Bale acting like Tom Waits is kinda off putting

David O Russell has been a bit hit & miss for me, but that cast is stacked. The premise and story also sounds intriguing, so it has my attention.

Mike Myers popping up in a (semi?)dramatic role is distracting; hopefully he's only a minor character.

Huge cast for sure. Could be a pro or a con though.

I think it's cos his comedy style got a bit tedious, quite fast. Maybe he fancied himself as a bit of Peter Sellers, with all the costumes and wigs, but without the wit or nuance. Maybe between this and the likes of Bohemian Rhapsody Myers is trying to pivot into character acting in "serious" drama; though he has a Netflix show that popped up, and looks really awful.

What a disappointment. The silver linings playbook is one of my favorite films and I thought Joy was very good too but this is a mess unfortunately. It starts off well but I lost interest after a while and started to nod off. John David washington is very good as is Margot robbie, I swear she gets more beautiful as time goes by. But its Christian Bale who walks off with the acting honors, he is superb and very committed, its like he's acting in a completely different and better movie to everyone else. I'm not sure what the problem is really, a lot of the scenes fall very flat and it becomes unnecessarily convoluted. The cinematography is absolutely sublime though and the score is also pretty decent, but alas the rest of the film is just poor.

I liked it. the 3 seem to work together with Chris rock playing a minor role but very funny every time he came in. ending was a bit of an anti-climax a likeable film.

I enjoyed this, the cast is really good.

The narrative does falter a bit in the third act, it becomes a bit over-expository and drawn out - not enough to ruin the film, but it does suggest a perception that they needed to recap the story in case the audience wasn't paying attention.

Amsterdam doesn't even come close to the amazing American Hussle & Joy, had big hopes for David O's latest but although the cast is top notch, I found it meandering and a lot of going nowhere/lose ends with the script. Cristian Bale puts his all into his character but I think its just a bit to 'freeform' and wandering to hold up. I found watching some of the set pieces were there to find screen space for the three leads and forgot that they need to tell a compelling story/narrative. ( Bale, Robbie & JD Washington)

Its shot beautifully in a sort of noir/faded out browns and greys of the 1920's and it captures the era style really well.

Remi Malik and Ana Joy Taylor put in good performances and Andrea Riseborough *Beatrice* really lights up the screen.

Also Michael Shannon ..great in a limited funny left field role.. (He was outstandingly good in Boardwalk Empire)

Maybe I was expecting too much compared to David O'Russell's previous films found it trying to be too arty for its own good

    A generous 7/10
