This is getting too much attention by the media; but they know people will click and talk, so it works.

First, Monkeypox is related to smallpox. The smallpox vaccine is already effective against it to a large degree (upwards of 85%). Medicines already exist to fight it, too - such as tecovirimat.

Second, Monkeypox is a DNA virus - not an RNA one (which COVID was). This means that it has a great ability to repair any damage rather than mutate into variant after variant (like COVID).

Third, Monkeypox is a close contact virus spread rather than airborne (like COVID). Yes, it will spread (as all viruses do), but nowhere near pandemic-style levels. Also, Monkeypox only becomes contagious once symptoms start. That's a big thing, because with COVID etc., you can be asymptomatic and spread the virus days before you develop symptoms. This critically limits spread.

Fourth, the strain at present is the weak Nigerian strain. Some say in Africa this has a fatality of 1%, but this is presumably much, much lower in a population already vaccinated against smallpox and/or with better healthcare systems. There haven't been any deaths so far from this outbreak.

Fifth, Monkeypox is relatively self-limiting. Sure, the rash is pretty unpleasant but it all subsides within 2-3 weeks on average.

In all, this is scaremongering and absolutely nothing like COVID.

thats true for the original virus but when you can put it through a bio lab it can certainly be made more contagious

The good news is that a huge swathe of older Irish people who got smallpox vaccines uupto the late 1970s are vaccinated against monkeypox.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

I quite enjoy seeing people panic over absolutely nothing so I hope this media coverage continues for a while.

Hmm .. John Campbell started off skeptical about this, but he seems to have started **** over it now ... so bad news...

That's not a good sign - he was a reasonable (and immensely knowledgeable) voice during covid. I'll have to watch his videos. Not looked at for a while

I wouldn't say your holiday is over. I don't think or hope it doesn't cause spread like it did with covid.

Dr. Campbell said as much, but as always, time will tell (though he is probably right, usually is).

Not sure what this is supposed to mean, but it looks like some sort of unqualified accusation.

Hilarious, he seems to think we are the same poster :D

Well, that poster is free to think whatever they want. I can't prove that we are not, and they can't prove that we are. Though, we are of course not.

Dr Campbell isn't concerned that Monkeypox will become the next COVID. He has repeatedly stated otherwise, but that - like any infectious disease - it should be monitored and spread limited as much as possible.

It appears that homosexual activity and gay sex parties are primarily responsible for this outbreak. There were gay sex parties in Madrid and Belgium where gay men from all over the world, including from Nigeria, gathered. They then left the parties, went back to their home country, and spread it from there.

This is the equivalent of what happened with HIV.

But it's not going to be another pandemic in the COVID-style sense, and there won't be restrictions like we've seen before.

Why don't governments move quickly and shut down all gay community events, bar, clubs and dating apps. Pride month starts next week so cases will explode. Considering what happened during Covid these are small measures that won't really impact the broader economy and have a good chance of stopping the spread.

    That's not necessary.

Monkeypox spreads only when symptoms appear. Better to monitor close contacts and to educate the public on what symptoms to look out for / to isolate when symptoms emerge.

Furthermore, not all cases are in homosexuals.

The WHO has reported the majority of cases are from gay men so it's seems like a reasonable choice which won't have any real impact on people's lives and can really halt the spread

Just to say I know nothing about epidemiology and only the very basics about monkeypox, but for someone more knowledgeable than me about this:

    Question 1:

As people with symptoms are being asked to self isolate for 3 weeks according to UK health advice, isn't it reasonable to assume that not all of them will, particularly if they only have mild symptoms? 3 weeks is a long time to sign off work if they only have mild symptoms.

    Question 2:

Given that reports have said a child is being treated in intensive care in the UK for this disease, and cases are rising, shouldn't there be some planning to protect children, as the disease and fatality rate is reportedly more severe among children?

Not sure I got one or any of my cohort.

Interesting stuff here from a quick Google from 2003.

The vaccine wasn't that safe, but a lot safer than smallpox. Miracle vaccine.

Revived vaccination research on smallpox after 9/11 as governments were worried about terrorist attacks spreading it.

Are you for real?? Or is this a pathetic attempt at trolling and trying to elicit a reaction.

How anyone could be scared to go on holidays because of this is beyond me. Then again, there are people still wearing masks whilst driving alone in their cars, so I suppose I really shouldn't be surprised by anything anymore

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,527 ✭✭✭fun loving criminal

You still think people wearing masks in their cars are scared? How about thinking a little, they could be going from shop to shop? But I wouldn't expect anything less from the monkey minimisers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 206 ✭✭Amenhotep

I am not scared of going on holidays, I am worrying that governments will sh1t the bed and decide to ban travel again.

I am f*cking raring to go!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,277 ✭✭✭growleaves

The monkey minimisers? Great name for a band.

As a monkey maximiser would you say now is the time to crack each other's heads open and feast on the goo inside?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,496 ✭✭✭✭Mad_maxx

isnt this a virus which only effects gay men ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 849 ✭✭✭petronius

Maybe rename it Pox-22, and not offend the monkeys!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,291 ✭✭✭dominatinMC

    Monkey minimisers 🤣🤣

Tbh I'm surprised you're able to get WiFi/mobile reception from your nuclear bunker.

Ah fair enough. If I were you, I wouldn't worry so much and instead look forward to the holiday.

It’s also not homophonic to ask the question in the post you responded to.
