Cash gift for foreign wedding?

I have a mates wedding coming up soon. Its a foreign wedding. What's the done thing for presents? Do people give cash gifts for foreign weddings considering the cost of travelling to be there. It's costing nearly 1000 euro for flights and accommodation for my partner and I. plus on top of that I had to buy new shoes,shirt, tie and trousers. I don't want to be the only couple not giving a gift but it's costing a lot to attend.

Well if it's a cost thing just refuse, I'm sure the person involved does not expect that everyone will come and they will understand the cost issue.

If you are going then, the best approach is to find out what is the custom in the country you are going to and also may be talk to someone else that is going to see what they are doing.

For instance here in Switzerland expensive gifts are frowned up on and you are expected to bring a gift that you have actually made yourself!

What's the reasoning it's foreign, is it to cut the cost of wedding on the couple or is it because one of the couple is from that area?

If you know any of the other guests well why not ask them what they're planning to give.

No 2 ways about it.....its a sticky wicket all right. 2018 my Goddaughter got hitched ..... luckily it was in Lanzarote & Mrs Mc Carthy & I were able to 'work' in a nice holiday. Here's the thing though.....the invite, considering the cost/ location, clearly said " you presence would be our present " which I thought was a really nice touch....no pressure...... being my FAVOURITE ( only) godchild I still seen them right but that was my choice

As someone who had a foreign wedding, no gift was expected but we did say so beforehand. We also covered accommodation for the night of the shindig but we did drag them up into a Spanish mountain range so it's the least we could do

I got married abroad in 2018 and had a wedding of 85 people and expected absolutely no gifts from anyone because I understood there was already so much expenditure put upon people who decided they will come out

some people gave gifts and some people didn't and I didn't think any different

I greatly appreciated their presence and cost incurred in coming plus annual leave time taken and that is the honest truth,

I wouldn't stress about it

If you can't afford it or simply don't want to after the cost incurred already , then don't gift

Any friend who thinks ill of this after travelling abroad for them isn't worth it

Nah its not tbh , there is less social pressure to give the same level of gift. People who get married abroad know this. I mean if people can afford it then why not give the same but its not the same as a wedding at home.

I was at one in Portugal a couple of weeks ago and gave 100 euros, everyone else seemed to be giving cards too so I would imagine it is as normal.

€500 would be a round number, disagree away all ye like and throw what ever toys ye have left in the cot but the reality is this. End of story.

What i have done last 10 years is for wedding gifts is i get €100 notes... any wedding 2... any family min 3... most i ever gave 5 (one note) only 2 times...
