Hi all,

I'm going to need to buy a car in the next few weeks.. I'm changing jobs and have been driving a company car, so no trade in.

I've been driving diesels for years but my commute will be much shorter now, and will be just using the car for the commute really..

I'm tall, so need a bigger car, and will need to have room for a baby seat.

I'd be in the budget of at least a 10 year old car, but would like something that is cheap to run/maintain but not completely boring!

Would you have any advice on what might fit or what to avoid?

Your choices would be limited in the petrol saloon range, I'd be going for a 1.4/1.6 to avoid massive tax costs per year.

You'd get a 2008-2010 corolla or jetta with that type of money.

I'd definitely consider a honda jazz or honda civic at that price point

God I'd hate to live in the same street as that seller, 8 cars for sale at the moment. It must be hard to get a parking space around there!

The merc would probably cost a lot to keep going compared to a corolla etc.

Anyone have any idea how roomy a civic is? I'm 6'4 and don't want to be squashed.. I do find the Corolla incredibly boring but it does seem top sensibility-wise in the price bracket I'm in

You'll have a good bit of space - I'd definitely test drive one.

The civic would a far better experience than the corolla, around the same reliability as well.

The Fabia and Octavia are the only cars I have driven where I didn't need to have the seat fully back and I am 6'1". There is at least two more notches the seat can slide back.

Maybe you want something bigger than the Fabia but it was a great car for us and cheap to run and tax. Most economical for fuel

I wouldn't have even considered the Fabia as looks tiny, but is there good room in the front? Not the nicest looking thing, but I'd imagine it's economical.

Have a Superb Estate (bought from a boardsie in this forum) for the family car and haven't had an ounce of trouble with it (and it is absolutely huge), so would definitely consider.. Octavia doesn't seem achievable in the price range..

Anyone have any experience of a Seat Ibiza petrol? Probably around 2010 with a small engine in this budget

Also seems to be a few Mazda 6 with high(ish) mileage - how would these fare out?
