Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

    Huge game tomorrow between Kerry and Offaly in the Joe McDonagh. Looking like the winner will qualify for the final with Antrim

    Likewise in the Christy Ring big game between Mayo and Derry. Winner of that will play Kildare in the final

    In the Nickey Rackard Tyrone, Donegal and Roscommon still have a chance of making the final. Tyrone and Donegal playing each other with Roscommon playing Fermanagh

    With Monaghan been deducted points i assume its looking like a Lory Meagher final between Leitrim and Longford

    Roscommon already essentially guaranteed final. Only way to not qualify is for Fermanagh to beat them and Tyrone to beat Donegal but they’d have to lost by 19+ points more than Donegal lose

    Tyrone vs Donegal - Tyrone have to beat them to qualify for final

    Bad form for Ring/Rackard/Meagher - Not set yet for Saturday or Sunday next weekend. Still awaiting confirmation

    Sounded a great game down in Tralee and moves Offaly a step closer to the Joe McDonagh final. Offaly host Carlow next weekend with Kerry travelling to Antrim

    A game Kerry will be wondering how they didn't win.

    They missed a penalty and hit 5 easy chances wide straight in front of goal. Few soft goals too.

    Looking like a Antrim v Offaly final which I expect Antrim to win handy enough.

    Antrim just seem on a real mission this year. They were the standout team outside the top 9 all the way through the league too.

    Antrim surely favorites but Offaly gave them enough of it a few weeks ago and could easily have won.

    I was there. Great value for €10! Disappointed with the result but went down fighting. After Offaly's 4th goal it was looking like Offaly were going to run riot. Incredible that Kerry levelled. Offaly, with the experience of a former Kilkenny hurler as manager, had a playbook move to score the winning point. Offaly like to puck the ball out to the corner back. They then work many scores from there.

    They found an excellent balance in the numbers for the lower tiers of the hurling championship. Reminds me of the football league.

    You are right. The standard of hurling is excellent. A very competitive championship. The McDonagh finalists will have home advantage for the All-Ireland Preliminary Quarter-finals. That is a massive reward.

    There is as big a gap between the regular JoeMcD teams and the rest as there is between Joe and Liam. Meath probably done no worse than anyone else would have.

    Antrim already being qualified and Kerry needing the win tipped the balance in Kerry's favour today. Well done and thanks l you to Carlow for winning today. Carlow pushed Antrim close in Round 3. The McDonagh Cup has been fantastic quality.

    Note the All-Ireland Preliminary Quarter-finals:

    The McDonagh winner will host 3rd in Munster.

    The McDonagh runner-up will host 3rd in Leinster.

    Prediction preliminary quarter-finals:

    Antrim v Cork

    Where would be a decent pub to meet up with a few lads before Saturdays Joe McDonagh cup game. Whilst it's been a year or two since I was last in Croke I believe both Quinns and (maybe) Hill 16 are no longer in existence?

    Is the Big Tree still operating or McGraths?

    If Kerry win, should they automatically go into the Munster championship ?

    I know currently they need to play the bottom ranked Munster team in a play-off (so Tipp, based on this year)

    Realistically they aren't at the level of the other 5 Munster teams. But then again, if they are to ever come back to senior, if not now then when ?

    If you win a lower tier, you should be permitted to enter a higher tier. There will be difficult matches for sure but there are learnings from that.

    There are 2 options:

    1. Munster winner determining the province that has 6 teams for a year.

    Or else:

    2. If Kerry ever win the McDonagh Cup, Munster should expand to 6 teams for a year, with the McDonagh reducing to 5. After 1 year of a 6 team Munster Championship, whoever finishes 6th should be relegated to the McDonagh.


    These 2 options provide a pathway for fairness for everyone.

    Shouldn't the winner of the Joe McDonagh just automatically go into Leinster and replace the bottom team there? If Antrim can be in Leinster then why can't Kerry? Surely to God it would bring them on in a competition where they could realistically win a game or 2? The fact they have to play a play off they could never win is a disgrace.

    They don't need to go to Leinster. There are 2 perfectly reasonable ways to have them in Munster in the post above your own.

    As for bringing them on I think moving them to Leinster and dragging the team all over the country in the process isn't worth it for the 1 game they might win.

    They could go to Munster alright but they'll just be beat out the gate 5 times and they'll still have to travel. In Leinster they'd be playing the likes of Westmeath Laois Wexford Dublin etc games they'd have a real shot of winning and progressing they'd be humped in Munster.

    Every province should have some threat of relegation. If Kerry are good enough some year to win the McDonagh, they should just simply be allowed to enter Munster as the 6th team. After a year then, relegate whoever finishes 6th. Most likely Kerry of course after 5 incredibly difficult games. At least Kerry will be returning to the McDonagh with invaluable experience.

    We have seen firsthand the benefit Westmeath and Antrim have gotten from playing at a higher level.

    They would most likely be fighting it out with either Laois or Westmeath for relegation not both as one would be relegated.

    At lets be honest how far will it really progress them. Will beating the weaker Leinster teams make them good enough to beat the better ones.

    As for travel there is a huge huge difference between Kerry to Limerick, Ennis and Cork compared to Galway, Dublin and Wexford

    The standard in Munster is way higher than the standard in Leinster I agree that if Kerry win Joe McDonagh they should be promoted but I'd argue Leinster gives them a much better chance to play at a higher level for longer. The benefits Westmeath and Antrim have got have been from Leinster 5 hammerings in Munster would not be of the same benefit.

    I wouldn't want Kerry competing with Westmeath, Laois or Antrim for the right to remain in the Leinster Championship. There must be a Munster solution to a Munster problem.

    Antrim and Offaly have the potential to close the gap to the Leinster top 4. It's going to take a few years. It'll be a great sign of progress in years to come if Leinster have to consider an expansion to 8.
