Well with all due respect funnily enough we had quite a different response to Syrians and more of them, fleeing a longer and more bloody war that involved and devastated far more of that country(even had the twat putin involved too). We vetted and let in 3000, half under 18, over a decade. And I don't recall Syrians getting instant SW and medical cards upon arrival, never mind throwing out a century of quarantine for animals, or conversion of driving licences and members of the Dail flinging open their doors to house any, and then not in the case of McEntee.

Now we throw open the doors and public purse to over ten times that number of Ukrainians with apparently no cap in sight in three months, give them the highest financial supports of any nation giving shelter(EG in Germany which has done more than her fair share they receive in a month just over what we're handing out per week) with zero vetting coming from a country that is one of the most corrupt going and a centre for human trafficking. It's quite amazing to observe how the bloody baptism of putin's invasion has magically washed away so many sins and given us amnesia with it. Hell, I've seen posters on this very site who before would have been in the vanguard of moral panic about the "rise of the far right" cheering on the Azov group. Even outlets like the BBC and The Guardian in Britain who've been lathering themselves up over the same far right threat(and government corruption et al) in Ukraine suddenly and remarkably suffering from the same amnesia.

Never mind all that, but the planning involved doesn't deserve the name. The words brewery, organise, piss up, couldn't spring readily to mind. And as we've seen in the Dail this week, even daring to ask obvious questions about this and how it's been (dis)organised gets short shrift and accusations of near heresy to bring them up.

So yes if we do want to start comparing and contrasting and leave the holier than thou bordering on smugness in some cloying emotionals at the door where they bloody well belong there are a few knotty questions in the air about this whole affair and the wrong answers will directly affect Ukrainians, never mind Irish people.

Hang on until I find a picture of the Dublin bombings to show that the South was also a war zone.......... 🙄. I'm amazed the dubs didn't pack their bags and head for the, oh I dunno...... Connacht would make perfect sense! But no, pack the bags kids, we're heading to Greece, for the weather and benefits. Good lord!!

What you have described above is absolutely spot on.

You're gonna have to do better than that. Your antics don't wash with me

    Reality?

Why are you parroting Kremlin propaganda?

This has been explained to you personally several times, millions of Syrians didn't pour into the EU in a matter of days.

Also I don't know what moral high ground you are going for here, you didn't want them near us either. Did you?

In essence and because of the wording of this Bizzare EU directive a Ukrainian Citizen and technically a non citizen who can prove (impossible) they live in Ukraine has to be taken in.

Literally if a Ukrainian citizen resides in Timbuktu, they can up sticks and come to Ireland or indeed any EU country not opting out of this nonsensical EU directive.

It's utterly bizzare and astonishing not a single EU member questioning this or other aspects of the EU directive.

Russia is a totalitarian state run by criminals lining their pockets at the expense of their own people and one that is closer to actual fascism than most out there. And yes Russians who support this war, which is a fair percentage, are IMHO suffering from misplaced patrioticism or are thundering dicks. You'll get no disagreement from me there. Their propaganda is for the most part monumentally obvious and stupid, so they must know their domestic audience, or at least it doesn't reflect well on them.

However though Ukraine is in the right here we're also exposed to Ukrainian propaganda and just as many are just as quick to buy into their side. That's quite evident "on here" too. The vast majority parrot the Ukrainian side with little if any critical thinking about it.

Yes, and luckily Putin's a "decent oul skin" so being in range of missiles is just a hypothetical threat.

Also, the front lines are cast-iron guaranteed not to move, ever, so no worries on that score either.

Lastly, sure there's no impact on the economy and basic services in the areas not yet razed to the ground.

Somalia people letting on to be Ukrainians surely some one is going to flag that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,199 ✭✭✭✭Dempo1

And utterly true . I've read over Directive and essentially all they are required to say is they can't return to Ukraine. There is no questions or even curiosity as to say, why some are arriving from America as an example.

its not clear how a non Ukrainian citizen proves they live in or even have a connection to Ukraine but there's anecdotal evidence a large number of non Ukrainian citizens were permitted entry as anyone residing/working in Ukranian on and after the date applicable to the EU directive was covered.

How in heavens name these people could verify a connection to Ukraine is and remains a mystery let's not forget passports aren't even required.

You're confusing me with someone else regarding the "several times" part. In 2015 alone two million poured into Europe. Never mind the hundreds of thousands of "refugees" coming from sub Saharan Africa. Then again they're opportunists as they're pushing again as yesterday's attempt to break into Spain's territory in North Africa shows.

