up here there's no carbon tax and vat on kero is 5%.

In the south you have 10.4c carbon, 2c NORA and 13.5% vat

So circa €1070 in the south at present if you did not have carbon, nora and vat was at 5%

I suspect it will fall as refineries are pumping it out as fast as they can and more refineries are coming on stream.

Anyone think oil prices might drop a bit more, before I take the plunge!?

The carbon tax increase on a fill of oil is insignificant in comparison to the increases over the last few months. What are we talking €20 or so.

Whoever is charging £1000 is a rip off, £870 (€1020) is the cheapest I found with a quick search.

87ppl looks to be the going rate for larger quantities.

Cheapest pump price I can see is €1.15/l in Dandys.

The below is a general 'signature' and not part of any post:

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

Public transport user? If you're sick of phantom ghost services on the 'official' RTI sources, check bustimes.org for actual 'real' RTI, if it's on their map it actually exists.

Any idea on price trend? Seems on a downward trajectory at the moment. Likely to continue?

    I paid 1.35 for 500 litres

I can’t foresee it coming down much more as panic buying will start in another couple of weeks.

Just looking at the trends it would seem the slump in prices has been relatively stable over the last couple of weeks.

Media outlets are reporting that this trend may be getting ready to reverse.

If these reports are anything to go buy, it may suggest if your thinking of a fill now may be a good time.

Short sellers are closing out short positions against oil-focused exchange traded funds, while money managers have modestly increased their holdings of crude oil futures over the latest reporting week. These trades suggest that speculators, traders, and hedge fund managers may have started to believe that the 20% crash in oil prices since the middle of June could be over, and prices are set to go higher from here

Yep, around 127cpl seems to be the cheapest at the moment for 1000l, worth keeping a close eye on if you need a pre-winter fill.

    Why the panic buying?

What exactly is going to happen with oil in the next few weeks??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,261 ✭✭✭Gant21

Autumn is on the way, winter then. Government will be back and focus will be on energy, cost of living.

There was panic buying of bog roll in the covid pandemic, there was panic buying of oil at the start of the war. It’s a certainty that there will be panic buying in another month for the winter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,541 ✭✭✭mikeecho

I would disagree, for a number of reasons, and I'll only derail the thread.

Anyway, any chance of kero going under €1

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 47,483 ✭✭✭✭muffler

Substantial price drop across the border at the pumps. Its been €1.25 a litre for the last couple of months so I was pleasantly surprised earlier today when it had dropped to €1.03

Corroborate oil is still 1.19 . Where did you see 1.03?

It’s not really panic buying coming into winter heating season though!

seems to be stabilizing a bit now anyways

It seems to be stabilising somewhat alright. Still very pricey.

A good way to cut down on oil is to top up on the attic insulation, and pump the cavity walls. Had it done recently and the heat definitely isn't on as much in the winter. Makes a massive difference.

We have actually just moved into our new house which has Air2water so don’t even have oil anymore :D I’m still interested in the topic though

Electricity is my only heating bill now and it’s affected by oil prices too

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,285 ✭✭✭jackboy

I’m thinking of ordering a fill this weekend as I can’t see the price coming down much further and there is a good chance of a price spike in the next couple of months.

what do people think? Are the prices likely to continue falling?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,208 ✭✭✭jmreire

Panic buying, or indeed buying of any sort will depend on the amount of cash available.....and that amount is under attack all day every day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 715 ✭✭✭macvin

Ireland is miniscule in terms of the oil market, so things that happen here will have zero effect.

On the negative side that could see higher prices

    1 - dollar getting stronger

2 - Gas prices moving even higher casing a switch back to oil for electricity generation, this will lead to

3 - Refining margins. If there's a move back to electricity generation by oil, this will increase demand and refiner will take advantage

4 - Recession/slowdown doesn't happen, esp in China. This will see oil demand jump and oil prices jump

On the positive side that could see prices fall

    1 - Dollar getting weaker

2 - Gas demand drops and gas continues to flow from Russia

    3 - A ceasefire

4 - opec and other producing countries increasing supply

5 - refining margins dropping further - refineries are working flat out and there's the start of a glut in the far east.

The big question - of where prices will go. I don't think anyone can give and answer as its driven by so many different parameters at present. Personally i can't see it dropping below €1,000 per 1000L fill. If supplies become tight, it could go back to €1600. I'd be buying at anything under €1200 rather than trying to time it to perfection. But that's simply a layman's view

Why is Clare so much more expensive than anywhere else in the country. On that website Meath is 125 cpl for 500 litres and Clare is 138 cpl for the same. That's 630 versus 690 for 500 litres. And it's not to do with the distance from Dublin where I assume a lot of oil is delivered to Ireland.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 47,483 ✭✭✭✭muffler

Donegal would be further from Dublin than Clare and the cheapest price for 500 litres here is 640 rising to 690. However most suppliers are charging around 650. Can't see distance being a factor.

Keeping an eye on prices in Cork which haven't moved in 10 days or so. It usually is a case of one or two suppliers dropping the price first and the rest following suit within days. The difference between counties seems quite big in monetary terms at the moment but probably small in % terms give a fill is in the region of €1,300 these days.
