Michael Martin was on the News last night being interviewed about fast tracking Ukraine membership of EU. Its hard to keep up with him these days , he was in Norway earlier this week , was it something to do with NATO membership?

Anyway last night he was poncing around like a prize peacock in front of the cameras with that smug idiot Thomas Byrne grinning like an eejit for no apparent reason. Micheal seems positively "high" at being on the European stage, he is absolutely loving the chats with Zelensky, Ursula Van der Leyden etc. It seems to be his "raison d"etre" at the moment, anything European or Ukrainian, anything to be relevant, top of the class, the pleaser, the "yes man", the best little country in Europe. Is this something to do with an Irish inferior complex or insecurity.... this need to be liked by everyone?

He is literally putting the 2 fingers up to Irish people at home, laughing his way to some job in the EU, saying we are all great Europeans, "welcome, welcome, welcome.... Shure begorrah aren't we Irish, don't we do welcomes better than any other nation?" Meanwhile he's saying a big" FCUK YOU" to everyone back home, struggling to get to the end of the week. I used to like him as a person, even though I didn't vote for him, but he is the most spineless, weak people pleaser with no leadership qualities at all.

*** on another completely separate note why are diesel prices increasing EVERY single day......2.14 yesterday, 2.17 today?? Soon I won't be able to afford to drive to work**

I think the point is being missed about the story in the independent, Ironically the article quite subtlety points out a number of circumstances that they clearly knew would raise some questions.

It's fair to say most know all about the EU directive and what applies. It's quite possibly the worst constructed piece of instruction / directive ever produced by EU leadership and , whilst open to correction, I'm not even aware it was voted on .

That aside the Directive is so ambiguous and poorly put together It's no wonder it's contents not only confuse people but anger them .it's correct the lady in question is covered under "Unable not Return to Ukraine " definition and bizzarely the Directive in essence permits any Ukrainian citizen in the world regardless if they intended to return to Ukraine or not , to drop everything and come to Ireland and essentially get limitless supports. That is utterly preposterous , whatever side of the debate folks are on.

I commend the lady for setting up a business, I've no issue with that but have ligitmate questions how a Ukrainian Citizen can come to Ireland from literally anywhere in the world without any questions or verifications of circumstances taking place.

Desperate people fleeing a war zone, these people were certainly not .

The fast tracking of EU candidate status for Ukraine is essentially virtue signalling and meaningless, it was predicted after all the posturing by various EU , world leaders and embarrassingly celebrities visiting Zelenskyy. Georgia over looked in order to placate Zelenskyy essentially.

When the Bills start coming in I predict utter silence from the EU and when proper scrutiny of corruption, appalling lack of governance (most of which EU leadership is fully aware of) Ukraine will never get full EU membership, in essence games being played to goad that lunatic Putin .

If Ukraine is safe enough for Hollywood celebrities to be waltzing about I'm sure its fine for it's citizens

I've actually lost count of the amount of dignitaries, EU leaders, Celebrities who seem to be able to hop on Trains and make their way to see Zelenskyy in Kyiv. Some of these leaders have extraordinary protection measures in place . Whilst it's abundantly clear there's no fighting or military action in 80% of Ukraine, missile attacks are of course a possibility but Putin has essentially being focusing on his objectives, taking over the South and East of Ukraine and for months .

Ah well, everyone is entitled to an opinion. Just as well you don't have to deal with me in person, you may have a heart attack ya poor aul crature😂. I wouldn't blame the education system for the likes of me though. I'm highly educated, only thing missing is a PhD. 😉

But hey, I'm a monster, no compassion etc etc etc. Keep them coming and coming and coming. If you think that this situation is "compassion", I would strongly urge you to wake up. This is a shake down. People like me had no problem taking in a certain number and giving them all that they are getting now. But this is going much too far. I do lack compassion for the ones not fleeing life or death situations not for the ones that are.

And I feel sorry for people like you, who dont seem to understand or have the foresight enough to see the potential problems that this influx will cause. Wake up!

I also just noted that you put my typo in inverted commas, 😂. Thanks for pointing that out 👏👍👌.

Ah yes, because an average Ukrainian has millions of dollars to spend on security detail.

Exactly. We should help those directly effected in the war zones. We have a moral imperative to. What we don’t have to do is take in people from places completely unaffected. This has been my position from the start and it couldn’t be clearer. And it’s up to the Ukrainian authorities themselves to help us with that - our resources are finite too and if you want us to help, help us aid those that genuinely need it.

The business lady you were having a conniption over is from Odessa. 😕

Yea, the same one who was so “worried” she left her elderly grandmother right there.

“Business” lady- she’s running a fcukin beauty bar that’s been massively subsidized

Nope, she left no one behind.

So you don't like people on low wages or businesses you deem not worthy.

Not a great look to be fair.

Oh I forgot. She already safe from war in the states and as they don’t let every tom dick and Harry in to stay she got the map of soft touches out and struck lucky.

I don’t fancy importing lots of low wage people that can’t support themselves- I’m old fashioned that way, I don’t think it’s the job of unrelated taxpayers to support complete strangers.

Last population census suggests a population of 119 , my Irish knowledge zero , 14.5 km off the coast of Ireland, unless they are planning on taking up sheep farming or Arts and Crafts , what else is on the Isand , Fisheries 🤔 how did they end up in such a remote location 😳 actually sounds idyllic but I'd not fancy being there in winter.

