Only Djokovic and Shapovalov left from last year's quarterfinals, of course a few were absent for various reasons, injury, Covid & not allowed enter, but, would have expected Hurkacz and FAA to get through. Nadal's inclusion this year will make it a bit more interesting

This is one looooong opening game of second set in William match....feels big!

A bit of an upset alright, but I saw the Cressy match against Draper at Eastbourne tricky and in great form, nice to see someone who serves and volleys getting through!

    Williams breaks...on 7th break point!

Yeah he was 11/4 i think so it was not a huge upset but thought he would lose in 4 or 5. Serena looks like she might squeeze this but cant see her getting to week 2!

Williams up a break in third set...that feels like that.

Why did she come back? She's in no shape to be playing. Great power in the back hand when she has time to set it up but she can't run.

Dislikeable too in the way she pouts and flounces about the court and plays to the crowd. She has long form like this against the younger players. Hope she gets thoroughly beaten in next round if she survives this.

Full dramatic performance from Serena. She obviously thinks there's an Oscar in this......

You would have to think Swiatek would beat Serena into the next century if they met up.

    Is that a shaving nick?

    She's gassed in any case.

Tan's second serves are a bit of a pop-up-hit-me-away type thing.

Neither of these players are going to be threatening for the title.

The standard in this match is errrr variable but it is definitely gripping!

On a side note Jo konta I like as a commentator

I don't think it would take Swiatek to do that, based on her performance so far.

A solid top 10 player should be able to beat her really.

The BBC bias towards Williams is a hard listen

Wow...what a terrific comeback from Tan in the 5th set! Well deserved. Sad if it is last single match Serena Williams plays.

Still, some performance at 40 years old having not played in a year. Gotta feel.of she had more games under her belt she would have won.

It was funny watching the ones sitting behind the Tan family. Faces of stone everytime Tan's family celebrated a winning point. They hadn't the grace to acknowledge one good shot.

Delighted Serena is out, couldn't stick much more of her hysterics and all the fawning over her.

4-0 up in the tie-break and then she's out.

Serena should have seen it into the next round really and would add more interest to the tournament that her opponent.

Tan will be not long for this tournament.

Could never root for Serena again after the US Open 2018 debacle, but in some senses it would be something of a shame if her last match at Wimbledon was a first round loss. She must've been prepared for the eventuality though, given she hadn't played a tournament in almost a year. Oh well. I imagine she'll play the US Open but who knows beyond that.

Good for womens tennis shes out , fair play to Tan for knocking her out , she should give a few tips to young male players.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,641 ✭✭✭Xander10

She was playing a nobody. A win today was only going to delay the inevitable.

BBC commentator wraps up with "I am going to bed tonight dreaming of having a heart like Serena Williams"

    No well done Harmony Tan.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 275 ✭✭squigglestrebor

Absolutely! Not much of a statement though , it would be insane if it wasnt the case, shes world number 1 and has won 36 matchs in a row. Serena is 40 years of age and hadnt played in a year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,641 ✭✭✭Xander10

She celebrated the break before the tie break as if she had won the final. Focus and stamina seem to drain after it.

BBC are absolutely awful...Andrew Castle and his kind would sicken you....

Delighted to see Tan get the win (as is everyone else on here it seems!)

Was that the one where she threatened to have the umpire shot?
