I don't know what this deposit bullsh*t is. You either have the money to buy the car or you don't.

I also haven't read the thread just the first page and the poster who even bought his first car and many since with a deposit is just weird.

I understand giving a deposit to a garage/dealer but giving a deposit and handing out log books is just madness. Luckily I never had someone ask if they could give a deposit on a car I was selling. I'm pretty sure I would decline and say first come first served. I have seen ads on Donedeal where people say relisted due to timewasters. I'm not sure if they were messed around with or not but from this thread it seems some people are going around asking someone to hold a car for them after giving €50. Just seems kind of odd.

I don’t think it’s odd to put a deposit of €500 on a €3.5k car. I mean, private sale is generally done in cash. Who carries that much cash, go check out car, leave deposit to show you are real and come back next day with the wedge. Hardly bullshit. I think you are being a bit harsh there

Then you find out that you can't get insurance or just change your mind. The seller has sent away other potential buyers and now has the hassle of getting the deposit back to you.

No one is saying bring all the money with you when viewing a car. But expecting a private seller to hold it is crazy. The 1st person with the amount the seller wants gets the car not the 1st to view.

Plenty chancers out there, both sellers and buyers.

Yeah, so they lose their deposit if they don't go ahead. Surely a win for the seller. I'd take €250 / €500 any day for someone wasting half an hour of my time 😂

There should be no deposit if someone sees the car and are interested they can come back in a day or 2 with the money if they don’t then move on to the next interested party

€500 deposit for a 3.5k car to hold it overnight? I’d say a lot of buyers would turn on their heels with that demand.

Did you miss the both buyers and sellers part?

Not sure what you mean? I've sold many a car, always want a non-refundable deposit to agree the sale. I will stick to my part of the deal, I immediately take the ad down. Plenty of buyers have gone AWOL or for some reason did not go ahead within the agreed timeframe. I keep the deposit. And put up a new ad. The way of the world.

Exactly. The deposit is a favour to the buyer. If they **** up, they lose it. If they don't want to pay it, they will get no special treatment. No deal.

Always take a deposit myself but ill leave the ad up and take any interested parties details if they call in case the sale falls through.

Haven't encountered issues with people looking for deposits back myself but have had friends get serious hassle from guys pulling out of a sale and wanting a deposit back. Can get messy if people have viewed the car at your house.

Any (veiled) threat and you call the Guards. That nips that right in the bud, they will get a home visit and they will be logged into PULSE too.

It's smart that you leave the ad up, in my case I always want a large enough deposit that it would be worth my while to have to re-do the ad in case I get a time waster.
