Anyone got any information on what looks like a near miss incident earlier this afternoon. Ryanair flight Dub-Ams was on the runway as an Aer Lingus inbound from Lanzarote came in to land. Aer Lingus had a go around and Ryanair exited runway at same time before retrying couple minutes later.

Is this sort of thing a reasonably normal occurance or is it a biggie?

Very common at busy airports with tight spacing. Not a near miss or even close. ATC controller instructed the Ryanair to cancel take off clearance and instructed the Aer Lingus to go around. All done in a calm professional manner.

Why would they have deviated from the great circle on this route?

i spotted that planes were landing on the other runway earlier, but didn't think the wind was unusual enough to warrant it. was that related or unrelated to the incident?

edit: just read the date on the OP; never mind.

Drone activity closed the runway earlier today for half hour or so.

More favourable winds, slot avoidance/minimisation, congested airspace, standard published routes between city pairs, military airspace to name but a few.
