Pretty damn good and ok are leagues below Katie

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 562 ✭✭✭Larsso30

Exactly, pretty damn good isn't in same planet as what Katie has achieved.

I really don't think some people understand just what she accomplished Saturday night. She has taken herself to superstardom, first ballot Hall of famer a legacy untouched or matched. Pretty good doesn't cover it, not close.

I’m well aware of his role and significance in all this, and it is essential to sport/entertainment that people like Hearn are involved. They get things done.

I just really got a sense/vibe off him in his interview that he was all about squeezing more.

Anyway, Katie is her own person. She’s of sound mind, and if she wants more in her head and heart, that is her right.

Id just personally prefer if she went out right at the top, which is where she is at right now.

This was exactly my point. Greed and squeezing..

Katie is well off. Financially secure, set for life, not in need of money; and not a person I would think as being driven by money.

Hearn is minted, I honestly get sense the stuff with Katie is more than just money to him. The bet with Paul didn't happen there is no million quid.

I get Katie going out on top I do, just not sure if she ready for life with no boxing. I always think froch for all his faults done it right and retired at right time, wish more would follow suit.

Horse racing isnt a sport. A sport must rely on you not been on the best horse

Sonia never won an Olympic medal and has nowhere as many world or european medals. Then didnt go on to be undisputed world champ in essentially another sport

Add to that, how many caps for Ireland football does Katie have??

    Horse racing is sport:

I think you’re really underestimating the brilliance/skills/bravery of jockeys, and more so jump jockeys. Blackmore is a hell of a sports person!

of course, horses play their part. But jockeys are very crucial in how horses play their part!

Blackmore, being female and not as physically equipped or as strong as her male counterparts, makes her achievements even more great.

O’Sullivan does have an Olympic medal. She has 3 world gold and 3 European golds. She’d have had more too if Europeans weren’t every 4 years when she was running.

FWIW I might have been the first person to say boxing is a minority sport (that attracts a bandwagon) and I’ll stand by that. So is Athletics. I was talking in an Irish context and I’ll say it again; the general Irish sporting fan couldn’t name 10 boxers (or 10 track and field athletes).

Anyone who’s been to the Stadium to see the elite senior finals will tell you it’s mostly friends and family at it. Same applies to the national championships in pretty much every sport here.

That it’s a historic sport isn’t in question. That it has passionate fans all over the world isn’t in question.

As individual sports go, boxing in Ireland is not a minority sport. Every county has clubs. All Ireland sport with a large participation.

dozens and dozens clubs in Dublin alone

Roy Keane, Liam Brady, Ronnie Delany, Sonia O'Sullivan, Stephen Roche, Sean Kelly, Michelle Smith, Steve Collins all achieved at the highest levels of sports with participation rates and levels of professionalism that dwarf women's boxing.

If you include athletes from the North (I do), then George Best and Carl Frampton are also in that group.

Boxing is our most successful Olympic sport by a county mile

I'm going to hazard a guess you don't watch women's boxing as you are doing it a massive disservice, it's never been better than it is right now. And the single greatest difference to the men's is there's no politics, no **** around the best fight the very best hence why I rate Katie's achievements do highly.

Michelle Smith is a drugs cheat and Frampton doesn't come close to Katie's achievements imo, sonia osullivan either

Kean and Brady and the cyclists have a case, agreed. I love Steve Collins he was my boxing idol as a kid but I could pick holes in his resume (if I wasn't such a fan that is) 😂

I may have missed a joke here but boxing is most definitely Ireland’s most successful Olympic sport

Anyone else find Chris Mannix on commentary very biased toward Serrano?

Enthusiastically praising anything she landed and barely acknowledging Taylor's punches.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,325 ✭✭✭cuttingtimber22

Throw in Brian O’Driscoll who was genuinely world class and Sexton is up there. In boxing we also have Barry McGuigan. In golf we have Rory, Padraig, Lowry and Clark. I am not sure we can say one person is the best. We are privileged to be from a small island to have had such superstars.

It may be the best it's been, but that doesn't make the talent pool good. Taking the boxrec rankings for Katie's division, there are 120 pro fighters in total and you don't need to go far down the rankings to find fighters with losing records or with less than 5 fights in total.

It's also worth noting that Taylor's best wins prior to Saturday were against a woman with a day job, and in the case of the first of those fights with Persoon, it's being charitable in the extreme to call that a "win".

I don't like being the party pooper, and think when you add up the gold medal with the pro career and the soccer, Katie has had an amazing career in sport, but when people are comparing her to Ali and Frazier, and putting her down as Ireland's greatest sportsperson, I think it's important to put things in a bit of perspective.

Mannix was bad, but Jessica MacAskill was diabolical. You would think Taylor didn't land a single shot by the way she was going on.

    I never ebs

Don't think anyone has compared her to Ali or Joe what they have compared is that fight in msg which Ron katz and bunce etc have all said is up there with some of the best that venue has ever seen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 562 ✭✭✭Larsso30

And please don't quite boxrec to tell me how good or bad Katie's wins. Go watch them and her opponents first please.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,643 ✭✭✭Pauliedragon

Are these debates really necessary? Why not just enjoy Taylors achievements and leave it at that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,237 ✭✭✭✭normanoffside

Mannix wasn't commentating but was scoring. The Whole US Dazn commentary team was very pro Serrano and even they scored it a draw in the end.

Cross country running is not an Olympic sport.

Taylor boxed the ears off her. She hasn't let it go.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,727 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

Yeah. Relatively speaking we’ve had some excellent boxers

The problem is that not enough people care about it outside of the Olympic Games. Joe Ward and Jason Quigley are 2 of only 3 Irishmen to reach the world championship finals (Ward twice) and most sports fans couldn’t tell you a single thing about them

Same applies for all Olympic sports too btw. It’s a shame

Haha Michelle Smith, great analysis, thanks for the laugh...

She did but **** me that was a tough fight especially so early in Katie's career, mccaskill was never meant to be that good. Tough fucker. A rematch I really hope Katie never takes.

People genuinely under estimate the sheer pressure Katie performs under. The expectation people have for her. It's enough to make many crack which is why I rate her achievements so highly.

Most Irish sports stars over achieve so don't perform under close to same level of pressure, Katie has had serious expectation on her time after time.
