Just sieze every Russian vessel currently outside of russian waters ,they may rethink the idea, but then again the leadership has joined a end of the world cult

I'm not sure if that's what his statement meant. However, we treat enemy combatants on our own dime - so for Abramovic to fund care for victims on both sides is fine by me. An 18 year old Russian soldier with his leg blown off still needs to be treated, aggressor or not.

Not an expert on these matters by any means, but for me it seems that there are two fundamental flaws in Putin's thinking:

    1) Since when were Russia not part of the "west"? It seems that this is just some fictional category that exists in Putin's head. The Russian people have been part of the west for a long time and I don't think they see the difference.

    2) I don't think he is accounting for how much the sanctions are going to destroy his country. At the end of the day, the "developed" world is run by corporations, not governments. The corporations let the governments pretend to run things but at the end of the day its just a charade. So if you are a "developed world" country, and all the biggest global corporations (Apple, Nike, Mastercard etc) decide they are no longer going to provide products/services to your people, you are F&*Ked!

The real question is how many rational brains exist between Putin and the button! I use to think we were safe as he was only motivated by Money and Power but it seems he is starting to lose the plot a bit.

Advice from military experts that I've seen is to fortify defensive positions. Russia will pick off offensive moves by Ukrainians.

Just for the guns to fall silent and Russia pulling out of the Ukraine, couldn't Putin just round up a couple of his generals, blame them for the botched up war or "operation in the Ukraine" and fire them, or send them to a labour camp? He'd still be seen as the big strong man in his media, he owns......

Exactly. The Ukrainians need to bog the Russians down in a War of Attrition. Hit and Run guerilla warfare, akin to the Mujahideen in Afghanistan in the 1970's and 1980's.

If that's the case Avolon should get theirs back.

If he was smarter he would have left that open as an option by having underlings do all the talking and keeping some distance. He has said too much in public at this stage for that to be in any way plausible though.

Perhaps there's a McDonald's there with a ball pond and climbing frame?

    Might not be that simple.

While majority Chinese owned, Avolon is still a registered Irish/EU entity.

Afghans had great terrain to work with. Ukrainians not so much. They're giving up space to protect the cities. So this is going to be a conflict in among city ruins as the Russians approach. Problem is if the Russians just level the area, very hard for Ukrainians to survive that. All indications are that Russia will do what it did in Grozny and Syria, just level towns and cities.

Of course they'll say that, because it might mean Russia will have to spread their troops wider.

Currently it looks like Russia doesn't have enough troops to hold territory, but if they call in more troops (might see that from tomorrow if that martial law plan goes on) then that might change. If they take Kyiv (and Kharkiv/Mariupol) then the war could be over pretty soon.

Doesn't really look like Russia thought of an exit plan outside puppet governments, though.

Seems like it's getting pretty bad in terms of Russia's abandoned equipment.

A tank that was first revealed in 2017 has been found abandoned by Ukrainian forces.

All these sanctions don't seem to be doing nothing to Russia and Putin. He will win this war and with the corruption that exists in this world, life will continue as normal, painfully I say that. At this stage I would love if US/NATO went in and destroy the Russians to stop this war.

It feels like Bosnia 1992-1995, only far worse while we all watch the horrors of what's happening and nobody doing nothing outside. I remember in Bosnia at the Miss Sarjevo beauty competition and the winner held up a banner "Don't let them kill us all" felt horrible seeing that and being able to do nothing. This is a horrible world. This is going to to be horrible for Ukraine.

    @realdanbreen

Just to note, that appears to be the honorary consul's private home address. He's an Irish citizen and not an employee of the Russian government. Most honorary consuls are unpaid positions and I imagine this is the case here.

I'm tagging you as I don't want to quote, and am gently prodding you to delete. While it would be great if he resigned and disassociated himself from the Russian government, I personally don't think it's kosher or responsible posting a home address as it might generate harassment for him and his family.

The sheer maniacal audacity of Vladimir Putin to claim that Ukraine and Russia are "one people", whilst simultaneously justifying shelling them into oblivion.

The scenario playing out currently is a disaster for the people of Ukraine.

Putin and Russia’s slow advance has meant he has changed tactics to indiscriminate bombs, attacking civilian infrastructure and cities running out of food and water.

The Western Alliance is left with a terrible set of choices - increase sanctions and watch as thousands of Ukrainians are killed by Putin, and he takes control of the country or send in NATO air support and start to try and hold back the Russian advance. This clearly risks World War 3. Is it best to take a wait and see approach as thousands of people are killed? But I would be worried that Putin, China and others could become emboldened knowing the West will not challenge someone who has threatened to put their nuclear arsenal on high alert.

Avolon is still an Irish based company with a China (majority) and Japanese parent share.

The reality is though that saying Russian companies won't send them back is meaningless, the sanctions makes it impossible to send them back anyway as I had pointed out previously.

I don't think Russia will be allowed re-enter the civilised world as long as Putin is at the helm and frankly **** them.

I've transitioned to that point over the course of the week from a place of hold back and let's not cause nuclear war to it's probably best that NATO go at him sooner rather than later.

The war has gone too far now. I can't see nothing only WW3 coming. NATO and Europe will have to go in and grow a pair of balls and take out the Bully. Nuclear weapons is a load of BS by Putin. He has no basis to use them, they will wipe out Russia as much as the West.
