Audi A4 or A6

I'm thinking of buying an A4 or A6 2016 or 2017.
What should I look out for as regards pitfalls?

Thinking about an automatic saloon diesel. Something around 2016/2017...willing to spend about €20k - €23k.

The average of an A4 and an A6 is an A5 - so get that.

One thing to consider is the a4 of 2016/17 is a new model whereas the a6 is a model that came out in 2011 or 2021. It got a mid cycle face-lift in 16 but it's an older model. Realistically this only means the infotainment and some digital tech in the a4 might be a bit ahead of the a6 of those years. I still think the a6 wins for nicer interior overall. The 182 a6 new model blows them all away in my opinion though.

The a6 is a bigger more comfortable car but the a4 will be a sharper drive. Not to the same extent as the 3 series is sharper than 5 series but still a factor maybe for you.

Also watch out for the engines, I know the a6 commonly had a 150bhp engine around those years. I have one myself but it's 190bhp. A4 came in 120, 136, 150 and rarer in 190 so just check the power output.

Get S Line in whatever you choose, keep wheels 19 max. A work colleague bought an a5 last week with 21 inch wheels and its very harsh although it's lovely.
A5 is a viable option too...based on a4 but will cost like an a6 although it's a very good looking car.
A7 best of everything but you're looking at big money then.

I find this a strange question, people buy car based on requirements so do you require the size of an A6 or not?

If not then buy an A4.....an Audi is an Audi just in different shapes and sizes

Thanks. I like the S line especially in the A5 and A6. Will probably end up getting the A4 though!!

Hi. I ended up buying an 2.0lt A6 S line Automatic!

Quick question... recently I parked on a slight downward slope. When I tried to reverse, it felt like the car did not have the power to reverse and the only way out of it was to move slightly forward and then go back into reverse.

I have it set to drive in economy mode. Is this the problem??

Mine has plenty of power to reverse even when faced with an incline but you'll need to use the accelerator, not just let the car creep in gear. Any obstacle like a bump or an incline will need accelerator to clear, in forwards and reverse.

Also, I wouldn't leave it in economy mode all the time. It reduces acceleration hugely for a fairly minimal fuel consumption gain. I have it too and never use it any more, messed around with it at the start. I prefer the dynamic mode to the normal one too, makes car much livelier.

I have tested the same journey in economy, normal drive and dynamic and the consumption figures were so close it could be accounted for by engine temp, stopping at an extra set of lights, having to brake a little bit more......I have never tried to reverse on an incline using economy mode I will admit so it may be your problem.

It's a 190bhp car there should be plenty of power although I'm not sure if bhp and torque figures are relevant in reverse gear or not.

One of the YouTube channels had an A3.

He was doing a long journey from somwhere in the South of England to Edinburgh and back a few days later.

He decided to drive in 'Economy' mode one way and a mixture of the rest on the way back. I think it was an S3. The difference in fuel economy between the two? As you pointed out...negligible!

Just a much more boring drive in economy!

Depends on your warranty, I successfully returned a A6 allroad last year to a dealer.

I was quoted 1500-5000 from a trusted gearbox specialist to fix, could be clutches, could be mecatronic (or its harness)
