Staff meetings outside rostered hours

My girlfriend is a nurse manager, working at a private home for last number of years. They have a point in contract " In-Service Training & Meetings: All members of staff are expected to attend staff meetings as arranged by the Employer. The Employer will endeavour where possible to schedule meetings and trainings at a time most convenient to staff".

She's been asked to attend training frequently on days off, mostly because the other manager in work has kids and prefers to be in work when meeting is on. Normally she's quite obliging but it's becoming increasingly obvious that her line manager is not taking into consideration her time. I told her to stand up for herself, but the contract is clear and signed.

Considering she does not get remuneration for attending outside rostered hours, is this something we can kick back on?

Surely she is a union member and can get advice from them regarding this. If she is, her rep should be able to get involved in in negotiations with regards to the training suiting all parties

I know from 1st August 2022 that mandatory training must be rostered during working hours (due to EU Directive 2019/1152/EU), but not sure if meetings count.

It might be in contract, but doesn't mean it is unpaid.

You are required to attend meeting then you should be paid or take time off in lieu.

That's how it normally works in normal workplaces.

She can’t work and not get paid.

Also, she has the legal right under new legislation to disconnect from work when she isn’t rostered on.. the ‘right to disconnect’

The only thing is that it might not be transposed into legislation yet. There is a lag sometimes between this happening (https://ec.europa.eu/social/main.jsp?langId=en&catId=1313 - see note at bottom ) .

Are you being a bit too controlling?

It's her job, and her relationships to manage. It's her who needs to do any kicking back, not "us".

Especially as a manager, work outside rostered hours is sometimes required. In this case for operational reasons. It may be appropriate to ask for this time to be paid - but equally it may be career limiting and have her marked as a clock-watcher.

what has your opinion on how relationships should be got to do with what the OP asked.

might surprise you but some relationships work in pairs.

If she's not getting paid, she should be getting time off in lieu or overtime payment.

As a nurse manager there would be an expectation of sometimes having to attend meetings on your day off as, with any shift work location, it's not possible to meet relevant people at the same time.

One of my managers works day shifts only but the staff that he is responsible for, work nights only. Therefore he would be expected to have his meetings with them at night.

People are not hired in pairs.

If the OP approaches his/her girlfriends employer to "kick back" about the girlfriends working arrangements, then the OP will be told to Foxtrot Oscar. Its not something that any employer will discuss with someone partner.

I think any sane person knows not to approach someone else’s employer.

do you agree also or think the OP is controlling because he refers to them both as us?

Sorry lads didn’t mean to give impression I’d be interfering in any way.

She’s her own woman and makes the decisions at the end of the day, and believe you me she wears the trousers whether I like to think I do has no bearing on it.

just FYI she asked to be rostered on for the training and the boss agreed. They’re regularly taking the piss in there and she’s quite confident in all walks of life except work. I didn’t want to give her my own advice without soliciting the advice on here as its usually good to get another opinion and boards has gotten me out of many sticky situations, it’s a shame how unused it’s been recently.

she’s from out of the country and finds it all very different, I don’t go spouting instructions at her.