Compassion is the nicest emotion to be blinded by, but it still leaves one blind. High minded emotions are all very well, and of course warm the cockles of our own hearts first, especially if one plays to the gallery, but they're utterly useless if not backed by critical thinking and a cogent plan. In fact they ultimately make things worse.

This Ukrainian refugee situation a good example and a very good example of our authorities inablity to organise a piss up in a brewery. Again. Pledge no caps, come all ye huddled masses and we'll give you the highest SW benefits in the EU, "free" medical cards for a health service not fit for purpose for the people already living here and after the biggest hit in a generation to same health services, even driving licences and with no checks at all and promise you accomodation we quite simply don't have and certainly and quite evidently can't organise. Even when in the early stages when the emotionals were running strong and thousands were pledging rooms and houses. Including minister McEntee, until well, never you mind. Oh and while we're all looking down the barrel of inflation and recession. You couldn't make this level of dumb up. But our government managed it and our media are encouraging it with understandable feelgood stories of the small successes, while ignoring said wider dumb. And as we saw in the Dail anybody who dares question this runaway train with bockety wheels on a wobbly track is pilloried for it. How dare someone suggest the bloody obvious.

But so long as you use feeling ashamed and compassionate that's fine. It doesn't make for much of an actual plan now, does it?

It'll be grand, it always is. Sure there's going to be some bumps along the way, but we'll get through it.

i first thought, we’ll all a bit suss, then I thought well ‘job creation’ not all bad but…

Interesting too, that 100% of the employees she has hired are Ukrainian.. :)

interesting to hear also what the other traders in that arcade think, traders who have paid rates no doubt as required… seeing a new tenant arriving, no connections to the area, city or country but who get whopping big freebies.

Bumps along the way 🤔 curious way at looking at was has been an unmitigated shambles from the outset , each to their own I guess 🙄

And a perfect example of what I describe. No plan, no intelligent argument. But we'll get through it.. We have a crisis in our health services going on for over a generation with no end in sight. But we'll get through it. We have the worst housing problem for a generation. But we'll get through it.

A once in a lifetime to sleep in a sports hall, in the company of scores of others, on camp beds. Only to be moved to “renovated” convents sharing bathroom and toilet facilities, sleeping 2, 3 and 4 to a room. Great country altogether. Imagine Maggie C or Erica F living like that? The draughty windows alone would have them tearing their extensions out!

Nah we don't, they may tell us we do but we really don't. (maybe the select few do)

If we did we wouldn't hear the same shite and struggles year on year for the past decades. It's just ignored by the I'm alright crowd and the rest have to get on with it.

It's pretty sad to be honest.

i think this particular issue has the most vocal ‘I’m alright’ crowd piling in that I’ve ever seen

208 euro a week plus mickey money for every child, maybe even a single parents allowance on top. That's a lot of reason to want to come here.

Now, they are not getting anything our great leaders haven't offered on a platter. But cramped living conditions would be a small price to pay for more money than most would every get back home.

Ahh well, you have to consider the general topic. We were prepped when it came to Ukraine. All of Western Europe, including Ireland, whitewashed all of Ukraines negatives away, so that they could be elevated to Sainthood. As such, anything that is done, regardless of how bad it will be for Irish people, is virtuous. You see it whenever any mention of negative behaviour by Ukrainians, or any negatives about their government. The objections are dismissed with empty platitudes, and there's no real interest in dealing with the costs involved.

It's the ultimate virtue signalling topic to be seen in a decade. God knows, when they'll have something better to show how generous they are with other peoples lives. Naturally, it's always better when foreigners are placed ahead of Irish people. Such a rush.

We were committed to helping Ukraine. I accept that. But from day one, this has been managed in a shoddy, headless chicken approach, with little in the way of long-term planning or any desire to reduce the overall costs to the taxpayer. It's utterly ridiculous.. but hey, at least we get to be seen as being generous. That's something isn't it?

We've seen a gradual decline of services and infrastructure in this nation for decades now, even during the boom periods, but nah.. it'll be grand. Somehow when our economy buckles from international market forces, or the ever increasing expenditure added, we'll manage what we could never do when we were loaded. Sometimes I wonder what goes through these peoples heads. I've been a stoner.. and I was never that delusional, whether it was the herb, or LSD.

Jaysus, I think I have semi after reading all that erotic doom fiction.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,200 ✭✭✭✭Dempo1

Hmmmm, Erotic Doom fiction, curious but yet predictable response to differing opinions, especially objective and coherent differing opinions, but each to their own I guess.

Always fascinated me how those with a one dimensional view on a topic can't see beyond that view even when there's not just anecdotal evidence but more than enough accurate reporting on the a Topic to at the very least justify objective understanding of what is going on.

People can ignore outlandish stories and claims or indeed choose to comment if they so wish but its by now abundantly clear those with this one dimensional view on this Topic, refuse to actually engage coherently and instead behave as badly, if not worse than those who perhaps are over Zealous in their opinions and view's, Sad really.

Or Poland, America, Turkey, etc. There's a few that just popped in on their way home from non Ukraine locations because they love Ireland so much.
