errr governments frequently make decisions that negatively impact citizens and taxpayers…

just now with these decisions…. They know that the will impact negatively this country and it’s citizens….this is only the tip of the iceberg….

you’ll probably have them advocating after a few months that we give them all passports.

Politicians don’t care about the man on the street, they all have two pensions, generous wages, housing, health insurance…. The rest of the citizens…

Absolutely. This insane idea that Ukraine and Russia are in some sort of full scale war is nonsense. Vast parts of Ukraine haven't seen as much as a firework go off. Life is more or less back to normal in Kiev for example. This will rumble on for a few more months and Ukraine will be forced into signing some sort of peace accord in the winter.

Why not? Tented communities are a perfectly adequate response in situation like this. Irish people have gotten far too soft, just because camping/ tenting is below many here nowadays, doesn't mean that it's not perfectly adequate to deal with emergency accommodation needs. Been used for many, many years.

And this is a war that Europe is involved in, even if not directly, yet. It's the biggest conflagration in most peoples lifetimes and threatens to spread further westwards unless contained.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,180 ✭✭✭✭One eyed Jack

That might be so in the immediate term, such as the introduction of USC and so on, but it’s for the greater benefit of Irish society as a whole in the long term, as opposed to just being mindful of the negative impact it will have on taxpayers in the short term.

It’s true, politicians don’t care about the man on the street, they can’t afford to, because they have the interests of the country as a whole to consider, as opposed to just individuals who pay tax.

I’m certainly not opposed to the idea of refugees being granted citizenship and being eligible to apply for an Irish passport should they wish to, it isn’t costing me anything, but it would be of great benefit to the Irish nation as a whole that we would have just gained a whole new group of Irish citizens who are now in the same boat as everyone else politicians don’t care for, with the ability to vote for politicians who will cater for their interests, which may, or may not, and probably don’t, align with your interests for yourself.

Never mind a tent, they’ll be asking us to give them cars at some point….we are already giving them driving licences free gratis too, of course…

Europe are not involved in this war. If it DOES spread further west… it’s WW3… everyone involved

No. We're **** not. Why do you keep on lying?!

At the start of the conflict, Ukrainians here under temporary protection could exchange their Ukrainian licence - if they had one - for an Irish one. They stopped doing that months ago.

I didnt see anybody say do nothing.

Just don't $%&# it up for the rest of us. We already took in 60,000 refugees since Jan is that not enough ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,498 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Haha How is it lying ? We’ve already done it…as I stated :)

In addition, we are giving them free housing, free healthcare, free travel, free access to practically every service the state can enable people with…..

its not unreasonable to suggest they will be seeking further help.

’international protection’… they are being enabled with vastly more help then protection…

I said it before, you give the left the LGB, then they come back for the TQXYZ. They will never admit it's enough. We have helped them more then enough (the Ukrainians). The majority are economic migrants getting everything for free.

If the British attacked Ireland, we were all put on a plane to wherever, say to Denmark, Sweden, USA, …..

and Denmark say were to offer….modular home, to live in temporarily… with water, electricity, wifi, a tv, bathroom, fridge, freezer and cooker

    image.jpeg

free public transport within city boundaries...a certain level of basic healthcare..with a percentage of a social welfare payment…

120 per week… sounds reasonable ? I’d think all my Christmas’s has come together.

Europe is a continent, Europe is not at war.. imagining Leo what ? ok, I think you are in the wrong forum. :)

Getting a hard on for being a pontificating busy body

I think you are in the wrong forum.

Nah.. he's trying to conflate Europe the landmass with Europe the political entity (primarily consisting of the EU and its members) - just as Leo did.

Failing in the same way too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 42,959 ✭✭✭✭Boggles

If you could point out where either Leo or me mentioned the EU, in your good time.

Again the sentence which has rattled so many jimmies.

“Europe is at war. There’s a terrible war happening on our continent".

