First time home insurance - any recommended brokers

Hi,

Has anyone noticed first time home insurance has increased a lot recently (along with everything else...)?

When we were searching for a house, I was getting quotes from some of the larger brokers, Chill, AnPost etc... and now, a few months later, the quotes we are getting on the same property, that we have settled on are a few hundred more expensive ~7-800. Rural bungalow, no flood risk etc.... Few months back the quotes for the same house were ~4-500

Can anyone recommend a decent broker that they have found good value?

Firstly make sure you are actually not over insuring, use the SCSI rebuilt calculator to get the rebuild cost you need. Also check your contents insurance is the right level.

Be careful using that calculator as the figures are effective from April 2021 and construction costs have rocketed between and now.

not sure if it's ok to mention them on here, i have 2 that I have found to be the best and cheapest, and another that seems to be competitive with them, but I've never used them.

I haven't noticed much increase except a relevant increase due to the increased insurable amount.

Insurance companies have a balancing act to play on what they insure. If they are too heavy on 3 bed semis in Dundrum, they will increase the premium so that they get less customers. Likewise if they have very few rural standalone houses, they will reduce the premium to bring that number up.

Its ever changing, so shop around. For me, Zurich had the best deal this year. Last year it was Liberty.

Beware of brokers. Due to the lowish cost of house insurance its not really worth their while, so they don't necessarily look for the lowest price.

Thanks all for your replies and suggestions - so far Zurich direct are coming in the cheapest, including brokers.
