Newcastle helpinng pay off Burnley's £65m loan debt with all these transfers.

Woods & Pope and now Cornet.

Not the names Newcastle fans were hoping for when the Saudi bought the club.

Was surprised Everton didnt go for him over spending £20M on McNeill

Thats kinda been a thing for a long time, didn't Liverpool get done for it with VVD? Or had to back off to not be reported 🤔 can't remember, but tapping up is the first step of a transfer these days and I'm sure it has been for a long time.

Very odd , maybe they did and Cornett said he has a new club,

Cornett scored more goals for Burnley last season than Dwight has in his whole career

Looks like "More Than a Club"© are now trying to force ter Stegen out of the club as their attempts to force deJong haven't worked.

ter Stegen say he won't be leaving eaither.

Sergino Dest is also refusing to leave or to be forced out

Not good for Kompany and his Burnley team who get the season underway tonight at Huddersfield. You'd think Newcastle would have had their summer transfers sorted out by now.

I know Wood did not set the world on fire with scoring a lot of goals since his move but he has solid Premier league experience as a centre forward and with Wilson out injured filled a vital role in Newcastle avoiding relegation in my opinion. The games I saw him playing for Newcastle involved many examples where he kept the ball possession for the Newcastle team to counterattack, closed down the opposition and kept the other teams back line on its toes much better than any other option Newcastle had to play in that position. He has scored ten goals or more in 4 of the last five premier league seasons so I think he has been a very sinsible signing even if it was more in a role supporting other players scoring rather than getting the goals himself. I rate Pope as a very good goalkeeper and also seen some great scores by Cornet last season in the premier league so I'd have no complaints about those signings as a Newcastle fan. There are a lot of over payed super star type players that have been linked to the club that would have had a much bigger chance of unsettling the squad rather than contributing to a gradual improvement and making the club competitive at the top level in the longer term.

There were reports of attempts to sign a young french striker (Hugo Ekitike) earlier in the window that fell through and who now has gone to PSG so think the attacking options being linked now are back up options for Newcastle rather than their first choice signings.

City did same thing with Kane last summer. I hope the Brighton chairman digs in like Daniel Levy did

Just what many said, doesn't matter how much money you have, there's just some places certain footballers don't want to move to.

CBS Sports did a wide ranging interview with Laporta from bringing Messi back to being offered Ronnie

    On Frenkie de Jong

CBS Sports: You also need to resolve Frenkie de Jong's future. Will he stay at Barcelona?

Laporta: The first thing to say is we want Frenkie to stay at Barcelona. We love the player and him as a human being. I want him to stay at Barcelona. He's a high-quality player and a good guy. I also know that he wants to stay.

CBS Sports: How much of a headache has it been trying to get Frenkie to take a pay cut?

Laporta: All we are doing with Frenkie is the same as the rest of the squad. The signings coming in have adjusted their salary to the new structure. But Frenkie has a contract and we respect that. We can't force him to take a pay cut. It's his decision

We are trying to manage the football club in a prudent and sustainable way. So we have to have these talks and we do so in a calm and considered way. We have explained the situation and are grateful to any players who can help us. It was the same with Dembele and I am very grateful to him. And after months of talks, he accepted a renegotiation of his salary and he can be proud of his decision.

CBS Sports: What happens if Frenkie doesn't take a pay cut and just stays at Barcelona?

Laporta: Then he will continue. Has has a contract. We will respect that decision. For us, he's a Barcelona player. We count on him.

CBS Sports: Can you categorically confirm Frenkie won't join Manchester United?

Laporta: In football, you never know. I can't say categorically. It all depends on the different parties. But in principle, I can say there is a strong possibility he stays, and I can say as president I will do my best for him to stay at Barcelona.

BS Sports: What is your response to Gary Neville, who says de Jong should take legal action?

Laporta: No answer. I respect his opinion. But in my opinion he's not right because I insist we are respecting all our players. We follow the contracts. If we invest in new players it's to make the club more competitive. It's a circle: You invest in new players, the fans engage and that in turn improves our economy. Gary has been a very good football player for Manchester United. I respect his opinion and that's all I have to say.

CBS Sports: What did you make of the Dutch players union chairman, Evgeniy Levchenko, who accused you of extortion tactics?

Laporta: There is no extortion being used on Frenkie or anyone else. I respect his opinion, but if talks between two parties counts as extortion then I think this guy is wrong.

CBS Sports: What makes you comfortable asking players to cut wages?

Laporta: The club has a payroll that's 40% higher than our competitors. We have to reduce this and it's not easy. But the players we are talking about -- who have taken pay cuts -- all love Barça. They reduced their salaries for the love of the club. All the players, new and old, understand the constraints. And they want to be artists who bring Barcelona back. They are aware they can be part of one of the most splendorous periods in the club's history.

    CBS Sports:...............

Feels like City's past spending on that position has kind of backed them into a corner - they've firmly and repeatedly established that they feel a fullback of the quality to be a first teamer for them is worth 50m. So simply by going for Cucurella they've confirmed they believe him to be of that caliber, which pretty much does Brighton's negotiating for them.

I think McNeil is a good signing for Everton. He's not a winger though, I thought he could be when he first broke through but he doesn't have the pace for it but I think he's really good on the ball. You either play him as an attacking full back or turn him into an attacking midfielder imo. He regressed last year but Burnley did in general.

I bet he's a fan favourite at Everton by the end of the season.

You'd imagine they'd want Maguire money for him?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,876 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

His contract expires in 2024, so that might have an influence. Big decision for Maddison this summer, either sign another contract with Leicester and lock himself in there for the future or move. If he chooses to move, it might help facilitate a lower transfer fee around the £50m mark.

McNeil is an interesting one. Like was stated above, it's a wonder a big club hasn't taken a punt on him before and tried to make a fullback out of him, he's an absolute Wand of a ceitog on him. Might be going from the frying pan to the fire going from Burnley to Everton though, unless Frank upps his game.

Fair play to Brighton, altho the player has handed in a transfer request too I believe so the last thing they need is to be stuck with a player who clearly wants to leave.

I'm sure common ground will be reached and he'll be a MCFC player before the transfer window closes.

I’m sure Brighton will get their £50m for him before too long, the City owner will just have a root down the back of the couch later on and they’ll find that extra 20 million.

Brighton know well who they’re negotiating with. Selling players to City is a dream for most clubs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 61,272 ✭✭✭✭Agent Coulson

Well Barca are reportedly after B Silva next and Barca seem to be getting all there targets this summer so City should have a few bob to pay for another £50m fullback.

They'll get someone in UAE to sponsor the tea cups in the canteen or something and that'll sort it :)

See Chelsea moving to move Kepa on, Napoli a likely destination, Chelsea paying 3/4 of his wages

I don't think they need to sell him to fund the move. Sure aren't they well in a net profit for this window.

Would his wages provide much cap space for players who are going to be on a lot more than he was?
