Does anyone know what tree this is? There are a few of them in a big group of ash trees near a stream near me

looks like alder to me - and they like being near streams.

They do look like Common Alder to me - Alnus glutinosa

Although my first thought was Hazel which is vaguely similar.

not lime, and IIRC lime does not spread by seed in ireland (until recently, possibly) as we don't get warm enough summers for them to produce viable seeds.

Alder leaves are essentially round, lime comes to a sharp point.

Look a bit further and even the bark is that of common alder.

have lime trees lining our street and pull these up regularly in the flower beds

are you on twitter? daniel buckley (dan_pathfinder) - an NPWS ranger - was looking for people who might have found lime seedlings. might be worth pinging him.

twitter is blocked in work so i can't verify if it's a specific type of lime he's looking for.
