I think it's a similar story for Munster over the years though, you are a big game cup team. You will get yourselves into a great mindset for a big european game, the performance will be lifted and the team will play better than the sum of it's parts.

But in lesser games, league games especially, there can be a mindset problem.

It's a very similar problem to what we have in Ulster.

I’d slightly disagree tbh, awec. My impression is that we’re doing enough in the regular season games to get us into knock-out stages, and it’s against the upper tier teams we’re struggling. The 2 teams we’ve struggled most against under JVG are Leinster and Saracens, often not firing a shot against them.

I get what you’re saying tho, we do still throw in the odd big performance like against Clermont.

Id agree with that. We generally beat who we should with the odd bad loss. And we rarely beat the best teams with the odd big performance.

Exactly my thoughts. There’s the odd loss to Connacht or Ospreys but that’s generally going to happen over the course of a season. Leinster lost to Cardiff, like.

So you're telling me aside from his try where he had a free 20m run in, he made just the four carries across 80 minutes?

Sounds like he struggled to get involved in the game. No doubt he's an explosive athlete but quiet yesterday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,790 ✭✭✭✭Burkie1203

Munster had 60% possession and still got beaten out the gate

Penny had 20 tackles and his other 4 carries averaged 8 metres apiece

    But yeah quiet

I don’t think Ahern has any reason to feel he played poorly, he had just as good a game as McCarthy in my opinion. The commentators would have been shouting from the rooftops if they saw McCarthy blow his nose properly during that game. Swap the players around and Ahern would have been raved about too.

So Ulster away followed by either Stormers in SA or Edinburgh? (Both away)

If Glasgow beat Leinster (very unlikely I know) and Munster end up playing Glasgow in the final (again, a long shot)

It would be a European knockout game with the winner getting the last slot in the Heineken Cup next year

I can't believe we've still not guaranteed our place and are relying on others to beat Glasgow

Obviously trolling but not unexpected from that poster

Obviously extremely unlikely to happen, but if both Munster and Edinburgh somehow won their away quarter finals, Munster would be at home in the semi as they finished above Edinburgh in the league.

I don't really accept that - One, I think all Irish Teams lift themselves for Cup Games but I think we've shown in plenty of league games that we're well up for them and capable of winning them. It will be interesting to see what happens next season when we play all teams outside of the international window and see how we perform in SA. Unfortunately, I think at this stage we probably have a mental block when it comes to Leinster, we scored 3 tries on Saturday then concede a penalty try and it looked like our heads dropped.

Thoughts on the game in general - felt Munster were below par, like a lawnmower with dirty petrol, when running smoothly we looked good then spluttered and farted along for a few minutes then back to running smoothly again. Both teams had howlers with some passes going astray but Leinster did enough to beat us. When Murray scored that try early in the second half I thought maybe we might get the win but the penalty try was the killer for us. Missing tackles didn't help us much either.

It's an indication of how close to the league was this year, with the addition of the SA teams. It's good for the league going forward, you'd imagine any slip ups could have a material effect. To me, it doesn't feel as bad a season as 2016 under Axel when we finished 6th and only qualified on the last day.

Interesting wrinkle to the structure tho.

QF KO out: Ulster v Munster (19:35), Kingspan Stadium, Friday

Munster had been in jeopardy since failing to secure the win against the Lions.

The win against Ulster away put a better look on it, but I called it ages ago that we would most likely get passed out due to the run of fixtures in the other teams’ favour.

At least the draw now avoids Leinster to the final.

The URC rules on the semi-final host team say the winner of the other quarter-final will host it unless the URC decide otherwise, I wonder why they didn’t just say highest ranked team gets home advantage in all playoff matches.

So, the question needs to be answered definitely by the URC, do Munster have a chance of hosting the semi if both away teams win on our side of the draw, or not.

Either way, Ulster is the focus now.

My asked me as would we travel up, my reply was this match will be a Friday evening - this confirmation of the fixture as good as rules us out from heading up.

