Getting to Cinque Terre

    Hi Guys,

    I'm looking at going to Cinque Terre in Italy late summer and was wondering the best way to get there (nearest airport) also stops etc and public transport. Not renting a car.

    Anyone have any tips in terms of visiting the villages, getting around the area, can you trek all of them in one day?

    From Spezia , a nearby largish town, there is a train service to CT

    or a nicer way to get there is by boat/ferry from Spezia to CT.

    You buy a one day ticket for the boat, and hop on off at each on the CT villages


    If using public transport from an airport , might be easier to get transport to La Spezia,base yourself there , and from there use the boat or train to CT


    Trekking , a few years back a lot of the cliff paths were closed due to erosion, not sure if this is still the case

    Been there twice and flew Ryanair to Pisa both times and got the train up. All very easy, trains are regular and journey time's round an 1 hour 20 from what I recall.

    We stayed in the larger town Levanto, north of the CT first time and then in Monterosso 2nd time. It's very easy to move up and down along the coast by train.

    Yeah you can trek all five in one day and we did but doesn't leave much time for looking round and enjoying the villages. As mentioned above some of trails can be closed at times due to erosion, think there is information about this on the CT national park official website.

    If you're into walking, there are loads of other trails in the area which are less crowded and just as nice, would recommend Levanto to Monterosso for lovely views down onto the CT villages.
