I'm not sure what any of that has to do with any posts made in this thread. I suggest that you may be ranting into the wind.

Well, you'd know a bit about that I suppose, as in wagging the finger at people who have eff-all power/influence in changing the situation there.

But I imagine the poster is inching towards the fact that when Arafat died he left an estate worth $1 Billion. The self appointed "pro" Palestine woke brigade never seem to raise this.

In all honesty, do you seriously not see this as a serious impediment to Palestinian independence? They insist on being governed by Mafiosi types who have a deeply vested financial history and interest in keeping them as serfs.

A fairly typical cry of the oppressor that the oppressed are incapable of governing themselves or that they are in fact being oppressed by a horrible regime, and that by occupying territory they're protecting the native population. Russia is making the exact same claims about Ukraine.

The fact is that all new and proto-governments tend to be more chaotic and closer to criminal gangs and militias than they are to civilised governments. It's a consequences of the circumstances which gave birth to them.

You won't find a single country anywhere in the world that didn't start out being run by warlords, criminals, terrorists or oligarchs/monarchs.

This is not an excuse for refusing to allow a country independence, the aim of the west is to assist them to move past this point and towards a stable society in years rather than decades.

In any case it's hypocritical for Israel to claim the Pelstinian leadership(s) are corrupt. Not one modern leader of Israel hasn't been on the take and guilty of war crimes.

Good post and I’d mostly agree. All it takes is the passing of a couple of generations and the fading away of first-hand memory and emotional attachment to the chaotic and often violent and bloody circumstances in which an independent nation is born — until one day you find the people of that independent nation sneering at the stumblings of nascent nations.

Hang on there now a second Seamus, I said nothing of the sort and would greatly appreciate you not putting words in my mouth. The Palestinian people were quite free to vote for whomever they liked.

Your implication being that they were voting "wrong" and their claim to independence was being "impeded" by voting for someone corrupt.

What you're saying is that Israel is right to refuse to recognise Palestine so long as Palestinians refuse to vote for the "right" people.

The only impediment to Palestinian independence is the refusal of Israel and her allies to recognise it. Nothing more. It would be hypocritical especially of Israel to claim the Palestinian leadership are too corrupt or hostile to be permitted in power.

Once again Seamus you are trying to put words in my mouth. I am not "implying" anything. The Palestinian people are free to vote for whomever they choose. Hamas have taken that right away from them, not Israel. They can write whatever they wish on their ballot papers. Their totally free decision to put "x" next to some guy who shafted them to the tune of a billion dollars is something you'd have to ask them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68,173 ✭✭✭✭seamus

Your desperate attempts to backtrack from the implications of what you were saying mean that you're basically saying nothing. You could likewise ask Israelis why they voted for a guy who took millions of dollars in bribes, has openly genocidal ambitions and deliberately fuelled anti-Israel hatred across the middle east in order to secure more military funding.

If Netanyahu hadn't worked to unravel the progress towards peace that was made by his predecessors, Israel would be closer to peace now than ever before. Instead he deliberately pushed for a more aggressive Israel to further fuel the victim complex. Israelis are of course free to vote for a guy who made them immeasurably less safe in order to put money in his own pocket.

Asking Israelis why they voted for Netanyahu is like asking Irish people why they voted for Haughey, but I'm not "backtracking" from anything. I'm talking about Palestinian elections, not Israeli elections.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68,173 ✭✭✭✭seamus

Your contention is that Palestinians are impeding their own march towards independence by electing the wrong people. You then use Arafat as an example of the "wrong" people, even though he got closer to peace and a solution to this problem than any leader in history. That's a fact, no matter what else he may have done.

This would demonstrate that your claim is false and this "impediment" to freedom must obviously be coming from elsewhere.

Well, he may well have gotten closer to freedom, but it was still him who ultimately rejected it. This does not demonstrate that my claim is false, though I generally agree with the rest.

Some good news for a change -

"BDS victory: General Mills says it will divest from Israel

After a two-year campaign targeting the company, General Mills says it will stop making Pillsbury products on stolen Palestinian land"

Although the Israeli military isn't that advanced.

They have some great planes and weapons, some very good allies, but a **** army. They send their planes out from time to time on bombing missions, and they usually come home; but -

They were beaten by a ragtag mob in Lebanon back in the naughties, and scurried home with their tail between their legs.

A group of poorly-armed civilian fighters has their measure. Apart from that, they have a tendency to use unarmed civilians for target practice. Some people might call this Terrorism.

    No suprise, tbh.

"Israeli forces - and not Palestinian militants - shot dead a high-profile Al Jazeera journalist, the UN's human rights office has concluded.

A spokeswoman said the findings were the result of "independent monitoring" of the incident on 11 May.

The killing of Shireen Abu Aqla, who was reporting on an Israeli operation in the occupied West Bank, caused widespread outrage."

...meanwhile, the slow but steady effort to drive palestinians out continues

"Early yesterday morning, Israeli occupation forces demolished several Palestinian-owned structures in Khirbet Ibzei community, north of the city of Tubas in the occupied Jordan Valley, head of the village council Abdul Majeed Khdeirat said.

Speaking to Wafa news agency, Khdeirat said Israeli occupation forces raided the community very early in the morning and demolished the structures, including the village council headquarters and a pool used to collect rainwater for irrigation purposes."

Brave Kid, surprised the Soldier didn't shoot him in "self defense"

Considering the chances of him being held accountable, its a bit suprising allright

"The odds that a Palestinian would see his or her complaint result in the prosecution of the soldier who harmed them: 2%."

It's very difficult for me to criticise Israel after the crimes committed in the past which held the Jew as their sole victim. They are a people with ptsd, and we must forgive them when they lash out. We must also educate others about the holocaust.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 9,052 ✭✭✭Odhinn

Israel is not representative of all Jews, and criticising the state of Israels actions is not anti-jewish.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 290 ✭✭j2

It can lead to antisemitism if we allow criticism of Israel regarding edge cases. Antisemitism is the most awful crime today, because we have a lot of reasons to understand it. I take a very hard line with antisemitism, and it is this: if you present as readily available to criticism of Israel despite questions regarding the particular situation, then you are probably not a big fan of us. Also I will add, the Israeli government has very intensive documentation of the conflict, which reports the information in an objective sense. Better to assume a pro Israel stance, then wait for evidence which won't come.

Giving such carte blanche authority to any states government is dangerous and naive in the extreme. You'll also find that the colonisation of the West Bank, Arab East Jerusalem etc is an illegal project, regardless of the Israeli states opinion on the matter.

What happened nearly 80 years ago shouldn't ever be transformed into a situation whereby a past victim can become the modern victimiser. What the Nazi's did to the Jews cannot ever be allowed as an excuse for what Jews do to their neighbours.

And , for the record, the Jews were not the "sole victims" of Nazi policy.

I love antisemitism being propped up as a reason to excuse Israel to murder journalists.