Of course if your view point is that there is no war in Ukraine and even if there was Ukraine isn't in Europe anyway so it doesn't matter, you might take issue with it.

The peaceful African nation of Ukraine. 🤣

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,498 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Somewhat disingenuous again, expressing an opinion now equals rattled… apparently ;)

    europe, ain’t, at war ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,915 ✭✭✭Nermal

By this logic, he could also have said 'the world is at war', given that southeast Ukraine is located within the world, as well as within the continent of Europe.

Is the world at war, Boggles?

Less than 40,000, but sure, just come up with a figure inflated by 1/3. But did you not get the memo from Strumms, you're supposed to be saying it's 100,000 or 200,000!

It's lying because it's not true, and you know it. You stated it's what's happening. It isn't. It happened for a brief period, then the powers that be said no, you can swap a Ukrainian licence for an Irish one. As is standard practice for any foreign national coming to live in Ireland.

Wait, so you want to ban Ukrainian refugees and what, criminalise homosexuality, or something? Will all the women have to wear red dresses and a white wimple, too? 🤡

We have taking in enough. So yes ban them coming untill we have the resources or others go back.

primarily consisting of the EU and its members

You snuck that one in well to try and exclude Ukraine from Europe, political entity or otherwise 😁

Ukraine (Ukrainian: Україна, romanized: Ukraïna, is a country in Eastern Europe. It is the second-largest European country after Russia, covering approximately 600,000 square kilometres (230,000 sq mi), and has a population of around 40 million people.

Might want to let the Council of Europe know too that Ukraine is not a European political entity -

But that still doesn't mean "Europe is at War". not by any stretch of the imagination,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,180 ✭✭✭✭One eyed Jack

I don’t imagine Leo’s imagination was all that stretched in concocting the notion that Europe is at war, but within the context in which he said it, do you think he might have had a point given the impact of the war on the rest of Europe?

Asked what the government is doing to secure housing and rooms for those who will be moved out in the coming weeks, Mr Varadkar said it is “looking at all options”.

“We shouldn’t lose sight of the bigger picture here,” Mr Varadkar added.

“Europe is at war. There’s a terrible war happening on our continent.

“Five million Ukrainians have been displaced from their homes.

“That’s roughly the entire population of the state and they’ve now been dispersed across Europe, and roughly 1% of them have come to Ireland.

“There isn’t a country in Europe that had 50,000 or 100,000 vacant properties in case of war happened.

“That’s just not how the world works.

“We’re doing the best we can to accommodate people as best we can in all sorts of different settings, whether it’s rented accommodation, whether it’s hotels and B&Bs, whether it’s modular accommodation, or whether it’s in people’s homes, and that’s what we’ll continue to do.”

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,211 ✭✭✭✭Suckit

No matter what context he said it in, he was wrong. Europe is not at war.

He could have said it this way, and should have, if he wanted to be correct.

“We shouldn’t lose sight of the bigger picture here,” Mr Varadkar added.

“There’s a terrible war happening on our continent.

I don't ever remember anyone claiming Europe was at war during the Yugoslav wars, Bosnian, or Georgia, Chechen Republic etc.

I can't think anyone else in the world believes Europe is at war, other than Leo, Boggles and very possibly a few others on here that just agree with whatever Leo says or does, although I have only seen it said by those two.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,180 ✭✭✭✭One eyed Jack

No matter what context he said it in, he was wrong. Europe is not at war.

It clearly DOES matter what context he said it in, especially when it comes down to the idea of arguing over whether Ukraine is even IN Europe, or not!

World wars have been started over less 😂

It was referred to as the Balkans conflict/war but some said war in Europe in the headlines but never Europe at war as that implies that it’s all or most of Europe.

It’s a conflict/war in one country right now, the Balkans was multiple countries so it’s disingenuous at best and an out right lie at worst but Leo only cares about the headlines, the facts be damned.
