I don't have the budget for what I want this year so just pricing around.

If I was to do anything this year it would be a SaaS (depending on them being available) . If not, a full on diy next year and buy parts as I go.

Well that settles it for me then : )

Observing the path of the sun, I see that my chimney casts a '7 to 9 o'clock shadow' on the roof when the sun is in the south from 10am to midday this time of year - meaning that the area of the proposed 4 panels (2x2) of 10 panels that I'd fit on the front roof would be useless. So its adding to the decision to go a ground mounted array next year.

Don't forget that "solar noon" is about 1:30pm this time of year (as the hour goes forward in summer and of course we're a little west of Greenwich London). So if you only have shading until midday, the bulk of your day you would still have decent production on those panels. The details of course would depend on factors such as time of year etc, but you can install optimisers on the panels if needed.....

Ground mounts (typically) are much expensive, so 4-5 optimisers at €50 each might be a better solution. Really though it depends on your specifics and it's difficult to know without eyeballing it

Guys I’d love to do diy solar panels. I have a south facing roof .

would anyone know if I did the install myself , where would I find an seai electrician to do the electrical end and sign it off.

there’s no way I’m going to pay the price that the companies are charging, it’s extortionate and I know a company where I can buy all the gear wholesale

    thanks

You definitely won't get any seai electrician to sign it off as they make too much profit from their seal listing . But you should be able to get a reci electrician no problem to do the final connection of your diy install to consumer unit

I thought it had to be signed off by an seai guy . Is that not right ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,323 ✭✭✭irishchris

For grant yes otherwise no a reci electrician will do.

You won't get an seai installer that will sign off on a diy install as profit margin is what they care about

For the grant to be paid there is a requirement for photos to be taken at various stages of the installation.

You can't just get a RECI to sign off at the very end and avail of grant.

I don’t care about the grant because I will save a lot more buying the stuff wholesale and doing it that way . I thought it had to be a seai electrician that had to connect it to the grid. I’ll ring a reci and see what they tell me thanks

@Pataman Thinking of doing the same and would be very interested in how you got on with customs(delivery to Ireland etc), the agent and the installation? Thanks!

    What's a reci

DIY is an option I would like to go down, I can fit the panels easily myself and my best mate is a reci certified electrical so he can help me wire it

Not looking to be spoon fed info so if there's any threads on here that would help with the below please feel free to let me know but essentially don't know where to start. I know you need panels and inverter and then I assume battery to store the electricity, how does fuseboard know to use the solar and then when the battery is run down use the grid? Is it hooked up so it can be fed back to the grid if there is excess power generated?

The inverer is wired to a CT Clamp that goes on tails feed into the house, it can then "sense" when electricity is being exported/imported and then divert to/feed in from the battery

HI. All sorted and now have nearly 6kw. The most I get at any one time is over 4kw. Customs agent handles everything, delivered to my door

    Hi All

i have a Huawei SUN2000 5 KTL L1 surplus to requirement after my diy install. It’s still in the original sealed box. Where would the best place be to advertise it for sale. VAT invoice available.

Decided to go with a different setup.

Put it up on the solar quotes thread and you should get interest. A few there were getting Huawei stuff so might be interested. Check with Mods to be sure your allowed first.

Are people not worried when they buy huawei gear that the chinese will be able to log in and f&ck with the grid? obviously with a small install base they won't be able to do much but imagine if there were 100s of 1000s of huawei/solis inverters and some guy from the PLA logs in and starts injecting funky signals into the grid

How is this setup going for you?

What was customs total? VAT + handling or how does it break if more than that?

What suppliers are people using now? I'm planning an upgrade and want to pick up a few bits myself mostly mounting system and isolators.

I have my panels plus Sunsynk inverter from Kellihers and 20kwh LFP batteries (Aliexpress) so just waiting for install now. My RECI is also registered with SEAI for grant.

Question: if I wanted that RECI to do more grant work at another property to include work by a registered gas installer. Does the RGI have to be SEAI approved or can he work under the RECI to get a grant on both fronts using one invoice?

The reci is registered for the solar panel install.

What grant are you going for the other property, solar pv?

The RGI, would have nothing to do with the solar install...

Combi gas boiler in the other house. I don't know too many RGI's whereas the RECI has been with me for ages.

Afaik there aren’t grants for gas boilers. New gas and oil installs are going to be going ‘end of life’ in not many years from now most likely. There’s grants for replacing them with electrical heatpumps. Or heating controls. Check what’s available here: SEAI Grants: Home Improvement, Business, EV & More | SEAI

You’ll only get the solar grant if you apply on that site with a registered installer (and that’s not a huge list). Supposed to apply before the work commences.

    Would also like an update.

Coming to stage where I need to order panels (30) and thinking about china.

Myself and @Big Lar recently bought a pallet of 36 panels from Elerix in Prague. 410w panels worked out at circa €125 a piece incl. VAT delivered. Took about a week to get here.

Donkey of a courier turned up in an artic with no moffett. Not sure how he thought we were going to lift an 800kg pallet off the lorry. Anyway got sorted in the end.

1 panel was smashed. Don't know when or how it happened but Elerix refunded the cost of the panel without any quibbles (they also offered to send a replacement).

I have yet to mount mine but @Big Lars are up and running.

In the last year I purchased some panels and got them from Poland, the prices were much better than here. Used two different sellers.

On Sklep Soltech they currently have 400w panels for €92. I used them last year and the shipping per pallet was €295.

If the shipping is still similar it would be around €102 per panel delivered and including VAT.

But also like @ColemanY2K the driver turned up without any way to get them off the truck so they came off one at a time.
