i fail to understand KOB being let go. To my mind he was the in form Irish No.2 last season, and dropped off the radar completely this year. Scannell seems to be riding on previous reputation at this stage - good bit of youth behind him i suppose.

If KOB was a good as you seem to think, he wouldn't be signing for Ealing Trailfinders.

I hear this a lot, that so and so player who leaves for the Championship or Pro D2 shouldn't have been let go. But there's a reason that they're going to those divisions and not signing for Prem or Top 14 teams. And if they're not good enough to play in those divisions, then is not a surprise that Munster released them.

Feel free to search for comments from me on KOB last year and you will see similar comments from me and others re his form.

Why would I search for comments from you stating an opinion that you're also stating here? I state again that if he was actually as good as you think, then he wouldn't be moving to the Championship. He'd be moving to a Prem or Top 14 team. The simple fact is he's an excellent club player, but not good enough to be starting hooker for a team looking to win trophies. The fact that Scannell isn't either doesn't change that fact.

Injury update: Four players sustained injuries in Saturday night’s clash against Leinster.

There is unfortunate news for Jack Daly as he suffered an ACL injury and will be seen by a specialist.

Jean Kleyn sustained a neck injury and has undergone a scan and will be managed by the medical department. It is not expected to be a long-term injury.

Andrew Conway had an aggravation of his previous knee injury and will be assessed this week to determine his availability.

Alex Kendellen was removed following his HIA and will undergo the return to play protocols under the supervision of the medical department.

In good news, Craig Casey and Stephen Archer will return to training this week following their respective illnesses.

Peter O’Mahony (stinger), Damian de Allende (chest) and Simon Zebo (chest/rib) return to full training this week.

Continuing to rehab: Neil Cronin (ankle), John Hodnett (knee), Dave Kilcoyne (neck), Tadhg Beirne (thigh), RG Snyman (knee).

Bad news for Daly but I suppose better getting an injury at the end of the season than at the start of the new season. Just hope he does recover from it.

Munster absolutely cannot go into next season with Archer as their first choice tighthead. It's just not an option. They should have signed one last summer instead of bringing Jenkins in.

Saracens had to let Vincent Koch go to stay under the salary cap, it's a shame Munster couldn't swoop in for him before Wasps got him. He would have been a 10x better signing than extending Snyman's contract IMO.

I think Archer is unfairly criticised a lot of the time. It was Josh Wycherley's side that was going back more against Toulouse, and Ryan was actually under more pressure than Archer when he came on, I thought.

Koch would have been an incredible signing, but would the IRFU okay another NIQ tighthead if Leinster have Ala'alatoa?

Munster were trying to sign Vincent Koch in 2016 but the IRFU blocked it because they needed us to develop irish qualified front rows.

In that 6 years since BJ Botha left, we were stuck with Archer and Ryan who are not at the level of knockout European fixtures

I think David Nucifora blocked Munster from going after NIQ tightheads this year too

Munster know that we're seriously underpowered in the front row, but the IRFU consider it more important to focus on developing young tightheads for Ireland even if it means Munster cannot compete at the business end of the season.

I suspect We'll be in the same place in 6 more years if Salanoa and Knox fail to deliver. From what we've seen of Salanoa so far, he's really good at filling those bucket seats in the stands where the injured players sit, and that was enough to earn him a 3 year contract

Sounds like Munsters issue is their inability to develop homegrown TH props of sufficient quality, hell Knox and Salanoa are imports, and they are Munsters best hope of a quality IQ TH Prop.

Every Province seems to have a particular position they struggle in. Even with Leinster's production line, they seem to struggle with 9's.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,210 ✭✭✭Former Former Former

Salanoa is injured so much it's hard to know what level he's really at.

Knox is 23 now and has been in the setup for 4 or 5 years. If he's not overtaking Archer in the very near future, then Munster need to be looking elsewhere. Is Snyman the only NIQ signed up for next year? If so, maybe there's scope to get someone in at TH, even with Alaalatoa being at Leinster.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,269 ✭✭✭✭aloooof

Fekitoa is coming in as well. But TH is definitely a problem position. To be fair to Knox, 23 is still plenty young for a TH so he still has plenty of time on his side, but Munster's need is fairly immediate.

Forgot about Fekitoa. Think he'll be a great signing and dare I say it, better than DDA.

agreed. Hes a guy who seems to give 100% every time. Also, hes a better baller than DDA.

In regards to Archer, it's not his scrummaging that is the issue. That's usually solid. It's his lack of contribution around the field and the fact he gives away a couple of really stupid penalties every game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,852 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

The other side to that coin is that he's had next to zero game time this season. Would a Prem/T14 side go looking for a player who has been dropped like that?

One thing is for certain, he'll likely get better game time at Ealing next season and if successful there he will be back in the top tier for the '23-'24 season

There isn't an other side to this. He's 31 and has never been first choice at Munster in a time when the quality of hookers in the squad has been average at best. This season he is 4th choice behind an academy player.

Munster (and Irish) fans have a tendency to build players up to a level beyond their actual ability and this is one of those cases.

As I said previously, he's a good player, but he's nowhere near a top level player.

Naming rights sold, a company already sponsoring the team, not the main sponsor, and an International team lined up to take a beating (again) next season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 26,511 ✭✭✭✭phog

Putting 2+2 together and getting whatever I want I'm guessing Addidas.

They then get international coverage next season with Munster playing the All Blacks.

If the money is good, I'm happy with that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,098 ✭✭✭Poorside

Nope on both, I'm not sure how the news about the naming rights will be taken by the supporters when it's "delivered" hint hint, wink wink.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 26,511 ✭✭✭✭phog

    DHL 😁

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,723 ✭✭✭theVersatile

Here's the list of potential nominees. Of the likely candidates, I think Pinergy Park, DHL Park/Stadium, and Vodafone Park are probably the catchiest sounding (or at least the least mouthful, in my opinion anyways). As much as I'd love Mr Binman Park. Spin Stadium would be okay as well but they'd have to drop the Southwest.

I'd love to see a Pacific Islands team be put together given the recent emphasis in Super Rugby being put on the Drua and Moana Pasifika; though I imagine it'll be something a bit "meh" like Argentina 'A' or the USA.

A poster on MFs saying they're hearing the match may not now happen, despite both teams in agreement to play it.

Few rumours flying around about it, Aus in DHL TP would get a lot of people through the gate.

Was trying to think of possible options re TH signings for Munster.. There seems precious few likely available.. One that did stand out was Kieran Brookes.. He's a former Grand Slam winner with Eng as starting TH, starting TH at the 2015 RWC.. A 20 stone, top level scrummager with Northampton, Wasp and now Toulon.. Still only 31.. AND, he previously represented Ireland at underage level (u18, u19) before declaring and playing for Eng so he must have Irish ancestry.. As he hasn't played for Eng since 2016, I think that means he would be eligible for Ireland at the RWC next year under the new eligibility rules should he declare.. Both Munster TH and Ireland back-up TH scrumaging woes could be solved there with an ambitious IRFU offer.. Rowntree was his scrumaging coach at Eng as well and Keith Wood is apparently his hero.

I've been at a few Stormers games in Cape Town and the pre match DHL branded entertainment is, eh, interesting to say the least.