Don't think I'd have been going up anyway but having to take off time for work (if working Mon-Fri) and potentially having to stay the night if going by public transport is bit of a hurdle. Would have thought that game and potential for most away support. Wouldn't have been a bad idea to have that game the Sunday evening with the back hol or Sat evening but it is what it is. At least no games clash.

Thats what I thought too, but then RTE have this

The winner of that interpro will be away to either the Stormers or Edinburgh in the semi-finals.

Is it possible that Edinburgh could get the home semi because they'll have beaten a higher placed team in the QFs... or more likely, RTE got it wrong?

    Not.

You would imagine the 'unless URC decide otherwise' clause was inserted in case one country was swamped with Covid, but that isn't the case now.

As FFF stated above, most likely Edinburgh would gain home advantage due to beating the higher seed.

To be fair that’s a valid way to proceed.

Will be an extremely difficult ask to beat Ulster, then likely travel to SA to play the stormers, and then likely back to the Aviva again

If I was a dreamer, I can see us beating Ulster with Coombes, POM, De-Allende, Zebo and Beirne back.

The trip to Capetown, of all the SA teams, is probably the easiest to play at. It's not at altitude, and it's almost the middle of winter over there so the temperature should be less of a shock

A full strength Munster team should be able to give the stormers a run for their money

Leinster at the Aviva... well, maybe they'll lose to Glasgow or the Sharks/Bulls (in which case we could have another trip to SA to play the final...

If we manage to pull it off, it would be some incredible achievement...

Looking at the prices of the tickets for last Saturday's game and for the QF in Ulster you can see the great work MR did in pricing the tickets for our QF in the Avivia.

My tickets for the QF in the Aviva were €45

Similar ticker for the Leinster pool game were either €60 or €65

Tickets for the URC QF in Ravenhill are £40

I paid €73 (including ticketmaster fees) for 2 adults and a child for the Toulouse game... Honestly I think they had to price it that well to bring people to Dublin

Also my understanding is that the highest ranked team gets the home knockout game for the semi and the final. So if Edinburgh beat Stormers they will then travel for the semi.

    From here: https://www.unitedrugby.com/latest/about/competition-rules

Quarter-final 1 (QF1) – the Club ranked first in the Standing League Table will play at home against the Club ranked eighth in the Standing League Table. Quarter-final 2 (QF2) – the Club ranked second in the Standing League Table will play at home against the Club ranked seventh in the Standing League Table. Quarter-final 3 (QF3) – the Club ranked third in the Standing League Table will play at home against the Club ranked sixth in the Standing League Table. Quarter-final 4 (QF4)– the Club ranked fourth in the Standing League Table will play at home against the Club ranked fifth in the Standing League Table.

The winners of the quarter-final Matches will proceed to the semi-finals. The semi-finals will be knock-out, each played over one Match (subject to clause 5.1, below), and organised as follows:

Semi-final 1 (SF1) - the winner of QF1 versus the winner of QF4. The winner of QF1 will be the ‘home’ Club unless Pro Rugby Championship determines otherwise.

Semi-final 2 (SF2) - the winner of QF2 versus the winner of QF3. The winner of QF2 will be the ‘home’ Club unless Pro Rugby Championship determines otherwise.

Yeah.. Semi-finals location is decided on "Conkers rules" whereby if you beat a higher ranked team in the QF you get then home advantage for the semi , regardless of where you were in the final league table.

It reverts to league table standings for the Final.

Monday 6th June is not a bank holiday in NI. The game itself is actually on a bank holiday, the UK is getting Thurs 2nd and Fri 3rd as days off for the jubilee. So the game could actually have been played much earlier in the day, though I suspect TV is dictating the KO time here.

I suspect Ulster don't really care about away support since they'll easily sell this out and Friday nights are always best for Ulster.

Forgot about the different bank holidays. Yeah that makes sense. Was more a personal bellyache rather than expecting Ulster to change it if that's what suits them. Know there's a fair few games there on a Friday.
