This sounds made up. He's commented many times on how he's settled in NZ, he has no interest in coming back to any Irish province.

Thought it was the best I've seen Munster play in a long time, and a couple of small factors could have swung it in their favour very easily.

Firstly, the Rory Arnold decision to me was a slam dunk red card. The tackle was a combination of late, tipped him beyond the horizontal, landed him on his head/neck area and then drove his shoulder into him on the deck. It was a nasty tackle, out to hurt the player, and is the sort that should rightly have seen a red card.

Secondly, if Peter O'Mahony didn't leave the game when he did I think Munster win the match. He was absolutely immense again when he was out there, and I think he'd potentially have managed the end game or extra time a bit better than they did.

Felt for Ben Healy, but hopefully it'll be the making of him.

Casey has shown some great form for me in recent weeks too. Looks rejuvenated. To me, he's playing an up-tempo game plan (similar to what JGP is doing for Leinster) that best suits his skillset, and is reminiscent of how he played on that 20's GS winning team. He's not trying to be Conor Murray. It's really encouraging to see his development too.

Kendellen is a serious player, and Ahern has to tour in the summer. Weirdly, even though it cost them this time around, some of those injuries might be a benefit for Munster long term because of the game time and development opportunities it's afforded some of these young forwards.

Agree with a lot of what you say here but I'm curious, what makes you think Casey was found wanting. I thought he was pretty good when he came on.

Listening to Quinny on off the ball and he did put things into context a bit, Munster missing Kilcoyne, Beirne, Snyman, Conway and Coombes without having the depth of a team like Toulouse changes the profile of the game entirely. When Ireland lost O'Connell, Sexton, O'Brien, O'Mahony before the Argentina game in the 2015 RWC I often felt that the significance of that was lost in terms of how the game was discussed posthumously.

I don't think any more effort was required to win at the weekend but a bit more savvy would have gone a long way when Toulouse we're looking ropey. I'm not mad on the talk about it being a heroic loss, yes - it was a massive and memorable game and the atmosphere outshone any of the other weekends fixtures, but Munster could have won that and a lack of patience in extra time was the big difference in that regards.

Am I right in saying that's the first time a game has gone to kicks since Cardiff Leicester? The new format is fairer but possibly less interesting.

Slight element of 'shiny new toy' about Casey earlier in the season but he's been terrific the last few months. Time in Ireland camp obviously brought him on a good deal.

Casey is superb, with still more to learn. I think he'll be phenomenal in a couple of years.

Casey has had a wonderful season. He wasn't as effective against Toulouse purely because everyone else around him was bolloxed when he came on. Players were half walking to get in the defensive line owing to the shift they'd put in. This was even more evident in extra time and it didn't lend itself to a high tempo attacking game.

He's renewed for next year. With Ryan on the way to Wasps. I think....

I'm surprised archer was renewed and Ryan left go... must be cheaper and Ryan wanted a longer contract.... at least he got a few years with WASPS..

Andi Kyriacou will join Graham Rowntree’s coaching team as Forwards Coach from the beginning of the 2022/23 season after signing a two-year deal with the province.

Just Leamy left to be confirmed now.

So iirc, Rowntree and Kyriacou get two year deals while Mike gets three, I suppose the 3yr deal was to get Mike home whereas the lads were here already.

i thought Leamy already had a contract signed?

Not announced by Munster but widely rumoured that he's coming

Matt Williams calling Munster tactically inept, saying they kicked too much and should have ran it more like the break Farrell made for Haley's try.

Which came on the 2nd phase after Zebo claimed a box kick... hmmm....

It's Matt Williams. There's a reason he's no longer coaching.

True enough. I really like Joe Molloy, think he's a quality presenter but the rest of them can be painful at times.

    Matt Williams, Enough Said.

He's reason enough to switch channel or mute regardless what outlet he's on

    He's right though.

His point was that when playing a team with a big heavy pack and injuries in the backline, you should keep the ball in hand and run them ragged. Instead Munster just kept on kicking it.

His point was basically Munster could and should have won with a better tactical plan, and he's dead right.

Sure, but he's not wrong on this occasion. Toulouse were out on their feet from 50 min in. Kicking the ball so much from that point made no sense.

    Bit of a surprise.....

It was mooted a few weeks ago. He apparently had a release clause in his Biarritz contract if they got relegated.

I presume the delay in announcing Leamy is purely media driven for weekly positive coverage?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 882 ✭✭✭Lsdrugbyfan

probably doesnt want to distract from his current job getting leinster ready for a semi final in europe.

What today shows is how far we are behind Leinster and it's a gap I don't see them closing for years unfortunately.....they are incredible

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 13,058 ✭✭✭✭AbusesToilets

I don't know about that. If you think to how much Leinster improved under Schmidt, in a relatively short time, it's very doable. There's a talent deficit in certain positions, but the greatest deficiency is the lack of fluency on the ball in the forwards.

The lack of handling ability in Munsters forwards is definitely an issue. That can be upskilled, however. But the biggest issue I see is Munsters lack of athleticism in the front 5 and especially the lack of it in the front row. There just aren't enough effective carriers in there.
