Dublin Airport Mayhem

I flew back to Ireland recently and going back to Singapore was utterly chaotic.

I flew Dublin to Copenhagen (I left the airport as I had an 8 hour connection) and going back through was a breeze compared to Dublin. Might fly home through Shannon next time. Dublin and Shannon are equal distances from my family home.

Did anyone use Aerlingus evening before bag drop?

We're on a 07am ish flight on Tuesday and thinking of driving the evening before (16:00-20:00) in order to drop the carry on 10k (going to Spain, no checked in big bags).

Not sure if it's even possible or worth it tbh. It's a bit of a trek for us but so worried about issues in the am, even if we were to be there for 4am.

I know people get short queues on later flights but this seems to be the busiest time of day.

We did it Friday evening for a 7:40am Saturday flight. Took about 30 minutes at check in (couldn’t do it online).

Saturday at 4:30 we took 35 minutes going through security. As posted earlier queues for check in were every long that morning so I’m glad we went the night before

Dublin Airport needs a rethink generally. Flying out of comparable sized airports like Copenhagen, Oslo or Helsinki is so much more comfortable from arrival at airport doors to stepping on the plane. Helsinki Airport in particular is a dream.

Shannon and Cork could do some heavy lifting. But it appears policy is to make Dublin the only airport of any importance in the country.

Copenhagen airport is ran and designed with the primary concerns, comfort and wellbeing of the customer in mind, it really is fabulous…whereas Dublin’s primary concern is not facilitating passengers or their wellbeing or comforts, it’s facilitating vendors / retailers…$$$

look at the DAA lounges as a prime example…ughhhh..a two drink maximum although I’m not sure how rigorously that is enforced…and limited snacks and food…

CPH ok it’s about 9 years ago since I was there last but it had actually hot food, sausages, bacon, scrambled egg, hash browns, mini burgers, draught beers as well as bottled.

Strumms if you’ll pardon me for saying, Copenhagen lounges are not used to dealing with Pat.

I mean no need to limit drinks as you will have civilised travelers who can limit themselves rather than horsing into as much as they can swill before boarding their flight.

Different cultures, different standards Mr S.

Pat i am just curious... Airline advised arrive 2 hrs before 3.55 and you arrive at 3.30... would you have been ok if you arrived at the time suggested by KLM... also would they be able to guarantee you get on flight if you fallowed said advise... there is a grey area here between Airlines and Airport management...

    Report from Friday.

Arrived red car park 3.30am, in T1 15 minutes later. Had fast track with Ryanair, didn't open until 4 but got through in half an hour. Regular queue took friends 75 minutes.

Beyond security, queues for everything. Joined one, wanted a coffee - left queue after 45 minutes.

Flying next Saturday at 2pm from terminal 1 - I have one 20kg bag to check in.

At what time should we be at the airport - will Ryanair will let us know in separate e-mail or how is it with them now?

If you got there for 8 I think you should be fine. It'll be extra busy over the Easter weekend.

Does Ryanair have their own fast track or is this the DAA fast track? I have been through the DAA fast track before but never knew about a Ryanair separate fast track?

DAA completely run security.. Airlines sell fast track as an add-on pretty much the same as buying seats priority boarding etc...They will give DAA whatever fee they have agreed... i expect airlines get a bit of a discount...

Yeah, to be safe that's what I would recommend

Think that is a little early but yes if you want no stress then that would even be a better time to get there

Please do not allow 1hr queuing for check-in and security check to become something to be proud of.

It seems to me that the fact that DAA cannot give a time for the different services is adding to the problem... if people knew it would say for arguement sake 1 hour they could plan... a person passing through security several hours before and hanging around airside is not going to help the situation. Having people around the Airport for 6/8 hours is not going to help anyone...

I find it disturbing that the security personnel are being paid little more than minimum wage and are expected to be available to work 40 hours but guaranteed only 20. What does this say about how seriously security is being taken? I would have considered it an important and skilled job and surprised when I saw the wages and conditions offered.

Race to the bottom P&O Ireland style... I wonder what were the people who were made redundant were getting paid... i asked here before but if it was said i missed it...

Also the DAA wanted the employees who just left to return to work... i wonder what terms they were being offered... I also read that they were hiring students for part time work... I would think that Airport security should be a career and maybe employee students who intent making a career in aviation field when college done...

I heard one condescending frogger here saying he went to college for years so he would not be working security for €14 an hour..

I just tried to book DAA Car park, and unfortunately Red & Blue are both sold out for the dates I need (later this week). Does anyone know if they usually release some more spaces closer to the dates? Bit of a pickle now, as most Hotel car parks are fully booked as well.

Is there any web page where you can check how it looks like NOW at the airport - or it is not allowed for security reasons? Or www where you can check waiting time etc?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 807 ✭✭✭breeno

When people reference check in queues in T1 would that include the automated Ryanair bag drop kiosks in zone 13 or are they reasonably OK to/through get to still?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,187 ✭✭✭loki7777

That's the same thing i'm wonder about - because now i read on irish mirror www that people were waiting 1,5 for all the things to be done and then another 2h just for the flight or more so being 6-8h earlier makes no sens.

DAA have "temporarily" stopped selling fast track but I was still able to add it via my Ryanair booking.

No there is usually not a big queue for Ryanair self service at all. The bag drop off is 4hours prior to flight so all good there. The check-in desks for BA,AF,KLM,SAS etc are the ones who only open 2 hours before the flight.

I'm not proud of anything. All I'm saying is how long it took me. And to add,it would have taken me a shorter amount of time to check-in if people from a flight 4 hours later were not in the same queue. These people were bumped to the back of the queue when they arrived at the check-in desk.

had the same issue a few weeks ago, ended up using a park and ride and then getting the bus to the airport,

So was I, though I booked with the thought in mind that it wouldn't surprise me if Ryanair are selling something they don't have.

Are the fast track doors still operating, even? I thought I'd heard they'd put all the staff on the normal security lanes, so everyone is in the same queue. Might have imagined that though.
