Is there a spec for Gates and Gate posts to be used when drawing a TAMs grant on them?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,079 ✭✭✭Jonnyc135

I'd somehow say there is, last steel posts I got for a gate came with a big sticker on them saying TAMS11 approved

Whats the going rate for a decent pedigree charlois ram lamb

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 110 ✭✭Murang

I recently reseeded 10 acres I was thinking of buying 50-60 store lambs for it what do you need ref tags and all that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,079 ✭✭✭Jonnyc135

You will need a flock number and sheep dispatch book for selling them, re tags they will be tagged when buying them but no harm requesting a box of sheep tags incase ones fall out.

You just need the department to activate it for sheep. Quick phonecall should do the job.

Neibours ewes and lambs are flat our breaking Into my glas wild bird cover on and off for the past 5 years...sick of running them back out to his at this stage,..asked him numerous times to fence them in to his own but never bothers...anyone any ideas of what to do?..often tempted to load up a go of his lambs a sell them to teach him a lesson but only a thought of rage as I'm not going to break the law

Looking to buy a good automatic vaccination gun….I have had a lot of bother in the past with them in that I would have them set and calibrated and checked every 20 sheep but when I would give 100 sheep 2ml each I would have used either only 150 mls or 250 mls from the bottle and obviously vaccines are too expensive to get it wrong…..for the past number of years I went back to using a few 2ml syringes but it’s painfully slow so I’m want to try a n automatic gun injector again, are any of you using a reliable one that won’t let you down ! Thanks

That’s what I use. It’s the finest and doesn’t miss a trick, although when I get to near finishing the bottle you have to be careful not to suck in air.

there’s ones with a long tube and you hang the bottle around your neck

Prima tech I think, they're a great job. No risk of a tube getting caught or pulled.

Going to start feeding what lambs I have left as grass is gone very tight. Is there a big difference in the price of meal in 25kg and bulk bags?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 591 ✭✭✭Young95

How are lads lambs thriving in general this year ? Say the drought has mine back abit

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,578 ✭✭✭J.O. Farmer

Will it pay you to do that with the price of meal. I'd be slow to go with meal this early this year.

If they're light no point feeding expensive meal, it'll cost too much to finish them.

If they're forward stores you might do as well in the mart when you add the price of meal onto what you get now.

It's not about maximising the money got from each lamb but maximising the profit/ minimising the loss. No point in putting €25 of meal in to get €20 more when selling, you'd have €25 more per lamb but €5 less better off.

You might be able to sell some light stores and keep grass for forward stores.

Question for those of ye with experience of the ram effect..just have a small few ewes and would like them tight.as I can as will have a week of late January/ early Feb..if I put the ram beside them this day fortnight 21st for a couple of days ..then put him with them 2weeks after that on Sunday September 4th would that work? Or is is 16 days from initial introduction..any advice appreciated thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,492 ✭✭✭✭wrangler

For it to work properly, ewes cant be within smell or sight of the rams for 60 days before the initial introduction.

On saying that..... it will be a help to do as you say, The rams chatting up the ewes through a gate will help them to start cycling.

It helps to wind up the rams too.

Then let them out to the ewes fourteen days from the initial introduction

Perfect thanks for that ..ewes.have.been away from ram for 10months..ram lambs gone more 2 months too I'd.say..

Anyone ever get a ram with a hole in their back, id say he was picked by a magpie and was too lazy to do anything about it, have applied tar oil to keep flies away, has anyone any ideas on what to do or should it heal itself? thanks in advance

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,259 ✭✭✭Kevhog1988

Sounds like it might of been a cluster of maggots. Spray with alamycin or terramycin and then tar it i would say.

I was charged €32 for a tub of stockholm tar today. Only noticed this evening

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 568 ✭✭✭joe35

Had it before, probably a nick from shearing and flies/maggots eat at it.

Bit of jeano ointment. Not sure of the proper name or spelling 🙈, but it's the stuff dairy men use on cows to keep flies away.

    Cheno unction..Great stuff

Great to put on ewes teats when drying off after.weaning too..keeps the bag soft and flies away

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,259 ✭✭✭Kevhog1988

Bad with flys at the moment.

I've seen farms where birds pick holes on the backs of sheep, they can be very persistent whenthey start,
