Car broke down start of covid, never marked it off the road so in arrears. Refund?

Hello all,

Start of covid my car packed it in, I worked from home then so didn't need it anymore so it's been sitting in the driveway since then. I never marked it off the road, which was stupid, I know.

Got a new car this week, and when trying to register it I see I've got two years of motor tax to pay for the car that's been off the road, which in not disputing tbh, my mistake, bitter pill all the same.

I saw in this link though that there are circumstances where refunds are allowed, my eyes focused on this

"The vehicle has not been taken out or used in a public place at any time since the issue of the current disc"

Long shot, but if I pay the two years I owe, can I try to claim a refund? I doubt it but thought I'd ask.

The car was insured over the last two years. Reason was I always intended on getting a replacement car or fixing my current one, so thought I'd keep the insurance going, another silly move in hindsight.

What do you intend to do with the old car? You can transfer it to a new owner and the arrears disappear, so if you're looking at selling or similar, so long as you don't drive it in the meantime that may be your easiest way out.

You're no longer liable for the arrears once ownership of that car changes. I have no idea what gave you the idea that you have to pay the arrears before you register the new car. Which the dealership should be doing for you, btw. Can you give a bit more info on what exactly you mean about "registering" the new car???

OP - 'Sell' on the car (e.g. change ownership) = No back tax owed on the car.

Do not pay it & then look for a refund...lol

Brain fart by me, I went onto motortax.ie last night to see what I need to do (haven't collected the new car yet) and entered my details (key thing I missed is the details I entered were for my old car, not anything about myself) and I was presented with the bill. Thought I had to transfer to a new car through that account (forgetting I had logged in with my old car's details and assuming it was an account tracking me. It's the car's account, not mine right?).

This makes more sense now, I just need the VRC of the new car and I can proceed from there. Can you tell this is my first time?

So I'm just going to ring one of the scrap merchants to pick up the old car, and they'll bin it, I won't pay the arrears owed.
