The main thing that kept Johnson in power over the past 7 months is how terrible the other Tory candidates for the job were. Something the Tory MP's were very much aware of. I doubt there is too many of them sharing your optimism.

Greg Clark, arch anti brexiter coming back into cabinet according to Sky

Surprised Penny Mordaunt hasn't resigned , I'd wager that decision will prove to be un wise re her leadership ambitions.

"this is a very positive and upbeat day for the Conservatives"

    How??

Just how can anyone possibly see today as a "positive and upbeat day for the Conservatives"?

It is an absolute Car crash of staggering proportions , not just for Boris Johnson but for all of them.

The last few weeks have exposed (if "exposed" is the right term for something that's been obvious for years) how utterly morally bankrupt the Tory party is.

The ONLY thing that made them dump Boris was the belief that they couldn't win an Election with him in charge.

Not his lying , not his corruption , not his "unusual" relationship with a KGB operative , not his misogyny , not his Islamophobia , not his general utter disdain for the British public.

No , all of those things are perfectly fine for the Tory party , but woe betide the PM who threatens their ability to hold on to Power!!

    Upbeat day my arse...

Blair's Labour party implemented more Labour policy than any Govt in 40 years.

Even before him labour leaders like Callaghan and Wilson would be viewed as hard right by modern Labour activists.

There is no shame in winning and implementation of even some of your policies. It may not have the nobility of defiant opposition or they grandiose purity of a great plan to end all wrongs come the revolution but it can be surprisingly effective. Obviously Blair can't be mentioned in Labour anymore.

I wouldn't classify Sunak as squeaky clean...some dodgy dealings around COVID contracts/supports involving him and his wife and family

The ONLY thing that made them dump Boris was the belief that they couldn't win an Election with him in charge.

Why is that a bad thing? That's the very nature of politics.

The UK electorate want an actual Conservative Party.

Boris was the right man in 2019 but the UK electorate have spoken, through polling, and a new leader is needed for a fresh start.

Though I'm still a fan of Boris Johnson and think criticisms of him are blown out of all proportion, he was a conservative with a small c.

Now I'm hoping the button can be pressed for a large C conservative to take over and implement the kind of agenda that the British people voted for in overwhelming number in 2019 (which was also a complete rejection of Corbyn and socialism / left-wing politics).

So yes, this is definitely a positive day for the Conservatives. After all, MPs wanted him gone, and now he's gone.

How could they not be anything but pleased by the outcome?

How could they not be pleased that they have a new opportunity to restore confidence in the party and retain their seats in December 2024?

How could they not be pleased that they can now defeat Labour at the next election?

The Labour Party is delighted, ecstatic in fact. As I said earlier, this is nothing but a pyrrhic victory for them. The Conservatives are almost guaranteed to have the last laugh at the next GE.

"How could they not be anything but pleased by the outcome?"

Because they are all now bogged down by having backed him and defended him through everything else. This wasn't one big scandal that they had to force him out over, it was the culmination and weight of everything that has come before. The Tories ultimately backed him over all the previous scandals, and in particular Partygate. Even with a new leader, they are tainted with his stink. That stink came after the last election, which means using the election results as evidence of how many people back the Tories is completely erroneous. They voted for the Tories then, that doesn't mean they'd vote for them now.

You don't know what the UK electorate wants. If anything, the recent by-elections have shown the opposite of what you claim. Boris Johnson leaving might win back some of those voters, but there's no guarantee of that, particularly given how much of the Tory Party and potential replacement leaders backed Boris through the very scandals that lost them voters.

She's been on Question Time a few times and is on the Board of a local school near where I live. Deeply unintelligent person clearly there for loyalty to Brexit and Johnson.

A caretaker manager didn’t work for Manchester United, it’s not going to work for the conservatives.

He is still hoping to get out of this as PM isn't he?

I expect his resignation statement is being tweaked to be a 'commitment to resign' - possibly suggesting that there be a party VONC sometime in September.

I've seen her performances on TV and at committee hearings particularly the Channel 4 hearing, it was actually Hillarious viewing , hard to comprehend how she's got were she's got to let alone being on a school board 😏

One can only hope she's too busy rubber stamping culture war nonsense to interfere too much with that school. It's a very diverse area as well.

Boris Johnson set to deliver his resignation speech at 12.30.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,052 ✭✭✭✭Leroy42

So were conservatives wrong when they made him leader or wrong now? Why didn't they appoint a proper conservative instead of this small c one at the last internal election?

And how can you be confident that the same people that made such a mistake last time will be correct this time. Bearing in mind that the time before they elected TM as their leader!

Theresa May giving a speech at the Institute of Government, a tribute to the late , James Brokenshire, speaking about his legacy of decency, commitment to service inpublic life and to his former constituents.

Also of course subtlety putting the boot in

She seems pretty happy though, based on her smiles and demeanor. As I recall, Brokenshire was no great shakes but hey, don't speak ill of the dead.

"It's not unreasonable to expect those that write the laws of the land to follow them."

"Playing by the rules means not changing them on a whim to soothe short-term needs."

Yeah, she's got the needle going good.

James Brokenshire seems to have been held in high regard by all sides when secretary of state for Northern Ireland, but yes she's looking quite pleased

May got paid 100,000 pounds to deliver a speech the other week; not surprised she's on the lecture circuit.

The Guardian reported the other week that Johnson is set to make millions a year when he leaves No. 10.

Definitely agree on James Brokenshire he was liked by both sides so to speak...which is incredibly rare!
