Customs assisting AGS at checkpoints.

Hi all, I just saw a post on Facebook from the Sligo/Leitrim Garda Facebook page.

It appears that Customs are assisting AGS with checkpoints. Mandatory Intoxicant Testing (MIT) checkpoints in this particular case. I find this extremely interesting. What exactly is Customs' role/responsibility in these checkpoints? How long has this been going on and why have customs been deployed with the AGS?

Customs often do joint stops with Gardai. They check on things like red diesel use, cars with foreign registrations (ie VRT not paid) etc.

As above, and Social Welfare/Revenue will sometimes be present also on multi-agency super-checkpoints.

Ah, I see. I assumed wrong. I thought customs were doing the intoxicant testing, hence my surprise. The post didn't specify exactly what customs were doing. My mistake.

Maybe they are dipping cars now.

I have a few mates whgo have been driving with the green diesel for donkeys years now.

The last time i heard of anyone being dipped was 30 years ago, so the chances of it are almost non existant.

They test the exhaust now, as lorries had fake diesel tanks with real tank embedded inside or elsewhere. If you dio the tank it came up as genuine fuel.

They tend to target "green" diesel to farm events such as ploughing championships where lots of farmers would be present. Lots of people still caught, but going electric vehicle would probably save you more.

It depends on your location, These checkpoints although stopped during the pandemic are happening all the time
