100 years after independence it looks like we are going back: decision taken in UK decided our status in the EU. Courtesy of the Protocol. You know the great irony of the idiots in the Provos: they’ve forced the entire island back under UK domination.

Not going to happen, free movement of goods is pivotal to the European project

He talks more sense that the majority of cranks here.

If the UK actually breached the protocol to that extent, the trade reprisals from the EU would be crippling. We've been over this a million times. Whatever damage the UK can do to Ireland and the EU, we can do back to them 10 fold.

What were the Provos thinking when they went into the British Government and put forward this bill??

  • Registered Users Posts: 492 ✭✭wpd

but they wont because they still want to sell them audis and VWs and that is more important than any impact to Ireland for Brussels

Well if it's coming from the fella who says he had no bank account while minister for finance and won all his extra cash on the horses then it must be true.

If the UK want to go the whole hog with this (and nobody can stop them) the choice for Ireland is the Single market or a new Border between north and south

The new Border will be the option chosen if we're forced to make a choice between the two.

I cant believe we're in a position where the UK gets to decide our status, that's Brussels job 😡

How long until this Brexiteer myth about VW's and Prosecco dies a death? It was a lie 6 years ago when some British politicians came out with it and it remains a lie today. How anyone in this country ever came to believe it is beyond me.

Hello Brussels, this is Dublin here, dont even think of throwing us under the bus , if you do we are restoring full trade with Russia and getting cheap oil and gas, you dont back us up, then we own you no loyalty, we will look out for ourselves as you freeze this winter.

Thanks in advance for your support on this issue.

I would not hold your Breath. The EU will be putting up a hard border not the UK regardless of the UK's meddling. The UK does not have to put up Customs checks if they don't want to.

  • Registered Users Posts: 13 куриный шарик

If the EU does not support us fully on this issue, well then we should no longer play nice, block the EU in their fast tracking of new members into the EU, buy Russian oil and gas, go from the teachers pet of the EU to problem child over night, go all out, create a special economic zone for China, naturally we will do everything to ensure none of these Chinese goods avoid import taxes are they are shipped onward to the EU.

EU puts a border on the north they show us how they really regard Ireland, no more friendly paddy, we bleed them dry for every cent we can get, bend every rule and break the spirit of every law, hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, mother Ireland should remind them of how true this is.

Congratulations. That has to be one of the most stupid ideas ever uttered by an Irish person since the Brexit vote got announced. BJ and Putin would be proud of you.

As for the sensationalist Bertie statement. Of course that is not going to happen. The worst case is that there will be a hard border between the republic and the North. In which case, the UK would become a global pariah and would face massive trade problems with both the EU and the US.

BJ is going all in with this one. Ever since the term Brexit was coined, the only way it could actually work is if Ireland was to leave the EU with them (or, at the very least, for Ireland to suffer from Brexit, not the UK). With this move, he is hoping the brexit disaster on our shoulders, and some people here seem to be happy to shoulder that burden.

    Never going to happen.

The main parties here are not just supportive of the EU "project" but servile to it. Just look at the response to the Ukraine situation regardless of the impact it's starting to have here on already serious and worsening domestic issues.

Far from being a major player as our politicians like to suggest, we are merely a convenient pawn as the EU leadership try to ensure that Brexit is a failure so as to deter other member nations from leaving the club.

In the same way, Ireland was railroaded into a bailout during the financial crisis by the ECB because it suited EU interests.

We have far more in common with the UK than we do with the rest of the EU than some like to admit, and the effects of this EU-UK spat will hit us far more seriously, but that certainly doesn't matter to those in Brussels or their sycophants in Leinster House

Congratulations. You have just show how naïve you are.

USA up to now backing Ireland on this issue, but now that war with Russia is on the cards they wont go against the UK, the EU wont do anything either as the war drums beat in the distance, Ireland will be cast aside, and once they do, to hell with them , bleed the EU white ,take every penny we can get, they will give us money NOT to block the workings of the EU parliament, thats if we have politicians with balls and looking out for Ireland and not their Swiss bank account.

War with Russia on the cards, does EU get friendly with the UK and their army or does EU stay friendly with Ireland and no army? We all know the answer

  • Registered Users Posts: 13 куриный шарик

The best outcome of all this is the public see the current politicians in Ireland are not fit for purpose and hopefully new blood and new parties enter the political landscape. Politicians that put Ireland first , the current ones are happy with a slap on the back and an atta boy from the EU, its pathetic.

I dont think anyone believes this economy is not going to crash, the Russian threat be it real or perceived has changed the EU position on Brexit, the EU wont now be so hard on the UK , we will be sacrificed to ensure UK is happy fighting for EU countries if push comes to shove.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,635 ✭✭✭dotsman

How is war with Russia on the cards???

