skoda superb...anything to look out for?

I have started my search for second hand car and have decided on a skoda superb as seem to be a decent all rounder...seems most are diesel so will prob go with that and DSG box, 2016-2019 im thinking, anything i should look out for with them as common faults, rust etc

Ive a 2015 estate.

Comfortable car. Never had a problem with it.

2015 would be the older model. Newer model is from 2016 onwards and shares many parts with the VW Passat and other VAG cars. DSG gearbox needs servicing every 60k km afaik. 1.6d is underwelming in them, 2.0d has a timing belt which needs changing every 160k km afaik. If your driving style doesn't suit diesel then find a petrol. Also unless you need the extra practicality of a hatchback then have a look at the Passat too as used prices for both are very similar these days.

Skoda family, down through the years..currently, 2 x Superbs, 1 x Octavia. Previous Skodas include a Roomster..( 400'000 Klms and still going last I heard) 2 Octavias, all 1.6 diesels. Aside from normal servicing and replacement of tyres, brakes, service parts ( timing belts, water pump, wiper blades etc.) never a bother with any of them.

Great cars, best car I've ever owned. They tick so many boxes. We have two (petrol, manual and DSG) and neither have had any serious issues. Routine servicing is also very reasonable.

Things to look for:

Intermittent DSG warning "Error! Workshop leave vehicle in P position

The above is an issue throughout the VAG DSG range. The fault of a corroded microswitch, expensive fix but does not effect the car so can be ignored.

Climatronic pollution sensors all fail, cheap and easy fix.

Stock discs are rubbish and prone to rust, yours would have been changed hopefully.

Some early models had a loud rogue buzz behind the dash at certain RPM, most should fixed under warranty.

Bigger wheels (19's Sportline) produce quite a lot of road noise, 17's are much, much quieter.

Chrome trim can peel, particularly on door handles and DSG gear knob.

Door handles can also stick, check all of them.

Exterior boot release can also fail.

Gloveboxes can rattle.

I've never had one with the DSG transmission, so can't speak from experience, but in the very first ones, they gave some trouble, since rectified. For the peeling door chromes, that happens because over time the front doors tend to drop, and when opening, the chrome on the front door catches on the chrome on the rear door, pulling it off. i've had it done under warranty, but after awhile, it started the same tricks again, and I returned it to the dealership a 2nd time..They fixed it with a hack saw...cutting off a small piece of the chrome....instead of resetting the hinges, which is what the manual says, and is the warranty procedure. But anyway, I fixed it myself in the end, overall, a great car, and I would not let a relatively small item like a loose chrome change my opinion, annoying though it may be....

We had the chrome window issue on one too, effected early cars. Ours was not dropping doors though, just tolerances too tight. OP, check the chromes inside the doors, some were fixed pretty poorly with black sealant evident.

Unlike a lot of cars there are no deal breakers with the Superb, it's a wonderfully rounded machine.

I had a 2011 estate - diesel, manual. Put just under 450,000km on the clock.

Just replaced a clutch at and shocks at 350,000km. Changed one headlight bulb, one brake light bulb, two sets of discs over the life time of the car.

It was a work horse, still a comfy ride at the end - only got rid of it as my milage dropped to almost nothing.

I really loved that car !

We've a 182 petrol estate, and rate it pretty highly

check for the few wee little bits that come with the car - umbrellas in the doors, bootlight is a removable torch, ice scraper in the petrol flap what I can think of off the top of my head

Apparently the ski hatch (centre arm rest) can be a bit of a weakness. Make sure it opens, closes, locks ok. I think the locking tabs can be broken off if they are extended and someone trys to slam it closed.

Had heard of the chrome trim issue, thankfully we never suffered with that

We had to replace the battery pretty recently - pricy enough item, and car needs to be programmed to notify of the change

DSG is more refined than the manual. Quieter, no gearbox or clutch noise. It can be a bit slow witted in first and engaging reverse, but everywhere else it is a fantastic unit.
