Had trouble establishing myself on the club senior team at 19, not in the clique, my dad didn't play. Another BS part of club, family cliques. Yet was playing Fitzgibbon from 18 and senior county 4 years after.

Club is great for some but they can be cliques and clannish.

Yet it’s where everyone starts out.

For another thread some day however 👍

I've kinda replied to you. I had moved location and didn't grow up with lads in the club I ended up with.

Some club victories meant a lot but county more.

Expected win for Kerry the bookies and their punters had Kerry winning by 4 and as ever they are rarely wrong.

Galway in fairness to them gave it a right good shot 0-16 each with 66 minutes played and just came up short against what was the best team in Ireland this year. Galway forward line talked up but in reality have two top class and consistent forwards one of them produced his best performance of year (Shane Walsh) and the other was marked out of the game (Damien Comer) and in the end Galway management not making the switches to get him more into the game prove costly.

Some had doubts about how much Kerry's defence had really improved because the idea was they weren't fully "tested" but I think today and against Dublin showed the improvement they have made especially with conceding soft goals as they did under the last management. That defensive improvement has been key in winning this All Ireland.

This Kerry team will win another All Ireland or two but I'll be surprised if they dominate. Three different winners in the last three years and I think we'll see a very open championship in the years ahead, Galway reaching this years year and giving a decent account of themselves in the final should give plenty of encouragement for plenty of counties watching on

I think it's wide open for next year.

Kerry won it but hardly look invisible.

Dublin have now failed to make two finals in a row and have a lot of questions.

Tyrone may bounce back after a year off.

A management change and recoverd injuries might help Mayo.

Not sure how good Galway are, got away with running out of steam v Mayo and Armagh but not today, plus they were the easier side of the draw.

All to play for in 2023.

Exciting it was I suppose if you were neutral, but bar Walsh and Clifford very few stood out and i thought skill levels yesterday were very ordinary bar the two players who were super.

Atmosphere was terrible too for final. It seemed very flat at times and like a regular game.

Kerry wont care but anyone who thinks Sam is going outside the big two in next couple of years will be disappointed. Kerry were average yesterday and still won easily enough.

Crap rule and the fact you can catch one at the corner flag and bring it out to the 13 makes it even worse. Geaney made 10m on his yesterday.

Fisted points need to go too. A scourge on the game.

Peter keane is going to be a sick man this morning. Developed this Kerry team to what it has become but somehow couldn't get them over the line.

Also Mayo teams of 2012- 2021 couldnt even win one All Ireland, Kerry made it look easy yesterday buy Mayo will never understand it how they could never win it.

Good aul Joe. Clifford wasn't even the best forward on display yesterday yet he's already been crowned the greatest ever 🤦‍♂️

"Well, yeah, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man"

Clifford made two good marks and kicked a nice point or two from play but nothing outrageous.

Imagine is Clifford had scored a point like Walsh did out on the right hand side after battling off a defender, on the wrong side from a tight angle. The commentators would have came there and then.

I've seen many players put in performances like Clifford did yesterday and there wasn't as much fawning over it.

An entertaining game with the better team, or squad, winning. Modern football is a twenty man game and the impact of the respective benches was the deciding factor. Some wonderful scores throughout, with Walsh for Galway and David Clifford for the Kingdom putting in sensational displays. Mention also of Cillian McDaid who had a brilliant match and brilliant year.

Couple of random points - the forward mark is an awful rule. I would love to see it gone. Secondly, for all the talk of Dublin's demise, they were very close. How significant must the absence of Con O'Callaghan in that semi-final feel for them now?

Decent championship by all accounts, bar the dublin game, kerry always looked comfortable enough. Galway lacking forwards ultimately hurt them yesterday. An interesting decade ahead, kerry will feel this team has more to give with their age profile.

He was a huge loss, Dublin probably win if he plays but I felt this year dublin were being dragged by the older players rather than any brilliant managment set up, they have serious work to do to get back to their old evels.

2 rules that need to change.

The mark rule and hand passing over the bar.

Yes, instead of rewarding teams for kick passing and offensive play we should reward defenders for swarming around anyone catching a high ball and make it harder for attackers to score, rewarding blanket defensive play even more. 🙄

There is a reason these rules came about in the first place

Yes cause it really has improved the game right?

I would generally agree that the mark rule is a bit meh, but two of Clifford's catches yesterday were excellent given the circumstances. One of them he soared above two men, landed on his arse and probably have been bottled up and conceded a free out had the rule not existed. So in that regard, the catch probably merited a score.

But yeah, Geaney's was ridiculous, and there have been a multitude of instances since it was introduced where a fella caught the ball a couple of inches off the ground and took the subsequent mark. That doesn't make for a great spectacle either.

Kerry could start to dominate the decade now. They got the monkey off their backs. They are the one team that always come back and win and beat a team that might have an upper hand over them in the end. They do everything right in the county in that if a manager or players aren't delivering they are gone. No wonder they are so successful. The winner of this All Ireland was never in doubt. I think Kerry will have over 40 All Irelands by the end of this decade.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,734 ✭✭✭timmyntc

Yes it has! Unless you'd prefer if Kerry handpassed the ball laterally for 5mins at a time until the Galway defence slip up and Kerry can get a shot away

We were treated to plenty of great kickpassing and fielding yesterday because of it

Rewarding a basic fundamental skill of football is a sign of how things have gone.

Tom Parsons is a standout for me in that he rarely ever kicked a ball.

If you're going to keep the mark, I'd suggest having it inside the 21 only, it has to be caught at head height.

A 20m pass into the stomach of an attacker does not deserve a free shot at goal.

I don't get the hatred for the hand pass over the bar for a point.

It's can be a very smart play when it's used.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,994 ✭✭✭Tombo2001

    Bit of context here.

The last time Dublin played Kerry in championship, they drew the first game before winning a close second. This time round they were very unlucky not to draw the semi. Thats a small margin. And they were without a marquee forward on the day, arguably their best player and main goal threat. They are not that far away from their 'old levels'.

Farrell had a good year and Dublin will be a threat next year, they have a good chance of winning it.

Thought Galway had it but the paucity on their bench was the difference in the end. Enjoyable final for the neutral.

Clifford will always know there was a better player on the field on the day. Superb contest between them.
