yes we over-hype them to an extent but sure that's only natural

The imola stage win in the Giro is my favourite fwiw. Effectively a classic style race

So Sam mentioned wanting to go after the points jersey in the vuelta.... Has something changed in regards to the allocation of sprint points at the end of mountain stages?... Always seemed to rule out the possibility (rare occasions eccepted) that a pure sprinter could win it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,814 ✭✭✭✭Squidgy Black

Jakobsen won it last year, so he must think there’s enough flat stages (I think there’s 6 predicted bunch sprints) plus the intermediates if they fall before big climbs, that he can do similar

I think they switched to the TdF points system.

Listened to the Lantern Rouge (very opinionated presenters) preview last night - they did a team by team, stage by stage - Sam not tipped for any of the sprints.

Hopefully he's saved everything for the next 3 weeks.

They also have a pod on the latest transfer team by team, good coverage on Eddie's move to Bike Exchange

Forget winning the race just get lost in the woods and go sell the bike somewhere.
