Broja looked a player with plenty of potential in his first few months, very direct, quick and powerful, with ability on the ball but Southampton are dreadful and the owners seem to have zero interest in the club. A kid can only do so much.

Newcastle, Leicester, Wolves, West Ham, Brighton, Villa could all could with a striker. And 30m on Broja seems a good bet. But if I was Chelsea I wouldn't sell him yet.

City have been doing excellent work in the transfer market for a number of years and we never really hear them get any credit for it. For all the talk of Liverpool and their net spend, I was just going through the ins and outs for both LFC and MCFC on transfermarkt since Liverpool won the title and Man City actually have the better net spend of the 2 clubs. Its also impressive when you consider the fact that they've won both titles since then.

I think your sums are off a bit - over those 2 seasons you're talking about, City had spent ~12 million more than Liverpool.

I presume you've counted this current summer's spending in there, which is at odds with the point you made about them impressively winning the title in those 2 years, where they actually did outspend their opposition.

But sure either way, prior to the point in time you've chosen they did already have a pretty massive, expensively assembled and multi-league winning squad (which had earned the first and second record points totals in history), so it's not too surprising... much of their squad has been very settled for quite a number of years at this stage. Over those 2 years they just supplemented with a couple lads - in genuine first team contention, only Graelish and Diaz really (and briefly Torres before he left again... an argument could maybe be made for Ake, but he's very much a back up to a backup).

The outgoings this year are the most interesting thing really, a sign of Pep really shaking things up for the first time with 3 first team regulars sold (and Fernandinho leaving too).

Much the same as Klopp really who broke transfer records all round when he joined Liverpool.

Mod: this type of posting adds nothing to discussion in the forum and is only going to lead to bickering. Please discuss 2022 summer transfers in this thread or don't post in it.

As usual, if a poster has any queries on this note please use PM.

    Barca supposedly signing Kounde now.

    How are they doing this!

That's a great strategy, now they'll have even less money to keep the lights on down the line.

The guys making these decisions will be long gone before the lights go out.

Short term thinking, debt is not a problem but borrowing from the future for short term spending is never a good idea.

Really looks like Barca are banking on the ESL and the TV rights they've cashed in on being non existent

    Ah, I did not realise.

All seems very much like kicking the can down the road though, it’s going to be a problem unless the super rich take over in the future.

I suppose if the club is at risk of folding in the future it could become reality, possibly getting ahead of myself though!

They really need a successful season this year. In fact the next few years.

Really need to be bringing in huge earnings from winning things, so a major risk for them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,472 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

Has that been a root cause of their problems? Has populist presidents and prospective presidents out bidding themselves to bring in mega expensive signings they don't need been what caused their problems as much as anything else? Pity the fans didn't shout stop and have some sense in all this.

Bayern have agreed deal worth up to 28.5m with Rennes for 17 year old Mathys Tel. A lot of money for a player who has only 10 first team appearances to his name, but is apparently one of Europe's biggest talents.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 14,033 ✭✭✭✭machiavellianme

But do they not already have a bunch of signings that they cannot register until someone leaves or is that all over as a result of this injection too?

It feels like they are playing Fantasy Football with Monopoly money but with no real plan on what they need to create a functioning team. Just buy all the shiny players and cross your pinkies!

I think it is a moronic signing by Forest to be honest. Lingard will be thinking about his next move by November, will have no interest in a relegation battle by January, and his wages could cause a stir in the changing room before a ball is kicked.

I'm wondering if Ed Woodward has taken a job at Forest with this signing.

Simon Harris is monitoring the situation...

Can't say I disagree with any of this.

For whatever ability Lingard may have, he has shown nothing at all to suggest he's the man to be hanging your hat on in a Relegation battle, nothing to suggest he has either the class or the grit to make a huge difference.

Its a very good deal for Forest, the owners are pretty wealthy and Lingard will want to earn his next big paycheck.

If it works out it was money well spent on him and they can let him merc himself elsewhere, if not they aren't stuck with him next year. They cant really loose since its only a one year deal, if it was a two year deal there's a big risk.

Forest are probably gunna add at least 2 more attacking players (definitely one more striker + another striker/#10/winger). So if Lingard downs tools he'd just be benched with Brennan Johnson replacing him at the midfield point.

Edit. I mean depending on who Forest sign as a striker (whether it'll be a starter or back up) theres a question if Lingard even starts for Forest.

In what way has he shown a lack of grit when played?

The issue is imo that he plays better in a good team with a defined role and he may find it tough to be the guy tasked with doing everything. But his West Ham stint showed he may be able for that too with a bit of freedom.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,954 ✭✭✭✭yourdeadwright

Have to disagree regardless of how rich the owners are

Football clubs shouldn't just throw massive wages at players who don't deserve them in hope they perform,

Barcelona & Manchester United two of the biggest clubs in the world are currently trying to recover from having that strategy in recent years, (AC Milan before that)

Its simply a poor way to run a football club & also can lead to problems in the dressing room,

Its like something ud try on Football Manger

There banking on a lad who had two brilliant 6 months spells in the last 10 years,

I guess time will tell a d we'll all only know for sure in May

How are they hanging there hat on him he will be 1 player part of the team, his wages are big but it's not crazy by any means,

Lingard obviously hasn't got the offers he wanted so he is backing himself to play well enough to get that offer for next season which sounds like a very motivated plater tbh.

I've no time for lingard but the signing is fine he has always worked hard when he plays and has enough talent for a relegation team

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,755 ✭✭✭✭pjohnson

Yeah I dont see the whole "hanging hopes on/relying on Lingard" argument either. Theres no guarantee hes gunna be even starting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,219 ✭✭✭hawaii501

10mil is nothing if they stay up and I think that's the max outlay as well so they'll gladly pay that altogether.

Lingard will hardly not try otherwise he'll have no offers I'm the prem next season. Sure wasn't he going for 20mil this time last year excluding wages?

I think its a no brainer for Forest with a 1-year deal. He has always worked hard to be fair to him, it's just his off field antics that are so annoying.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 6,244 ✭✭✭This is it

If Lingard wants a decent move in 12 months he'll need to give it his all. Downing tools in a relegation battle will do him no favours.

I think it's a decent deal when you consider there's no fee for the player. They hopefully get the WH Lingard for the season, Lingard shows his stuff and gets a decent contract to take him towards the end of his career.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,876 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

What players are a better option for Forest than Lingard? Lingard is versatile, knows the league, and is playing for his next contract with a point to prove.

Given that any potential signing is gonna cost ~£2m+ in wages alone, you're looking at a £8m transfer fee max.

His last year at United is a mess because he clearly wanted to leave and they wouldn't sell him or play. The season before that he proved that he has some ability in the right environment. It's not top level but it's a good PL level.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,140 ✭✭✭adaminho

I also doubt he's going to down tools in a relegation battle as I'd say that 10m is probably 8m and 2m staying up bonus. I know Utd fans don't like him for the Dab Bros stuff but he's an English international.

Why are people still using the £10m figure? It's been well reported that he'll earn somewhere between £4m and £6m in wages depending on how many of the bonus conditions he can reach.

I highly doubt he got a £4m signing on fee to bring that to £10m.
