Are Arcade Fire expected to be a sell out.. Hmm we'll see.

Placebo haven't sold out and they are better and more popular than Arcade Tap Water 💦

Got the presale link but no code. Hopefully that works ok but sure we'll see in the morning.

Yup and I wouldn't be surprised if they do two nights. I like placebo but they are nowhere as big as AF

Arcade Fire peaked between 2007 - 2010 and have been stagnant ever since. Placebo are still making career defining albums since forming in 1994. Placebo's two biggest hits are more popular than anything Fire ever out and they have sold more albums to boot.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,946 ✭✭✭✭hynesie08

Placebo had one great album, 2 decent albums and the rest has been a poor parody of what came before it, There's a reason they're struggling to shift tickets for the 3arena, It's because they're an olympia sized band at best.

    And I like placebo.

Finally someone's definitively put to bed that age old debate of who's more popular between Arcade Fire and Placebo!

    Seriously, who gives a ****?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,714 ✭✭✭✭The Nal

    Yeah ridiculous conversation.

I mean, Arcade Fire peaked in 2005.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,274 ✭✭✭BruteStock

The reason for that is because the gig is ages away in December. I looked again and there's not much tickets left. Most of their 15 date tour in the UK is sold out. Arcade Fire will sell out because they have only 6 dates across Ireland and UK. Lets wait and see if AF sells out tomorrow.

You do ,hence the engagement. Or do you have nothing better to do with your life than comment on topics you dgaf about?

If I can remember correctly Arcade Fire struggled to sell out the last time they played the 3Arena so 2 nights might be a stretch for them.

I thought they did 2 nights last time round no? Anyway I can't wait. Hoping it's another "in the round" setup. It was phenomenal last time. Definitely one of the best live acts for me but i am biased as they're the band that probably most vividly remind me of massive moments in my life - and i wasn't at the EP gig that half the country was at :) What more do you want from music than that 😁

I've seen Arcade Fire several times and the 'in the round' gig was by far the worst performance I've seen. Win was pissed off that someone knocked his hat while walking through the crowd and the crowd were very chatty during the one or two quiet songs.

Still, delighted I got tickets in the presale and hoping for a great gig!

Two very good bands in my opinion.

Don't know why there such a passionate debate about which is better. I don't think they sound anything alike. It's not like they are battling for a patch within the same music genre.

Why did the poster bring Placebo into the mix at all. What's the point?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,274 ✭✭✭BruteStock

I merely doubted the bands ability to insta sell out three arena. I was told it would be a certainty and I point out how Placebo (a better band imo) had not sold out three arena. Its my belief that fires popularity is over inflated by their constant headlining slots at festivals. We will see how they fare on their own tomorrow 🙂

Maybe Placebo and Arcade Fire should play the 'point' together, and then it would sell out?

But who would headline ................. 😉

Arcade are using the full setup, placebo are not, so it's not even a like for like comparison.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,274 ✭✭✭BruteStock

Placebo are a pretty small unit and deliver a phenomenal live show. Tickets aren't a rip off either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 16,401 ✭✭✭✭Arghus

I'm not going to debate who of the two is "better."

But in terms of popularity, Arcade Fire are absolutely a bigger and more popular band than Placebo. Their last three albums have all gone straight to number one here, in the uk and the us. It's borderline delusional to claim that Placebo are more popular.

0-34 in These gigs agree on Arcade Fire

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,946 ✭✭✭✭hynesie08

No, I meant they're not using the full capacity of the 3 arena, Arcade fire are.

Because tickets for the upper tier aren't on sale, which means a curtain job.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 991 ✭✭✭Duffy98

None of the top tiers look to be available to purchase but the decent tier seating A-G are.

When you book tickets for arcade fire both rows of tiered seating are available, thats how you know if one act is using the whole arena or not.

Nowadays live nation throw any act in the 3Arena and judging by the size of the act the top tiers are either curtained off or not.

Arcade fire announced a show 3 months away and they'll sell pretty well. That placebo show was announced months ago and you can still get tickets in decent seats and even standing thats the difference between the two, also i would imagine Arcade Fire's music has a wider appeal than Placebo.

Nowadays its not about who the better artist is that decides what fills an arena its all about commercial appeal / radio plays etc. Theres bands that can only fill the olympia that may be objectively better than another band that fills the 3Arena but thats how it is, stop complaining people like what they like

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,274 ✭✭✭BruteStock

Not delusional at all because you're not allowing for circumstances.

For example placebo's brilliant new album was on track to reach #1 but it couldnt get here because they were up against Mick Booblay and Machine Gun Kelly. Fires new is on track to reach #1 because the competition is much lower - sigrid and Soft Cell.

Furthermore, the music scene was stacked, loaded and at an all time high when placebo released their first 4 albums. The talent pool for music was far deeper at that point in time. Would Fire have reached #1 back then? Maybe, maybe not. I know at at the late 90s / early 00s Placebo had commercial hits that were bigger than any hit released by Fire.

Oh and when Fire broke through, placebo had hit a major slump in their career. So if your talking about certain time periods then yeah but overall no

Look, like I said, I'm not going to going to get into the argument about which of the two bands are better, because that's all very highly subjective and there's no end to it.

But, at this present moment in time, Arcade Fire sell more records, sell more tickets and are a bigger draw generally than Placebo. That's a fact, whether they would have hypothetically been as successful in an earlier time is irrelevant to the question about which band is more popular right now. If that's something you don't agree with, I can't say much more to you on the matter tbh. There won't be many - if any - on here that would share your opinion.

Mind you, I can see their - AF's - appeal wavering as the years go on and the mediocre albums pile up. And I do respect Placebo for keeping the show on the road for a long while and they've always maintained a healthy fanbase.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,274 ✭✭✭BruteStock

I respect your argument as an opinion, but not as a fact. I'll monitor the ticket sales in the upcoming days, if I'm wrong I'm wrong.
