Is it worthwhile upgrading to 1080p cameras?

I have an old 4 camera 720p cctv system in place which was ok, but never great so whilst trying to keep to a reasonable budget I'm looking to update the system. I have BNC/power cables in place for 4 cameras & 2 new Yale 1080p cameras and cables ready to run. The Yale 1080p cameras are not really compatible with the old 720p DVR (only viewing in black and white). My plan was to to get a new 1080p DVR & 4 new 1080p cameras to end up with a 6 camera system. Is it worth upgrading to 1080p, or is this format now becoming outdated? I figured that I might as well use the existing cables that I have in place to save work on the installation - just switch out the old cameras and DVR. Any thoughts and / or recommendations please?
