Sold car and buyer has not changed ownership yet?

I sold a car a few months ago and I made the stupid mistake of trusting the buyer to send off the logbook. I checked the motor tax website and used the forgot pin function to see if the car is still in my name and it is. Am I liable if there is an accident or anything happens with the car? Obviously there is no proof that I sold the car and the buyer is not responding to me. What usually happens in these situations? Thanks.

contact shannon, they will send you a form to process that you sold it *you did sign the form right"?

get it witnessed by a commissioner of the peace for free. Send off, not in your name

once you signed that document it was sold

Buyer isn't covered by insurance, can't tax the car etc

I didn’t sign the logbook I just gave it to the buyer and he said he’d look after it. He was my mechanic so I trusted him but in hindsight that was a bad idea.

ok that might explain it so, he wont transfer it into his name and add an owner, so ask him, I would have presumed you dont know the person

I would get something done asap. I foolishly did the same with a car before and received 4×€147 fines from eflow.

It could be that he being in the trade he may have bought it to sell on and doesn't want another owner in the cert.

Was the car in test or needing work to pass?

Also you will be liable for any tolls as long as you are registered owner.

You should move fast to contact Shannon if he fails to respond.

Does he still have the car? He may be sending it off with the next owner's details when he sells it.

Not the correct way to go about it however and leaves you exposed. It should have been transfered into his name. If he isn't registered as a trader and doesn't want another owner added then that's his problem.

Sort it quick yourself.Any fines accrued by the car while it's in your name will be on you.As a matter of interest,why did you not signe the back of log book when you gave it to him?You must do that.

Yeah that may be what he is doing but he assured me he'd send it off and just hasn't bloody well bothered. Also he'd have special insurance too that would allow him to drive cars not in his name so makes no difference to him but I'm worried that I'd be liable for any damages if he crashed it and even god forbid killed someone

If I knew he was getting it and selling it on in his own time whilst driving it in the meantime I wouldn't have sold it to him

If he were to be caught speeding or any other offences it couldn't be me that has to take the wrap there must be procedures for that in this day and age. I didn't think of it unfortunately my first time selling a car in years

I wouldn't worry too much about liability over an accident or third party liability.

Your main concern is parking fines or tolls.

Don't beat yourself up for trusting him, it happens.

I sold two parts cars one time without transferring and didn't think any more about it until AGS arrived at the door.

They sold one on and a young lad got it going. No tax, no insurance, no NCT and driving around. He took the rap, no repercussions for me.

Never did that again though.

I know that's pretty much what I expected would happen but I'd still rather not have the risk and concern there and the possibility of having to go to court etc. He's lost a customer in me anyway so what goes around comes around