The US is pretty clear that it will not do a deal with UK until it is clear that the GFA is protected. Similarly, the EU are completely pi$$ed off with the UK over their Brexit dealings, so if the UK completely break the deal they signed less than 2 years ago, the EU is hardly going to completely reverse it's decision. Not only is it something they absolutely do not want, they also know that, if they did, it would be the end of the EU.

I don't know how you even get these ideas in your head.

Just out of interest who will make the UK a global Pariah. Seems lots of rhetoric and hoping. The Eu will be putting the boarder up no the Uk. I would wager the Uk has bought a crap tone of Global support due to there intervention in Ukraine. Real politics matter. There will be a fudge. Eu heavily involved in Ukraine mess. This out laying issue will be resolved. Like it or not the Uk is coming out smelling of Roses here. Germany has burnt tones of bridges on this issue too via in action in the Ukraine war.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,273 ✭✭✭xxxxxxl

Biden can come out and demand the EU pays its fair share in Nato in regards to support in relation to the UK. Win Win for him. If that happens we will be on the hook too and membership of Nato or the EU army may be on the table. The real world is fickle.

Just out of interest who will make the UK a global Pariah. Seems lots of rhetoric and hoping.

Spending 4 years trying to negotiate an unworkable deal, constantly changing their minds and ultimately signing what they considered was a great deal, only to completely break the deal after 2 years would see no country deal with them, unless absolutely desperate, or completely to their advantage. it has nothing to do with rhetoric or hoping. What's the point in doing any deals with a country that breaks the deal within 2 years (especially for no other reason than they always intended to break the deal)???

The Eu will be putting the boarder up no the UK

No it won't. It will be the UK. TEH EU didn't vote for Brexit, nor did it do any deal with the UK that would result in a border. I really don't know why people trot this line out.

I would wager the Uk has bought a crap tone of Global support due to there intervention in Ukraine

But the UK has not intervened in Ukraine??? Nobody has, nor will anybody. No country will intervene in a war with a nuclear state. The UK, along with most western countries has offered support to the Ukraine, and placed sanctions on Russia, but that is as far as it can go.

Real politics matter. There will be a fudge. Eu heavily involved in Ukraine mess. This out laying issue will be resolved. Like it or not the Uk is coming out smelling of Roses here. Germany has burnt tones of bridges on this issue too via in action in the Ukraine war.

I'm not sure what any of this even means. But I can assure you, nobody in the EU/US regards the UK as "smelling of roses".

Your first point is irrelevant. UK does what UK does. I admire the idea they will be sanctioned to the extent as Russia.

Second point the UK does not have to put up any border if they don't want to. The EU on the other hand has to protects it's single market. that = a customs border.

Third point the UK has sent weapons intelligence army training from day one IIRC. "The UK-led programme would train and drill the Armed Forces of Ukraine using battle-proven British Army expertise, allowing them to accelerate their deployment, rebuild their forces, and scale-up their resistance as they continue to defend their nation’s sovereignty against Russian invaders. International partners would be invited to host the programme, if the offer is accepted by Ukraine.

The previous Operation Orbital saw the UK train more than 22,000 Ukrainian personnel from 2015 until the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The new programme would train forces outside of the country."

So the Uk was in Country.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,635 ✭✭✭dotsman

I have no idea how you interpreted my post as suggesting the UK would be sanctioned?

As for training, as my post said, the UK, along with many western countries are supporting Ukraine. But they have not, nor will not intervene. Nor will any country.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,273 ✭✭✭xxxxxxl

They already did being in country to train the Ukrainians. Or are you saying they did not train Ukrainians on Ukrainian soil ? Not a good hill to die on.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,635 ✭✭✭dotsman

Training is not intervention. Throughout the second half of the 20th century, both the soviets and western countries engaged in countless wars. But the rule was simple - once one side is in, the other does not intervene. They support via financial aid and military aid (supplying weapons, training and advise), but never intervene. Intervention equals nuclear holocaust. Everyone knows it, and every ones knows the rules. After a brief respite in the 90's, in the Cold War pt2, Russia has not intervened in any conflict where western troops are fighting, and western countries have not intervened in countries where Russia is fighting. And that will continue throughout the Ukraine war and in the wars that come after.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,273 ✭✭✭xxxxxxl

I agree. but, the Russians have been selling off high value assets under the commanders noses and even commanders. Their Nuclear arsenal could be in the same shape. leave one live sell off all the rest. like the tanks pick apart the ones in the back work forward. The leader could have been shown a paper machine item see we have loads. They can't even keep their ATM's going at this point.

As for training the Uk probably Trained the Ukrainians the best value and use of weaponry. Or they would have fallen fast. Also how to bleed an army dry with holding action and strategic retreats. Bleed them again rinse repeat. I'm all for bashing the UK but not on this issue.

The Russian threat is real in the sense that they invaded another nation. War with Russia is not on the cards and they're struggling to even sustain their war in Ukraine. In terms of your idea of Ireland becoming bedfellows with totalitarian leaders, pretty confident the Irish public won't back that.
