Not me, not anyone else, criticized the fact that he's black, because that is not the point. But somehow you made it the point so go you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,274 ✭✭✭BruteStock

The types to clap like seals at a black elf would incite violence if a white man took a role made for a black actor.

The fact somebody is black isn't woke. Ticking a box for your diversity qouta is the aspect of it that's woke.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,569 ✭✭✭Cordell

Again, it's not a problem that he's black, the problem is that they put all the effort in getting woke and none in making a good show.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,521 ✭✭✭✭Potential-Monke

I don't think it's woke. Black, white, purple, don't care as long as it's a good character. But, it does pain me to see him holding the bow that way. It just doesn't make sense, unless he was aiming at something 50 feet away. For distance, he needs a far better grip than upsidedown 2 fingers. Check out Legolas, just as close, angle is not too different but again proper below, but the string hand is proper (albeit, Legolas puts the arrow between him and the bow but I believe it's quicker to go the outside of the bow). I don't even like LOTR... But that poster is stupid. Not woke. But stupid. I'll wait for reviews to decide if the show is woke.

    Bit confused by your comment.

How do you know they put all the money into getting woke and not into the show.

I thought it was not out yet is it?

I'm just inferring from that poster that they aren't making any honest effort to make it good, otherwise they would have hired someone to consult on archery and other medieval weapons. When you put up a poster like that that's beyond silly it's hard to expect them to make a good show. Well, maybe I'll be proven wrong, it happened before once or twice.

Ok, I see what you are saying, subject expert etc......where is the woke element though.

I see poor Mama Livia disappeared up his own hole rather than answer 😂

It's pretty dumb to expect realistic weapons usage from any modern film, no point giving about how a bow is held when lads will be bashing swords off each other like a pair of morris dancers.

I fully expect the archery to at least be realistic considering the Elf race were supposed to be the best at it. I fully understand it's fantasy, but I don't think it's wrong to expect some levels of realism within that fantasy, especially in ones which tend to lean on "realistic" fantasy over OTT fantasy (ie: anime). But I also understand that each person has their own levels within that, so literally each to their own. And I will totally judge the fight scenes and won't hold back. All that money, the fight scenes better be good.

I've advised him not to tell you as it will just give you another opportunity to complain.

Seems to be that alright. Can't see the problem with fantasy stuff at all, or how it's "woke".

It's when it's what I'd see as stunt casting it can jar alright. EG that Anne Boleyn TV thing where a Black actress was cast. Though way back we had John Wayne cast as Genghis Khan(truly a sight to behold 😂) but for different reasons of course. The Anne Boleyn casting was more about being "woke", but mostly my cynical side thinks it's far more about getting media attention. Attention gets bums on seats and cash in the till. It's show business. Look at how Hollywood will tweak casting, advertising, even edits for something like the huge Chinese market, or rewrite history so America gets the bigger role.

Though it can go the other way and cause a backlash as the all women Ghostbusters did. While the artists might have their own reasons for casting and writing the business side cares not a jot. If fascism sold big, there's be Triumph of the Will reboots on the go.

But yeah with fantasy non historical real people stuff play on IMHO. There have been rumblings about this sorta thing going way back. I can remember when Kevin Costner's Robin Hood flic caught static because he cast Morgan Freeman in a role and that's 30 odd years ago. That it wasn't historically accurate. And Errol Flynn flouncing about in lime green tights in the same role was?

Many worry about Artificial Intelligence. I worry far more about Organic Idiocy.

I'd like to see Will Ferrell cast as Shaft.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,859 ✭✭✭superflyninja

That is simply not true. Look at post 8804 on this very page. It contains the same quoted comment that I was replying to. In that the author suggests that people are nit picking the poster simply because the elf is black. And that is the woke part. The poster itself is not woke, it just shows a lack of effort from the show to get the act of firing a bow right. (Again unless Im very wrong and its common practice to use one finger to draw a bow)

    *le sigh*

Meanwhile, they're still fans of this make believe universe created by this 'terrible' human being...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,392 ✭✭✭dogbert27

I was going to post that this morning too.

Going through the article though it's clear that it's nothing to do with Quidditch being associated with Rowling stopping them from expanding but Warner Bros. have trade marked "Quidditch" which prevents the Quidditch organisations from expanding the sport or getting sponsorships and tv deals.

So they're really changing the name so they can try to make money out of it but using Rowling as an excuse to get media attention.

Show got changed to a different venue so Chapelle still got to do his gig and has two nights at Varsity.

But the First Avenue call to cancel the show hours beforehand is ridiculous

    https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-62276842

And this is why I don't trust a word the MSM says, this show looks a disaster .. check the official youtube channels of amazon prime (UK,US,India, ES, DE etc...) all getting ratio'd out of it - just checked US and UK 52k v 114k, 2.1k v 6.6k like/dislike respectively.

Also the BBC apparently only quote people who worked on Rings of Power and a lad that was paid to host an advert for it .. so yeah ..

It would be like writing an article on Top Gun Maverick and how it's such a failure in the box office and fans hate it and are disappointed with it - I'm sure you'd find some that would have hated it, but it wouldn't be even close to a picture of reality.

And of course, anyone who doesn't like this when it comes out - and speaks against it will just be smeared as some sort of "ist" or "ism" ..

    Pathetic.

So the great Nicolas Cage has been replaced by a female latino illegal immigrant.

    Wow just wow.

Im betting a few more boxes will be ticked.

Just seen The Gray Man, it's one of the best action film I've seen in years, and a perfect example of what can be done when getting woke is not the main objective. Critics: hold my beer

It's a good way lately to judge films, if the critics hate it and the audience love it - we have a great film there!!

    opposite is also true...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,689 ✭✭✭AllForIt

I thought this was some kind of joke when I came across it but apparently it's legit.

I love the way the camp goon is a big muscular guy and the gay teens are skinny fashion queens. Yeah like you don't ever see gay guys in the gym. Well done on defeating the stereotyping.
