Got a rained off yesterday. Turned it out this afternoon and the wind did a wonderful job. Will turn it again tomorrow and bale for hay on Monday. It was nearly there on Thursday. Good bit of wind due tomorrow and there will be sunshine Monday.

Got mine baled yesterday afternoon, great hay. Easiest hay we ever made. Cut silage Wednesday evening baled this morning another day and it would have been close to been hay

If its been otherwise dry 3 hours of misty rain is far from lost.

    It was in great form

    Soaked on top and underneath

Cold day here yesterday, not great drying and rain again early tue

Dull asf this morning, looks like mist is near. Hopefully the day will shine out as I need 2 good days yet to get some of it in Hay. I reckon I'll have to wrap about 10 of the 15 acres as its just too green to get it in hay so I'll bale that much up this morning before it goes beyond hayledge.

I think once its at the point of Hayledge it is at its most vulnurable as rain will destroy it for hay after, and wet hayledge is not as good a wilted silage. So fingers crossed it stays dry as I should pull about 90 bales of Hayledge today and 90 Bales of Hayledge is better and more feeding than 120 bales of Silage

Have you considered upgrading the haybob?

Bringing in the man maths when you consider the fact it would make hay easier save (less turns, turn faster, less time, less diesel). It will nearly save you money 😅😅.

I am considering it, I have my eye on a 4 rotar tedder but idk will the 35x be able for it. Plus a tedder does not row up for baling so I'd still need to hold the haybob or else I wouldn't be able to do my own baling. I've a 2nd hand claas 46 for hay making so without a way to row up I'd be completely at the mercy of the contractor which is not nice when making hay.

I do like the going out in the 35x. It's a miser on diesel, and you can't beat that feeling driving her on a Summers day with blue a blue sky above and a quarter of a mile of a car tale back behind you on the road!

If you have a way of baling yourself then it makes sense alright. Modern Tedder comes into its own when the weather window is tight. Have seen some Tedder that have options of gates but the money increases a lot. It’s hard to justify the investment.

I'd say we can all forget about getting the Hay this week. Dull and threatening to mist this morning.

Rain due to cross the country in Tuesday and then more rain or drizzle on Thursday/Friday.

Think I'll wrap it up tomorrow.

After booking the baler for tomorrow evening. Looking good at the moment with great drying out. Hopefully it will be hay but if not we'll wrap it.

One good day tomorrow would be bliss😁

First bit of hay saved for the year. Done it for a neighbour. He has about 100 small square bales to sell if anyone around the midlands are interested.

Doing the final turn here at the moment. It's in cracking order. The wind yesterday was fantastic and then the sun today. Baling it up this afternoon. Wasn't the classic hay spell, but the one for the long haul. We were blessed over the past 2 years for hay weather

Just after giving it a bash with the Haybob. I'm going to stat bailing about 6 this evening, the Hay should be cracking good by then. I'm down to 8 acres after wrapping 7 acres last night. Made 77 bales, and I'm expecting at least 70 Hay bales so not too bad.

I have a feeling that we might not get this Rain on Tuesday either, I just don't trust the forecasts of late they have been very hit and miss and may have wasted 2 rolls of plastic but we'll see

If it was saved well, it's never a waste.

One could easily be regretting not wrapping the lot.

Great to hear a lot of ye got the weather for it

Is that the stuff that was only cut last Thursday before Fridays rain ?

Reason I ask is I cut mine on Thursday too but not a hope would it he fit to bale this evening.

Did it get many turns ?

Turned there at 10am, will row in now at 1 and bale this evening. Great condition so far

Cut Thursday, turned Sat,Sun and today. Will row up for the Baler in about an hours time and leave it till 8 before bailing. Yesterday was a much better day on Hay than I thought, the stuff was cracking this morning as I shock it out.

I have already taken half in Hayleadge as it was too green and leafy for Hay. It's probably similar to what you have. The rest was steamy overgrown stuff that was halfway saved as it was cut. I noticed Met has changed the forecast from Rain tomorrow to patchy drizzle in places. By the sounds of it will not get a drop but can you do when they make forecasts like that.

Just off the meadows. 125 bales of 18 acres, heavier than I thought it would be. 3/4 of the ground didn't see a sprinkle or a drop of slurry. Cracking order and clean. Was down since last Sunday.

Another 24 acres done here today for a neighbour. Cut Thursday and turned 3 times. Being baled up atm

Met Eireann forecasting alot of rain from Friday onwards....

Decided to hold off for another while as a result....if this doesnt materialise...i cant be held responsible for my actions

Good stuff great to get it.

Mine like that was cut Thursday, got soaked Friday, turned Saturday n twice today but is nowhere near fit for baling - even square baling.

I'm just hoping Wednesday and Thursday come ok n I might get it - if not I'll wrap as hayledge Thursday. Fingers 🤞

Today was a cracker in fairness, just a pity twas only the one day

Just can't understand how ye can get Hay that quick but I suppose the weather does always seem to be better further east than here in Galway .

The stuff I cut Thursday was only grazing ground that went a bit strong n got no manure and it's still a couple of days away from being fit.

I should put it out there that I do only have a haybob so maby that is a contributing factor 😀

It is. Same here. Fellas talking about three turns and fit. No chance with the hay Bob. Need 5 usually.

What are round bales of hay making this year?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,557 ✭✭✭Sami23

Agree 100% but at approx. 10k for the cheapest 4 rotor it's very hard to justify and also to come up with that sort of money for something that will sit in the shed for 50 weeks of the year.

    I would love one though.

Round bales of hay between 35 and 40 down this way

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,783 ✭✭✭893bet

Bought one 3 hours ago 😅. Second hand and got less than 1/4 of the 10k mentioned above!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,119 ✭✭✭mr.stonewall

All depends on what is in the bale and how well it's made. Some crap has been baled and some good stuff has been baled aswell
