Nice to see some love for bottas. Balances out some of the abuse he got over the last few years. He was never as bad as the posters made him out to be. He was just a massive disappointment as he was the only driver who could possibly challenge Hamilton's dominance but he wasn't fast or consistent enough to mount any kind of serious challenge. And that was frustrating.

Either way, nice to see him getting some appreciation in these threads.

Bottas has always been great on Saturdays over a lap. He's always been terrible in a race, especially when he needs to move through the field.

Maybe with the new cars now and him being at Alfa Romeo that will change. I really do hope he gets a few podiums this year and maybe even a win or two as well. Will be delighted for him if he does.

Was his heart really in the fight at Mercedes though? He knew even if he managed to get ahead James would be on the radio putting a leash on him so what was the point? Some of his radio conversations from last season were so depressing. He was always playing second fiddle and racing more for Lewis than himself in a lot of races. Now he's the top dog at Alfa with a rookie team mate and a car that, initially at least, looks decent so maybe we'll see a bit more fight from. It'll be disappointing if he drops straight out of the points.

By the last 2 years everyone gave up on Bottas. And even the likes of myself who was highly critical tried to be clear that it was mostly disappointment and towards the end when he started getting a bit uppity (and would win a race before going back to normal) it got to be sneery because, well, he's some guy I'll never meet so feck him. :P He's done fine against other team mates and he could well be a Gasly type this year near the top of the midfield.

The Alfa livery is great. Reminds me of the incredible Grand Prix cars they were building a hundred years ago.

So the new aero seems to be working in terms of letting the cars follow each other, but the heavier cars may not be able to race hard for very long without killing their tyres and brakes.

I feel like the new aero concept combined with 13 inch tyres and the old racier and lighter V10 engines could have been a dream combo. Still a whole lot better than what we’ve had for the last 8 years though.

The tyre deg must have come as a surprise here? Were perelli not predicting before the season started most races would be one stop? Then suddenly its a 3 stopper on the hardest compound? Granted the safety car made a lot of teams pit but didn't red bull and merc opt for a three stopper?

Heavier cars, not much running in race trim, abrasive track in Bahrain contributed to that.

Yeah nobody was predicting a three stopper before the race and people had been saying Pirelli were conservative. As the above poster mentioned, heavier cars and an abrasive track mean lots of tyre wear, but the cars will be heavy everywhere and the track surface was a known quantity, so you'd expect the rubber to have been sufficiently durable to deal with it.

3 stop races are no bad thing in my opinion, they allow for a wider range of strategy. As long as drivers can push in between their stops and everyone isn't tiptoeing around. I get the impression the teams don't fully understand the tyres yet and are still feeling their way around at the moment. There were such a huge amount of changes this year to get on top of with so little testing time.

The biggest disappointment for me this year has been McLaren, and this doesn't read well for them at all.

They have been on the up but this was all the way back to McLaren/Honda years in the hybrid era. Could be a long, long season for them.

Looks increasingly like their promising pace in Barcelona was an attempt to do some glory runs and lure in sponsors. Getting google on board as a sponsor is surely good news going forward though.

If all else fails to could revert to some of their tried and tested strategies from last time they won a championship 😆

If there is one team I feel sorry for it is Mclaren. They have had it hard enough for long enough. I would like to see them get there act together and do well this year.

Dunno how many of yous saw this before. I saw the first minute or so around the time it came out but gave it a full watch there and it's really, really bloody impressive. Considering how much we're not hearing/seeing, that they have replays cued "Roll A" "Roll C", the cuing of the helicopters isn't really there either and the sound and graphics departments aren't either. It's an incredible production and as annoying as some of their decisions about what to show can be annoying at times it really is impressive.

Anyone else moss the 13inch wheels and the fat tyres on the cars. I do. It was easier to see the wheels spinning and braking with the old wheels. With theses new 18inch wheels and the covers it's like they are on ice.

Is there more travel in the new suspensions? I know the old ones had about 1inch of travel because a lot of the bumps were absorbed by the fat tyres so how much travel have the new suspensions got?

The ground effect stuff means the old tyres probably wouldn't work. They're making changes within millimetres to sort porpoising, tyres with the kind of they had last year would massively compromise ground effect.

Quick q, is there any decent F1 pod that's not too serious?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,044 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

For F1 Sake (FF1S) is a good comedy podcast but has good news without trying to be about breaking news or having an inside scoop. They're just a funny take on the events ans pretty well informed.

I love The Races podcast, but it does get a bit geeky at times.

Wtf1 podcast isn't too serious. I'd imagine the hosts are very marmite though (either you'll enjoy or hate).

Thanks for the recommendations. I see there isn't one clear out and out. Driving from Dublin to Cork today, so going to give one a listen.

I wonder, if the Mercedes-Benz PU is a bit of a dog will Williams try to use Albons contract to secure HRC units from Red Bull for 2023

    This too shall pass.

Merc engine won't always be bad though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,419 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

Ya, but it homoglates this year, so if it's a dud it'll be still a dud for the next couple of seasons, right?

Also - I think Williams have a technical partnership with Mercedes, so that won't change...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,197 ✭✭✭✭klose

I think Williams are taking their gearbox off merc this year too which would mean they're sticking with their engines for a while yet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,134 ✭✭✭eviltimeban

Same could be said for the power train units if their reliability isn't good this year.

They had a fuel pump failure, which has nothing to do with the reliability of the power unit. I'm sure they'll find a way to mitigate for it in the next race. A couple of failures after 99% of a race distance and after near perfect reliability through multiple race distances during testing is unlikely to be as indicative of a big a problem as the bottom six all being on the same power unit.

Horner claims they've already sorted it, not sure if I believe that but it's clear Merc problems run much deeper than RBs. The question is how far ahead will Ferrari be by the time the other contenders have figured this stuff out.
