Workers to get five days’ leave to care for sick child or relative

A society that demands people choose between financially supporting themselves and supporting their sick relative is not a compassionate society.

This is due to the EU Work Life Balance directive. It is a positive thing, 5 days with short notice is good but would be eaten up very quickly by an illness or a few appointments.

Also, there is only the right to request flexible working arrangements. Employers will easily be able to get around this.

Our right to request remote work legislation in its current form is also a load of rubbish with 13 catch all reasons allowing an employer to refuse a request.

Maybe people are thinking of how it would apply in the real world. Many people have experience in their own families or circle of friends where someone can require care quite suddenly due to illness. Personally know of a few people given a terminal diagnosis and lived less then 6 months.

This is better then what is currently in place but we have to remember some people have fantastic accommodating employers and others have employers who will never be flexible.

That’s applying it more to their own personal circumstances than applying the proposed legislation in the real world. It’s nothing more than trying to find fault with what is being proposed by presenting all sorts of hypothetical scenarios.

There will undoubtedly be plenty of employees too who cannot afford to take unpaid leave, and there will be plenty of employers who cannot afford to pay paid leave, or may be unable to accommodate employees requests for leave, depending upon the nature of the business’ activities.

There are benefits to the proposed legislation for some people, and there are negative implications for others, and some people won’t be affected by it at all.
