Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I have often wondered how this nonentity has remained in his job on late night 2fm for 10 years. He has only 700 listeners. You would think they would have tried a phoneshow rival at some stage.

    He has only 700 listeners.
    Is that true?

Where does the 700 listeners figure come from? According to the latest JNLR figures, Dan Hegarty has 10,000 listeners per night in that timeslot.

Still not great numbers but a lot more than 700! Averaging out the quarter hours he is marginally behind Paul McLoone on Today FM.

Is it also true that this show is a replay of his show on the digital station RTE Pulse that is on at 10 in the morning? I have never listened to check.

The whole 'indie -radio -cool ' thing is not popular anymore. It was fashionable for the 'Pet Sounds' years but it's pretty much a dead duck these days. Phantom, an entire radio station playing this kind of music struggles to get a weekly audience that most local radio breakfast shows have every single day. The audience is just not there for it.

Dan has a tiny listenership because he is on late at night playing specialist music to a tiny audience of specialist music fans.

Having said that, Dan is really good a what he does and he plays some cracking good music, but it's not for everyone.

Always thought he is one of the superior DJs on radio. He plays music that people want to hear. End of story.

The figures don't support your argument. 10,000 figures nationally - the youth stations would have multiples of that just in their own franchise area.

That accolade belongs to Pat James on Nova the best DJ in Ireland by a long mile.

I think Leaky Gee (!) has made a very good point here. The music that Dan Hegarty plays similar to that played by Paul McLoone and Phantom all day is totally out of fashion at the moment.

The statto in me has gone back in the JNLR figures for Today FM by means of example when Tom Dunne's Pet Sounds was competing with Dave Fanning on 2FM. Between 7 and 10pm at the end of 2005, Today FM had a national reach of 42000 listeners while 2FM had 38000 in the shorter 8-10pm slot. A combined total of 80000 listeners nationally per night.

Fast forward to the most recent JNLR book which still has Paul McLoone on 7-10pm for comparitive purposes. 2FM now have about 21000 from 8-10 pm and Today FM have 29000. That comes to approx 50,000 total which is a drop of around 40%.

These figures should not be the only deciding factor in programming decisions. After all, the JNLR is a quantitive rather than a qualitive survey but they do provide an insight into the dropping audience for a musical genre. Question for Fanning, McLoone and Geraghty is whether a peak will follow this deep trough.

They should have a lady with a sexy voice doing a live show at this time of night.

Live show? Dan Hegarty's show isn't live on 2FM. It's live on digital station 2XM earlier in the day.

I think that was part of the point there.

The only good show I listen to on 2fm.hope he doesn't get the axe even if it is pre recorded it's a great show...it's gonna be hard to replace dan...him and Jenny Huston were the only good night shows on radio now she's gone...2fm gone to the dogs.

I heard a bit of his show last night after Chris and Ciara, I found it very mainstream tbh, The artic monkeys and Lou Reeds take a walk on the wild side.

Chris & Ciara now have 12k listeners in that slot, that's up 2k on what Hegarty had.

Probably within the sampling margin of error in reality

is he an RTE employee or a contractor I wonder ? He has played a good game to have lasted so long

His fans must be absolutely delighted that he's back at 10pm indefinitely.

He's still on 2XM in the afternoon the last while too.

They're all contractors as far as I know.

Since Hergarty is apparently RTE staff, perhaps they could transition him over to RTE Radio 1 to take over from John Creedon when he retires now that Jenny Greene is getting the 10/Midnight slot on 2fm ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,173 ✭✭✭Declan A Walsh

Is Dan Hegarty staff? I assumed he was a contractor like practically all the presenters on 2FM.

I love the way his name is spelt four different ways on this thread, including the thread title which got it wrong!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,608 ✭✭✭ford fiesta

Yes he is RTE Staff ...though I wonder will his show will remain on RTE 2XM?

Just like Will Leahy and Rick O'Shea moved from RTE 2FM to Digital radio RTE Gold

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,173 ✭✭✭Declan A Walsh

Whatever about 2FM, why would his alternative rock show not remain on RTE's digital alternative station 2XM? Would that not make more sense than moving it to RTE Gold?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,608 ✭✭✭ford fiesta

I didn't suggest move Dan's show to RTE Gold.

Was just using the example of permanent RTE staffers Will and Rick being moved from 2FM to RTE Digital radio (RTE Gold).

Dan is already on RTE Digital radio (2XM) with the same 2FM show, only repeated.

However an indie classics show with Dan, would not go amiss on RTE Gold !!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,173 ✭✭✭Declan A Walsh

You said you wondered if his show will reman on RTE 2XM and then you said "just like Will" etc. Did you mean to say you wondered if his show will remain on 2FM? That parallel with Will and Rick would make sense then....in my head anyway!

my point was that RTE Digital radio has a history of permanent RTE Staff - departing 2FM to ONLY being on the RTE digital stations - examples John Clarke, Aidan Leonard, Will Leahy, Rick O'Shea.....

....the digital station is irrelevant (2XM, RTE Gold....)

at the end of the day they moved from being on well known 2FM (as presenters and/or producers) to a much less well known digital station, with very less listeners and having to produce / present a less involved show (no advertising, pressure of listener figures, promotion etc) - while remaining in their permanent RTE job on the same salary (I assume !!!)

Any update on his future after Jenny Greene takes over the 10 till Midnight show next Monday? There is no mention of him in the schedule after next Sunday night. Are 2fm dispensing with his services?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,608 ✭✭✭ford fiesta

He will probably remain with RTE 2XM..he is RTE permanent staff.

It is a shame. This will be the first time there will be no rock/indie show on the 2FM schedule since the early days. Cormac Battle does have a show on Fri nights/Sat mornings but that has a mix of everything not just rock/indie.

  • Registered Users Posts: 381 ✭✭Ballycommon Mast

Then that would be a scandals waste of money since 2xm only ever has about 7 listeners online

  • Registered Users Posts: 381 ✭✭Ballycommon Mast

Well 2fm have now at the last minute revised the evening schedule and shoehorned DH into an hour long slot from 11 to Midnight. God only knows what was happening behind the scenes to result in this last minute decision

Odd. Would they not make it two hours 11-1? Didn't he do that before?

Because they want to keep the robojock playing the daytime playlist at midnight

  • Registered Users Posts: 381 ✭✭Ballycommon Mast

I wonder was Dan Healy hoping that some other department in RTE would take Dan Hegarty on but to no avail ? It's very unusual that they spent the last few weeks telling us that Jenny Greenes new show would be starting on the 21 of Feb from 10 till midnight but late on the Friday before they suddenly announce that Jenny will now be 9 to 11 followed by Dan Hegarty from 11 till midnight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,608 ✭✭✭ford fiesta

so what was the original plan - game on for 2 hours 6 - 8?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,240 ✭✭✭✭Hurrache

The hour reduction in his show makes no sense, and it's probably detrimental to Irish musicians that don't fit into the flash in a pan pop model as their airtime, across the Irish radio spectrum, takes another hit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,608 ✭✭✭ford fiesta

just very strange how they dont have Dan on 11 pm to 1 am ...he had that slot before!!

To be fair, they have been using the Midnight to 2 slot on & off to give new presenters a dry run, yerman Beta De slivia was one for a week or two before taking over weekend breakfast.

How often did this happen? Not very often??

If it did happen, could they not put new guys on from 1 am to 3 am?
