Why do grown men actively prop up fellow grown men(rugby players, footballers)

Was watching Ireland vs Scotland the other day in rugby(passively) and was taking a scroll through some of the Irish rugby players Instagrams. Each one of them has pretty high follower counts and I can only imagine that a good few of the followers are probably fit girls. Are men so stupid that they would actually make heroes out of these guys thereby giving them access to the hottest girls? It boggles the mind. I've never been able to celebrity worship because you're just feeding into the inequality whereby some normie dude who happens to be able to throw a ball backwards, hit a ball into a net or hit a note gets a choice of women while some beer bellied schmuck in the pub signing Ireland's call while roaring for ORELAND to come on further cements this other grown mans status.

Humans are **** mental. The amount of things we do as a species that actively damage ourselves is mind-blowing. If these clowns stopped cheering from the sidelines like a bunch of clapping seals then these guys would just be regular guys playing a sport on the weekend but we actively feed into the idea that these pampered posh boys are modern day gladiators. LMAO. I'm picking on rugby for the purposes of this thread but could easily be GAA or soccer(which is a little different in Ireland) Only support yourself and nobody else. Unless Rob Henshaw is cheering you on week to week while you do project manage or close a few sales or whatever it is you do then put the Ireland jersey away and give "the match" a miss.

Just back from a 5k run followed by heavy deadlifts and pull ups. Plenty of time off the screen.

Sarcasm? It was pretty simply laid out. But I will repeat: Men create the social hierarchy which women pick up on and by glorifying these regular guys who happen to be able to throw a ball you actively put them above you on this ladder. I am curious as to why people do this when they basically get no return on this and actually just shoot themselves in the foot.

Rugby is an interesting sport because the fame is quite insular and it is only a small subset of the population who play the sport.

It’s a pass time, some people are rugby fans or amateur players themselves and appreciate the skill these top players have. I play golf as a pastime. I’ll never be great at it but I would cheer on Rory McIlroy or Shane Lowry. I was at Portrush when Shane won the British Open. The atmosphere was amazing. People were buzzing. What exactly is wrong with that. It was a great few days out.

It's par for the course with the OP.

He can't develop a relationship with the opposite sex. Yet it's always someone elses fault. Spends far too long on elucidating why it's everyone else's fault, whilst being sure to mention his effort at self improvement...

But completely misses the point of why he consistently fails. Self reflection may be more warranted than self improvement or laying blame but that always seems to be a bridge to far.

They'd just be guys who have good bodies, still attractive to some women but giving them status and fame just undermines everyone's(include me) chances. I'm very aware of hierarchy and the idea of someone above me on the pecking order makes me sick. No hate to any of the players btw, more power to them.

I am 32. Wiser and more insightful with every passing year. I always had a great feel for social dominance and hierarchy so I think that's why I found socialising quite jarring for much of my life. Some people don't get bothered by this but I do. I probably shouldn't use this site as a soapbox though but can be interesting to see if your thoughts strike a chord with anybody else. I genuinely find it hard to watch professional sports knowing what I know.

I used to be similar to you and realised I was just jealous, so moved on. The psychology of celebrity worship - be it rugby, football, sport, or any other sort of fame - is the same as any other kind of worship, people do anything to get closer to the idol, to the point of being in the same place as the idol and then becoming the idol.

As soon as you realise this, you then move on to working out that you don't actually want any of this, so you let it go. You transcend it. And you start focusing on you and who you are and what you want and not other people who want things they can't possibly have and, even if they did, wouldn't want it if they got it.

Anyone who has a sky sports subscription is supporting extremely well paid sportspeople. Consuming professional sport is a vice/pastime/distraction. I agree with the OP that it is absurd but I still do it. I have sky sports and the main sports that I consume are F1, darts and golf. Of these, the only one that doesn't have ridiculous amount of money sloshing around is darts.

I draw the line at buying "merchandise" like a shirt with some millionaire's name on it.

I think a lot of people grow out of "following" the likes of the premiership and shouting at the TV. Some don't though, I know a fat, bald fella aged 50+ who wears Everton gear as much as he can, has his car bedecked with stickers and flags etc.

In the mid 80s, English first division footballers earned approx 3 times the average wage. By the mid 00s this was 45 times. And yet, the likes of yer man above is still "Everton till he dies"

It's a difficult one. I watched Real Madrid vs PSG last week and I was blown away; I felt like a kid watching Benzema score those goals. But I have to keep such viewing to a minimum and in my view watching Real Madrid vs PSG is more removed than watching Ireland vs Scotland in rugby. I have hung out with girls that are either dating or have been with some of these rugby guys so it feels closer to home. But ultimately it is the same thing. I'd just prefer to focus on playing myself. I'll make exceptions depending on my mood.

The benefits accrued by the insiders of those successful in these sports is just too much nowadays and with Instagram their success is in our faces. There is a direct correlation between our investment in these things and the resulting success, both social and financial, enjoyed by those fortunate to be in this situation.

With music and film this is a thorny one. I don't have the ability to express myself in such a way but mostly these people seem to inhabit a different universe than me so I am able to forego my ego(sometimes) But when I read stories about celebrities it makes me sick as well. I just cannot deal with the power they hold.

That's an interesting distinction you make but a bit myopic. There's a direct cause and effect between supporting and fan worship and contributing to the superior social/lifestyle/financial gains of these people who happen to excel in said sport. Maybe most people don't care and that's fair enough but I do. As I said I am very aware of social status and the pecking order and don't like adversely contributing to my place on the ladder.

This thread could get philosophical, what is the purpose of life anyway when you think of it. Life can be tough for people, boring for some, people need distractions. They fill their time with all sorts of interests and pastimes.

I wouldn’t knock anyone for how they choose to entertain themselves so long as they aren’t harming anyone.
