Lads all I’m trying to figure out is this.

Why are you so annoyed at Ukrainians receiving help from fleeing a war at the moment when you don’t have the balls to do the same when Nigerians are receiving the same benefits and help for 20 years and they don’t have war going on????

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,339 ✭✭✭Jinglejangle69

Set up a thread like this one so but about Nigerians.

    Go on, do it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 368 ✭✭keoclassic

Sure, open the thread yourself and start the discussion....... I'm sure you will have plenty of contributions...... Or do you think that someone will label you a racist?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,339 ✭✭✭Jinglejangle69

Do you have anger for just the Ukrainians or the Africans too?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 368 ✭✭keoclassic

Why would I? If they are here, they are here? If someone sets up a thread and says that Nigerian welfare seekers should be sent back home, I'd agree with it. That's not racist, that's an Irish person not wanting a leech on the systems that are currently in place and are contributed to by my taxes.

I believe that any person who arrives into the Irish state with the sole intention of extracting welfare and benefits from said Irish state should not remain here. No matter what nationality they are. You keep going on about Nigerians. What do you think of Nigerian welfare seekers living in Ireland? My anger also doesn't really perpetrate to the nationality of the welfare seeker, my real anger over all of this is towards a government which has enacted policy's to allow this to happen!!

This thread is about Ukrainian refugees in Ireland. Please stick to the topic, which is nothing to do with Nigerians

Are you afraid of been labelled a racist.???

Nope. The word and the way it is used on boards, has ensured that it's lost all power or impact on me. Anyway, the facts aren't racist. Nigerians do feature highly in unemployment (although EU citizens feature far more in unemployment), and also crime statistics. It is worth talking about, although, considering the numbers of Nigerians in Ireland compared to other ethnic/national groups, it makes far more sense to discuss the macro issues, of immigration, the lack of integration/assimilation, etc.

In fact, come over to the Multiculturalism in Ireland thread, and we'll be happy to tear your logic to pieces.. but then, I doubt you're going to actually commit to arguing anything and instead are seeking to voice some kind of outrage of your own on this thread.

Edit: Sorry Beasty, didn't see the notice until after I posted. I'll snip the post short.

If they turn down perfectly good accommodation then they clearly don’t need help that badly. Like , say, someone coming from a warzone might….

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,536 ✭✭✭✭zell12

    1,000 refugees arriving weekly

The new protocol means that when the first accommodation offer is refused, the applicant will go to the back of the accommodation list.

After a second offer is made, the applicant will be notified that the State has met the requirements of the EU’s temporary protection directive and no further offers will be made if the second offer is not taken up within seven days.

Refugees, provided they are not working, are entitled to rent supplement to help them seek private accommodation. The Housing Assistance Payment, available to workers on a low income, is not, as of now, available to Ukrainians.

I missed last evenings rather appalling attempts to turn this thread upside down bringing accusations of racism into the discussion and one poster who's obsession with all things Social welfare is well known across the site trying to inject their Bile into this Thread , thankfully both were called out.

There's been many heated discussions, Debate, arguments, admittedly some wild assertions and yes Anger but I believe in the Main not directed at Refugees but the entire approach to this crisis and to be honest what people genuinely believe is blatant Double standards.

As I said previously even the most Ardent opponents showed understanding and patience at the start but gradually cracks began to surface, lack of infrastructure, Housing, Pledges not being acted upon ,chronic shortages of accomodation and the obvious lack of controls and verifications in place.

I'm not a proponent of whataboutry but my god at a basic level and looking at what people have to go through in normal times to get access to supports, housing, Education, Health, even switching bank accounts and looking on at supports and rule bending going on to suit one cohort, is it not any wonder why Social cohesion is breaking down. I know people are angry and it's damn well nothing to do with racism and to suggest otherwise is despicable, it's actually the total opposite, its about fairness, equality and dare I say , common sense. It's also about practicalities and realism. Government had option's, could have offered practical and financial supports but instead went head first into virtue signalling mode, opened the borders had absolutely no plan in place, relied on the generosity of the Irish people and an NGO clearly out of its depth and made an already intolerable situation at home even worse , needlessly and still, 5 months in , not a clue, all the while and seemingly oblivious, overseeing a breakdown in Social cohesion, I'm not even sure it's possible to make this up.