And unlike some I'm not striving for any perceived moral high ground. 3000 - 5000 Syrians was about right for me. 10,000 vetted Ukrainians would have been fine too. Over 30,000, not capped, not vetted, three billion so far being allocated to cover that, while we're looking down the barrel of recession, the decades long intractable shortages in our health service and the worst housing crisis in the history of the Irish state? Eh...no. It's beyond imbecilic by any sensible metric. But sense seems to have taken a night out on the sauce. The hangove is going to be fun though.

Possibly sooner than that, if the current flow continues September will be fun. There will be a lot of pissed off parents looking for college accommodation. What about primary and secondary school places? how will an increase in pupils affect places? Will all these extra school children speak English?

You wouldn’t fly to America from Ukraine to fly to Ireland.

And yet Kiev, even according to BBC reports, is much like normal, traffic jams and all, with 2/3 of the population having returned. Not a war zone.

that couple who came here from New York and were given a retail unit. Because too scared to go home? Utterly taking the p out of us

It's outrageous stuff altogether when you consider what is on offer! Absolutely outrageous.

I'm curious how you think this , I presume the lady featured recently with the business in Dublin and from Odessa didn't swim to America, there was also a coluful chap who featured TWICE on the live line program who arrived here from Miami of all places.

He was on giving out about being moved out of a hotel in Dublin, actually turned down a free apartment in Youghal, God bless his cotton socks and you'll especially love this bit......

He actually also complained about what he was getting in SW , one presumes he didn't swim to Miami either 😏

Assuming an average family unit of two arriving that is up to 19,000 rooves needed already.

Where are they all going to stay? Will they be kept in hotels almost permanently until new homes are built?

If tonight, I decided to burn my savings and house to the ground, destroy all my belongings and turn up to social welfare in the morning as an Irish citizen, how long do you think it would take for me to get the same access to the benefits that the Ukrainian refugees are getting? I'd be asked a million and one questions and be given a stack of forms seeking masses of personal information.

Next...... I'm Ukrainian, I have nó passport. No problem uri, we'll look after you. Oh paddy..... You will need to fill that form again, as you got the wrong stamp on it!! That'll hold you up at least 6 weeks. 🤔

It's impossible to know , so many mixed messages from government and Red Cross. Allegedly 3,000 local authority buildings being renovated (absolute nonsense) and government hoping (wishful thinking) to house 6k by August, if it wasn't so serious, it would be funny. There's also planning applications in for temporary housing, Laytown residents and indeed local politicians up in arms at the moment , 570 proposed units 😳

My prediction, when the little amount of tourists coming stop around September, More Hotels will be blocked booked , there literally is no more room at the Virtue Signalling Inn

I think that after a few months in cold, draughty old buildings, that were abandoned for a reason, the refugees who have somewhere in Ukraine to return to, will.

Leo didn’t look too worried today strolling in the parade.

This is what I was talking about the other day.

Mattie McGrath voicing concerns but the FF lad said we’re getting consultants and engineers and said Mattie is happy to leave kids on boats to die.

Mattie saying there has to be limits and Irish people are getting pushed down the q for services.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,395 ✭✭✭mattser

And fair play to him. He had good reason to be there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,261 ✭✭✭Gant21

For sure agree, if only he takes his position seriously now in the dail and deal with the car crash.

Yep, Leo is never one to pass up an opportunity for a photo op, soundbite, or more twitter likes!

Micheal is out playing the Good European for Brussels, Leo is always about Leo, and Ryan.. well, the less said there the better!

But who is actually representing the average Irish citizen's interests?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,261 ✭✭✭Gant21

Mattie McGrath got roasted for his comments but he is the only one talking some sense.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,199 ✭✭✭✭Dempo1

It was an outrageous accusation and not the first from a FF TD. Mattie mc grath might be out there at the best of times but my god there wasn't a single thing he said I could objectively disagree with . Paul McAuliffe is dislikeable at the best of times but my god he's so out of touch , it's extraordinary. He confirmed one suspicion I've had from the outset, get as many in to fill job vacancies, that hasn't quite worked out nor will it .

Mattie Mc Grath, like Carol Nolan asked perfectly reasonable questions and it's absolutely true Government won't tolerate debate and instantly throw the racist grenade into the mix , its disgusting, un democratic and outrageous. This mess is imploding before their very eyes and their solution 🤔 keep em coming 😡
