In fairness there were a few shots clearly showing height differentials.

So Top Gun 3 with the mistress or going to carry on the tradition?

Watched it yesterday in the states. All the ads for it pushed me over the edge. Very enjoyable and very much lacks the woke bs which so often ruins modern films. The one female pilot was very believable and slotted naturally into the role without being forced down your throat. Character development was a bit lacking though. Sure, we had MAVERICK and the on-off girlfriend, but beyond that, it didn't go deep and relied heavily on the ground made solid from TG1.

It's a fun ride for sure but where the original was grounded well enough in some sort of realism by the end of this one it was absolute fantasyland stuff.

    Still enjoyed it of course.

Watched it last night in 4DX (the bumper chair with abit of water at cineworld aha, not intentionally, just because that time slot fits us).

Oh I adore this project so much after watching it. Strongly recommend to watch it in cinema. My whole family enjoys it so this is my new favourite choice for a family movie occasion.

It reminds me of the 'purer' times back in 90s movies - like people actually put hard work into movies to entertain audience. So ya this sequel ticks all the boxes of a good 90s movie with moderate updates on modern stuff (especially the details and effects). It may be rather overall predictive but all ends up and holds up very well in all aspects (plot, characters, pacing, soundtracks, effects), with just the right amount of cheese here and there. And I think Tom cruise is a better actor this time around aha.

    Thoroughly enjoyable.

There's a relevant pic in the Cool Vids and pics thread as to why SPOILER the Kelly McGillis character isn't in the film. BUT, she wasn't even mentioned. Even Meg Ryan/Rooster's mum got a flashback and storyline.

Because her character had zero relevance, to the plot. Would your ex, from 30 years previous, have any impact on current events?

And not everyone has access to the Adrenochrome mainline like the Cruiser!

The part at the beginning where Maverick is flying the Mach 10 scramjet is real except for doing Mach 10. I do not think that is possible yet. I actually thought it was CGI'd but no when he flys over the cabin and the roof comes of it that is real and was not planned. It was supposed to be tied down and Tom Cruise kept asking this because he did not want anyone to get injured.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

Do you need to have seen or remember the original to watch this ?

I really don't want to watch the original again, but this sounds like a decent movie without all the cheese of the original.

It doesn’t hurt to have seen the original just to pick up on a few references and nods (visual and musical nods included). But for the purposes of plot all that really matters from the first film is:

Maverick’s friend and partner Goose died in an accident during a training mission, leaving behind a wife and son.

Iceman was Maverick’s rival but eventually they came to respect each other

Neither film is particularly deep or complex, let’s be honest 😎

I thought small amount of the effects we see are CGI ya, but barely noticeable. My brother is a big fan of Ace Combat games and he approved the aerial elements in the movie ha.

Is a very common problem I see on the average actors in those CG fest movies that I can tell they are acting in a green screen (that took me out of the moment instantly). But all actors in this sequel reactions are so real, and ya the visuals and practical effects look so damn good.

And ya knowing Tom cruise's obsession on practical/real effects, truly an awesome a breath of fresh air actually seeing so many 'real' scenes in this movie. Respect to the man really and he just might be the last and best action star of the generation.

I just might actually watch it again in cinema aha.

Saw it last night.. Awesome movie!

I was initially concerned that it was going to be a straight rehash of the original, but instead it managed to stay faithful to the original but still did its own thing and moved Maverick's character forward.

Supporting cast turned out to be pretty good as well, particularly Rooster. Jon Hamm was a weak spot though but still passable.

Flight sequences and cinematography were great thanks to minimal use of CGI. Live action and practical effects will always win over what some art department can generate on their computer. It does take a while to get to the action but it's definitely worth it when it does.

I rewatched the original over the weekend so would definitely advise that before going to this one.

Overall a very worthy sequel that is probably the best thing I've seen this year.

    One question.

Ars people who need glasses allowed jet fighters!!?!!

Was he wearing them when flying? I think they were trying to differentiate and not have every airforce pilot/weapons op in the film looking like a stud/babe.

Are people allowed to wear contacts in a fighter jet? It is allowed on commercial jets.

Anyone else think the Hangman actor wasn't acting and probably like that in RL 😂

You need perfect eyesight to become a commercial pilot.

You can wear contact lenses to correct your eyesight to 20/20 in civil aviation (e.g. commercial airline pilot) but not in the military.

Just back from it and loved it, going again with the family on Sunday!

I watched the original for the first time in years the other night; it's an iconic 80's movie and was always a cheesefest but man what a bag of cringe; it was a struggle to get through it tbh! But I'm glad I did watch it again before this as I wouldn't have remembered most of it and the narrative threads between the two films.
