I watch about 2 or 3 episodes and thought it was ok, a bit of light fluff. Never bothered finishing it

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,270 ✭✭✭Caquas

The Father is a deeply moving story about an issue which affects very many families but which rarely features in films. I have never seen this theme handled more humanely.

Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Coleman are tremendous as father/daughter struggling with his dementia. Hopkins deservedly won the Best Actor Oscar last year for his performance (while tucked up in bed in Wales!). Coleman is marvellous as his middle-aged daughter whose marriage is cracking under the strain of caring for her cantankerous and increasingly disoriented father. (She is wasted on that Lost Child mish-mash which only the critics and pseudos can love.).

A brilliant script makes The Father lively and engaging, never mawkish, but it is not an easy watch. Set design and cinematography subtly draw you into his world and its confusions.

    Five stars!

I watched 2 very different but very enjoyable films on Prime today.

First was The Surprise, a Dutch film, which surprisingly was partly filmed here in Ireland. It's a slightly dark rom-com, I guess, but there's some surprises in there too. I saw it described as absurdist humour earlier, which might be more accurate than calling it a rom-com. It's funny, charming, sweet, kind of sad, and really very enjoyable.

Then I watched Blue My Mind, which is a terrible title, but a great film. Its billed as coming of age mixed with body horror, which is kind of accurate but doesn't paint the whole picture. I'm told the trailer spoils the whole film so I'd go in blind if you fancy watching it. It's a Swiss film, about Mia, a 15 year old girl who starts at a new school just as puberty hits and she finds herself going through some major changes. Probably not for everyone, there's some gore, I guess, but not too much.

It is terrific, Jean Smart is brilliant in it. Wonder why it took so long to come to tv/streaming here.

  • Registered Users Posts: 501 ✭✭✭Full_Circle_81

Its so bizarre to see which shows Sky cherry pick from HBO to air.......

Prefer to see it on Prime though, much better streaming quality!

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,340 ✭✭✭S.M.B.

I don't mind when Sky pick them up as it usually means little to no wait. I'd love to know their thought process though.

Hacks has yet to appear. Not sure what time amazon add content. Others are enquiring about it in the announcement tweet from yesterday which is where I spotted it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 363 ✭✭shanmo

I was just coming on to ask if Hacks is showing for anyone else. Hope it isn't just released for UK viewers.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 23,913 Mod ✭✭✭✭TICKLE_ME_ELMO

Hacks isn't listed on JustWatch under todays new additions either 😕

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,340 ✭✭✭S.M.B.

It is now available for me here in the UK. It's also being heavily promoted within the user interface which I wasn't expecting.

If it's Prime UK only I'll be raging!

Start to rage then - it's only in the UK! One Tweet I saw said we didn't get it, according to Amazon customer support, because of Brexit although I see another saying we will be getting it soon. We'll see (or not).

  • Registered Users Posts: 501 ✭✭✭Full_Circle_81

Blast. I figured their days of UK vs Ireland content had more or less finished, at least in regards to new shows/movies.

Maybe RTE have it pencilled in sometime over the coming year(s)........

Amazon Prime Video adding all 25 Bond movies: Here's when you can stream 007

    from 15 April

They will be available for a "limited time"

One good benefit of Prime membership is the discount you get on Amazon Music Unlimited. The quality is far superior to that you get with Spotify, but they could do with investing a bit more into their app, Spotify's wins hands down on that.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 23,913 Mod ✭✭✭✭TICKLE_ME_ELMO

Apparently they're not on Prime in Ireland until May.

Wonder what other MGM films will appear, although Bond is probably their biggest property.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,155 ✭✭✭Spon Farmer

Is this discount on Music Unlimited new?

I’ve subscribed to Music before and never been able to pay it in a bubble with Amazon Prime and Prime Video.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,155 ✭✭✭Spon Farmer

a recent update to the Prime Video app brought in being able to skip forward and and backwards in 20 seconds segments

it is useful for finding a specific moment but a pain for by dragging forward if you need to go for a point more than 20 seconds

is there an option for a normal “fast forward” like it used to be ?

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,340 ✭✭✭S.M.B.

I don't use it myself but here in the UK it's £9.99 normally but £7.99 if you're a Prime member.

You also get access to the limited Amazon Music Prime without paying anything.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,155 ✭✭✭Spon Farmer

Yes you can get them all in a bundle in the U.K. but if I remember correctly the music service that U.K. customers get is different somehow to the one customers in other countries get.

Think it came in last year at some point, but not sure.

However in the US to start anyway an upcoming price increase effectively wipes out the the discount.