There's been extraordinary gestures of Generosity shown, even more extraordinary patience shown but like it or not we're now in an even bigger crisis than we were last March and the sad Irony, its actually Refugees that will always be the first to suffer and already we can see Government scrambling to catch up, it sadly may be too late. I don't pretend not to be Angry, it's evident on both sides of the debate, I don't pretend to have the answers or solutions, I've been wrong, I've apologised , I've be correct and been chastised , yes I've gone to far, been reigned in but like many who've contributed, I've tried to be objective and have commended many who's generosity has been extraordinary, I may not agree with them when they criticise others opinions but I do respect their points of view. Boards is in the main a fantastic platform for discussion, I think most of us guilty of silliness at times.

    The debate will continue thankfully

That's my morning rant over have a great day all 😏

Another terrific contribution from ‘Boggles’. I’ve also been to the Ukraine and there issues with alcoholism there, on a scale unimaginable here

Tell me what scale did you use and how exactly did you measure and draw your conclusion?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 42,958 ✭✭✭✭Boggles

I mentioned it because I have seen a group of Ukrainians drink their way through a bag of cans on an Irish train before lunch hour recently. They had to be asked to put out their cigarettes too

Did they store their cans in a brand new pram full of ice?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,200 ✭✭✭✭Dempo1

Good man / women Boggles always the first in with negativity, your certainly consistent, I don't need to copy and paste your many outlandish claims in my responses , there all there for everyone to see. As I and many others have said , you see what you want to see, need to be constantly corrected , it's tiresome at times , but as I've freely admitted I can be cutting, have been wrong, indeed have been correct and not afraid to apologise, Seemingly you think your always right and can do no wrong , Gosh it must be challenging to be perched on the sanctimonious pedestal of yours 24 hours at day.

Good morning, no doubt I'll be calling out more nonsense later 😏

A yes and they he/she is , without even mentioning names the illustrious anti everything knew who I was referring too , even on Sunday having to be called out for trying to stir things elsewhere. What's actually extraordinary is you keep coming back for more, nothing positive to say, actually nothing to say at all apart from one line Jibes across the site, of course that's your entitlement but of course I and many others will continue to call you out .

Anything to say about the actual Topic 🤔

    But of course not ......

I read in some newspaper yesterday about a Ukranian refugee woman whose apartment in Dublin was broken into last week and her savings, since she came to Ireland, of over €1,000 was stolen, she said that the savings came from Social Welfare payments & childrens allowances etc. The average monhly salary in Ukaraine is €450.00 We are spending €3 BILLION on Ukrainian refugees ...Italy who have taken in twice the no. we have are spending €470 Million !! And Ireland is the most indepted country in the western world - over €320 Billion and rising. Somebody has to shout STOP (to mis-quote John Healy)

Can’t stand not to post. My daughter is working part time and doing her leaving cert this year. She applied for student grant and got letter she has to pay half fees. Thanks god only half. I don’t understand why country is investing 208 per week + 400 who s housing them for refugees. Nothing for perspective students who ll be paying taxes and build the country in the future. But everything was given to persons « in question « ?? Nothing for young people, students, no housing, no medical card. Looking at current events in the country, it’s such a disgusting inequality

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 368 ✭✭keoclassic

Absolutely, its the inequality that's creating the disparity of views. This government really has to go, not at the next election, but now!! They are destroying the future of our kids by lack of investment in quality projects and infrastructure. It's a pity that the refugees are now being seen as a part of this problem.m but the costs associated with them are enormous! It's scandalous.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,487 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

    Difference being they are taxpayers.

they are not fleeing a war and they will be long term in that accommodation. Their home.

asylum is vastly different from someone on a public housing list. Asylum seekers need be housed as opposed to be accommodated.

the very idea that this needs to be explaining…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,261 ✭✭✭Gant21

Let’s be hopeful the social welfare system gets tightened up. By all means put a roof over the refugees heads and feed and cloth them but stop the pay outs.

How much is social welfare in Ukraine?

The Irish government massively subsidises third level education for Irish students.

This government really has to go,

Be honest now.. do you really think any alternative government drawn from Irish politicians would be any different?

The problems of this country can't be solved with such a change. That's been one of the problems with Ireland.. thinking that our political system will produce some viable solutions that aren't outweighed by a host of negatives.
